Three-Dimensional Shape and Surface Features Distinguish Multiple Sclerosis Lesions from Nonspecific White Matter Disease.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: There remains a need to further refine the ability of clinicians to differentiate multiple sclerosis (MS) from other disease etiologies. Here, we illustrate the value of 3-dimensional (3D) geometric shape and surface lesion characteristics between disease states. METHODS: Standardized 3-Tesla 3D brain magnetic resonance imaging studies were performed on enrolled MS and nonspecific white matter (NSWM) patients. Focal supratentorial lesions were identified, reconstructed using maximum intensity projection, manually segmented, and 3D printed. Printed 3D models were random

Study of the fingertip pattern as a tool for the identification of the dermatoglyphic trait in bronchial asthma.

INTRODUCTION: Bronchial Asthma is one of the most extensively studied respiratory diseases and its genetic basis is well established. Dermatoglyphic traits are formed under genetic control early in development but may be affected by environmental factors during first trimester of pregnancy. These patterns may represent the genetic makeup of an individual and therefore his/her predisposition to certain diseases. Patterns of dermatoglyphics have been studied in various congenital disorders like Down's syndrome, Klinefelter's syndrome and also in chronic diseases like Hypertension, Diabetes Melli

Early lateralization and orientation tuning for face, word, and object processing in the visual cortex.

Event-related potential (ERP) studies of the human brain have shown that object categories can be reliably distinguished as early as 130-170 ms on the surface of occipito-temporal cortex, peaking at the level of the N170 component. Consistent with this finding, neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies suggest major functional distinctions within the human object recognition system, particularly in hemispheric advantage, between the processing of words (left), faces (right), and objects (bilateral). Given these observations, our aim was to (1) characterize the differential response propertie

Parallel detection of autoantibodies with microarrays in rheumatoid diseases.

BACKGROUND: Clinical needs often dictate testing for several autoantibodies in a single patient with evidence of autoimmune disease. We developed a microarray containing 15 autoantigens for the detection of autoantibodies in rheumatoid autoimmune diseases. METHODS: We synthesized recombinant centromere protein B, cytokeratin 19, SSA 52-kDa antigen, SSA 60-kDa antigen, SSB antigen, and Jo-1 antigen and prepared anti-nuclear antibody antigens. Cyclic citrullinated peptide, histone, goat IgG for detection of rheumatoid factor, double-stranded DNA, and single-stranded DNA were purchased, as were

Missing infrastructure for real-world predictive AI impact.

Health systems are under increasing pressure as chronic disease becomes the dominant burden of care. Addressing this requires earlier detection and prevention, and predictive artificial intelligence (AI) tools are a demonstrable means of targeting interventions more effectively. Despite extensive research activity and substantial public funding, few predictive AI tools are translated effectively into routine care. We argue that the primary translational barrier is now organisational rather than solely methodological: without defined institutional ownership and long-term stewardship, including

A multidisciplinary approach to managing severe gummy smile using 3D simulation and digital surgical guide: a case report.

A smile that reveals >4 mm of gum tissue is called a gummy smile (GS), offering negative impacts on people's self-confidence and aesthetic appearance. The treatment for GS should be planned according to underlying causes such as altered passive eruption of teeth, dentoalveolar extrusion, vertical maxillary excess, and short or hyperactive lip muscles. In this case report, a patient with severe GS received orthodontic and gingivoplasty treatment, aided by digital tools such as 3D simulation, smile design, and 3D printed guides. The treatment yielded remarkable and satisfactory results, without

PCSK9 and the nervous system: a no-brainer?

In the past 20 years, PCSK9 has been shown to play a pivotal role in LDL cholesterol metabolism and cardiovascular health by inducing the lysosomal degradation of the LDL receptor. PCSK9 was discovered by the cloning of genes up-regulated after apoptosis induced by serum deprivation in primary cerebellar neurons, but despite its initial identification in the brain, the precise role of PCSK9 in the nervous system remains to be clearly established. The present article is a comprehensive review of studies published or in print before July 2023 that have investigated the expression pattern of PCSK

Ingestible pH Sensing Capsule with Thread-Based Electrochemical Sensors.

