In people over 65 years of age (mean age 72) late onset asthma (LOA) is often mistaken for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Fish products in Slovakia have been heavily infected with Anisakis spp. larvae, which causes human anisakiasis. We found larvae in all tested samples of frozen Atlantic herring. Anisakid allergen t-Ani s7 testing revealed 2 positive cases in humans, signaling need for health authorities to closely monitor zoonotic marine parasites, even in inland areas.

Anaphylaxis during anaesthesia is a rare event which is mainly related to neuromuscular blocking agents. Latex and antibiotics are less frequently incriminated. However, allergy may be triggered by other less frequent and hidden allergen. Among these, povidone is largely used in numerous therapeutics and cosmetics. We report here an exceptional case of grade 3 anaphylactic shock with iodinated povidone administered via a rectal route.

Plants and plant products cause various contact reactions to the skin and mucosae. The skin reaction is usually dermatitis, such as irritant contact dermatitis, allergic dermatitis and a dermatitis caused by an airborne allergen. Other symptom pictures include allergic and non-allergic contact urticaria, protein contact dermatitis and phytophotodermatitis. We report a case of allergic contact dermatitis due to alcamphor present in a flushing solution used by a 58-year-old woman. It is the first case described in our Division of Allergy and the second one reported in the literature. Alcamphor is a chemical substance present in many products that may have been underestimated as the causative agent of contact allergic dermatitis as the allergen is not available in the standard patch test batteries.
