OBJECTIVE: to study the relationship between the cesarean section rates and the characteristics of newborns, mothers and maternity units, studying primary and repeat cesarean sections, and cesarean sections before and during labour separately. Population. Representative sample of births in France.
METHOD: Univariate and multivariate analyses.
RESULTS: The primary cesarean section rate (among women without previous cesarean section) was 11.0% and the repeat cesarean section rate was 62.9%. The main factors associated with primary cesarean sections were breech presentation, small-for-gestation

INTRODUCTION: When women with a previous cesarean section and an unfavorable cervix have an indication for delivery, the choice is to induce labor or to perform a cesarean section. This study aims to assess the effectiveness and safety of a balloon catheter as a method of induction of labor in women with one previous cesarean section and an unfavorable cervix compared with an elective repeat cesarean section.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a prospective cohort study in 51 hospitals in the Netherlands on term women with one previous cesarean section, a live singleton fetus in cephalic posi

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate if newborn weight difference is associated with the mode of delivery in women with a previous cesarean section due to arrest of descent.
STUDY DESIGN: This retrospective cohort analysis included all women admitted to the delivery room of Carmel Medical Center with a singleton fetus at vertex presentation and a prior cesarean section for arrest of descent. A comparison was made between women who had a subsequent successful vaginal birth after cesarean delivery vs. a repeat cesarean section for arrest of descent. The primary outcome was newborn weight difference between t

A retrospective study by means of multivariant discriminant analysis was performed on 496 deliveries (250 vaginal and 246 cesarean sections) is identify risk factors which predispose to postoperative febrile morbidity, in particular, endometritis. The infection rates for endometritis by type of delivery were: vaginal, 3.6%; elective repeat cesarean section, 6.0%; nonurgent primary cesarean section, 22.2%; and emergency cesarean section, 38.4%. No patient-related risk factors were identified for elective repeat cesarean section, and bacterial isolates were most frequently Staphylococcus aureus.

OBJECTIVE: We analyzed the delivery statistics from our institution to describe a successful program of cesarean section delivery reduction and to help us understand what factors explained the reduction.
STUDY DESIGN: A retrospective analysis of various cesarean section rates and risk factors from a prospectively collected delivery database of all patients delivered between May 15, 1988, and June 30, 1994. During the study period we instituted a program of increasing awareness, confidential provider feedback, more aggressive laboring techniques, and other clinical guidelines. The delivery dat

Repeat cesarean section is a major factor contributing to the rising cesarean section rate. Although vaginal birth after a previous cesarean section (VBAC) is advocated in most cases, it has not yet been adopted as widespread policy. In a case-control study we compared 400 women in Quebec who underwent VBAC with 1600 women who had a repeat cesarean section from 1985 to 1987 in an attempt to identify factors that favour vaginal delivery. Using both simple and multiple logistic regression analyses we examined the effect of independent variables linked to the patients (two variables), the attendi

OBJECTIVE: The trend of increasing cesarean section rates had evoked worldwide attention. Many approaches were introduced to diminish cesarean section rates. Vaginal birth after cesarean section (VBAC) is a route of delivery with diverse agreements. In this study, we try to reveal the world trend in VBAC and our experience of a 10-year period in a medical center in northern Taiwan.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study of all women who underwent elective repeat cesarean delivery or trial of labor after cesarean (TOLAC) following primary cesarean delivery by a general obstetrici

OBJECTIVE: To determine the true incidence of complete uterine rupture and uterine dehiscence among women delivered by cesarean section after a previous cesarean section.
METHODS: Medical records of all women who delivered at University Hospital in Malmö, Sweden, during 2005-2009 (n = 21 420) were retrieved from the electronic patient record system (EPRS). After adjustment for inaccuracies, 716 women who had undergone repeat cesarean section were identified and their operation reports were reviewed. Descriptions of complete uterine rupture or uterine dehiscence in operation reports were compa

Management of 226 patients with previous low transverse cesarean section in a special obstetric clinic for high-risk pregnancies significantly and safely reduced the incidence of purely elective cesarean section to less than 10%. A substantial incidence (25%) of other high-risk factors dictating antepartum indicated cesarean section were found in this population. There was 38.5% incidence of vaginal delivery in 145 patients who underwent a trial of labor. Patients delivered vaginally followed a normal labor curve up to full dilatation. Oxytocin was required in three cases of prolonged second s

OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to compare the practice patterns and outcomes of physicians delivering in our institution to identify risk factors and management techniques that could explain the differences in individual cesarean section rates.
STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively reviewed detailed computerized delivery records (n = 16,230) collected from May 16, 1988, to July 30, 1995. We excluded physicians who had <100 deliveries at our institution during the study period. The physicians were divided into two groups depending on whether their individual cesarean section rates were greater than (co

In 1983 the question whether or not to perform vaginal delivery following previous cesarean section is again presented to the obstetrical community. Data are presented on 778 patients managed during the decade January 1, 1973 to December 31, 1982. Four hundred seventy-six had scheduled repeat cesarean section on an elective basis. One hundred sixty-five experienced normal vaginal delivery. One hundred thirty-seven failed the attempt and were delivered by cesarean section. The group that delivered vaginally and scheduled elective cesarean section did well. However, in the failed attempt the pro

OBJECTIVES: Cesarean section is a lifesaving procedure with short and long-term consequences. Growing rates of cesareansections worldwide arise problems for subsequent birth. The aim of this study was to compare safety of vaginal birthafter two cesarean sections with repeat third cesarean section to help healthcare providers and patients make well informeddecisions about mode of subsequent delivery.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in a tertiary reference hospital. Database of alldeliveries (2010-2017) after two previous cesarean sections was created from

Over an 18-month period, the cesarean section rate was 21.6%. THe primary cesarean section rate was 14.9%. The various indications for the primary cesarean section are detailed. Cephalopelvic disproportion and breech presentation accounted for 50% of the primary cesarean sections. The frequencies of various types of morbidity (ie, endometritis, wound infection, and urinary tract infection) are presented and analyzed with respect to several variables. Patients who underwent primary cesarean section were at significantly greater risk of developing postoperative endometritis than were patients un

OBJECTIVE: The connection between adhesions and post-operative symptoms is well established. Adhesions are found in nearly half of the women at the time of their repeat cesarean section. For the first time a prospective pilot study has been done in order to evaluate the clinical significance of post-cesarean adhesions.
STUDY DESIGN: Fifty women who underwent cesarean section in their first pregnancy were interviewed prior to their repeat operation regarding their symptoms after the first surgery. The clinical history was correlated with the findings during the second intervention.

Analysis of 8000 cesarean births in the Maternity and Children's Hospital, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia documents an increase in the cesarean section (CS) rate from 3.9% in 1979 to 9.9% in 1984. This increase is mainly attributed to indications such as repeat section (37.2%) and fetal distress (28.5%). Increase in the diagnosis of fetal distress was related to the introduction of electronic fetal monitoring and this diagnosis was not substantiated by Apgar score of the neonate. Because of the social preference for large families in Saudi Arabia, over-use of cesarean section should be avoided. For this