Existing techniques for diagnosing gastrointestinal disorders in stomach, small and large intestines, and colon depend on biopsy, endoscopy or colonoscopy methods which are invasive, expensive and time-consuming. In fact, such methods also lack the ability to access large parts of the small intestine. In this article, we demonstrate a smart ingestible biosensing capsule that is capable of monitoring pH activity in small and large intestines. pH is a known biomarker for several gastrointestinal disorders such as inflammatory bowel disease. Functionalized threads utilized as pH sensing mechanism

Ex Vivo Analysis of a Porcine Bicuspid Aortic Valve and Aneurysm Disease Model.

We identified an extremely rare congenital porcine type 0 lateral bicuspid aortic valve from a fresh porcine heart. Using a 3-dimensionally printed ex vivo left heart simulator, we analyzed valvular hemodynamics at baseline, in an aortic aneurysm disease model, and after valve-sparing root replacement. We showed that bicuspid aortic valve regurgitation due to aortic aneurysm can be successfully repaired without significant hemodynamic impairment using the valve-sparing root replacement technique in an individualized approach. Our results provide direct hemodynamic evidence supporting the use o

[Virtual guide on ocular self-examination to support the self-care practice for people with HIV/AIDS].

The objective was to describe the process of development of a virtual guide on ocular self-examination for people with HIV/aids. The methodological proposal followed the five steps recommended by Falkembach: analysis and planning, modeling, implementation, evaluation and distribution. The adequacy of the printed version to the virtual required the construction of a tutorial video, adding illustrative photos for viewing possible ocular changes and interactive tool demonstrating the examination result to the user. In the first material assessment, we diagnosed failures in the layout, thus comman

Brain activation profiles during the early stages of reading acquisition.

In the present study, we demonstrate for the first time the presence of an aberrant brain mechanism for reading in children who have just started acquiring reading skills. Children who, at the end of kindergarten, are found to be at risk for developing reading problems display markedly different activation profiles than children who have, at this stage, already mastered important prereading skills. This aberrant profile is characterized by the lack of engagement of the left-hemisphere superior temporal region, an area normally involved in converting print into sound, and an increase in activat

Grating test of contrast sensitivity in patients with retrobulbar neuritis.

A retrospective study of 57 patients with retrobulbar neuritis (RBN) was carried out with a new test of contrast sensitivity that utilizes printed sinusoidal gratings. For 21 patients suffering from multiple sclerosis, visual abnormality was detected in 18 "affected" eyes and 12 apparently unaffected eyes. For the 36 patients with RBN, abnormalities were detected in 29. In seven of these cases, the grating test showed bilateral impairment. The grating test seemed to be a more sensitive indicator of demyellinization than other psychophysical tests. In 24 of the patients with the least severe di

Microchannel-containing hydrogel scaffolds enabled functional recovery in the absence of cells and bioactive molecules following spinal cord injury.

There is a lack of functional neural tissue regeneration following spinal cord injuries (SCIs) due to the resulting hostile microenvironment, necessitating interventional strategies such as tissue engineering scaffold implantation to promote neuronal regrowth within the lesion cavity. However, even in the presence of cells and/or bioactive molecules, the resulting neuronal regrowth has not necessarily led to functional recovery. This study leverages digital light processing (DLP) 3D-printing to create microchannel-containing hydrogel scaffolds towards imparting precise topographical cues for s…

Hybrid additive manufacturing and data-guided design optimization for graded anterior cruciate ligament engineering.

Interface tissues, such as the enthesis connecting ligaments to bone, present multiphasic architectures with continuous gradients in structure, composition, and mechanics. Engineering such complex transitions remains a major challenge in biofabrication. This study aims to develop a hybrid manufacturing and machine learning (ML)-guided design strategy to create functionally graded scaffolds for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. A hybrid biofabrication platform was used to integrate extrusion-based three-dimensional printing and electrospinning within a single workflow. Polycaprol…
