Clinical and CT sialography findings in 22 dogs with surgically confirmed sialoceles.

Sialoceles are an uncommon canine salivary gland disease, and complete surgical resection is important for a positive outcome. Radiographic sialography has been described as a diagnostic test for presurgical planning; however, superimposition artifacts may limit the diagnosis and detection of all affected glands. Computed tomographic (CT) sialography is a promising technique for delineating the salivary gland apparatus. The aims of this retrospective, observational study were to describe clinical and CT sialographic findings in a group of dogs with confirmed sialoceles, to determine the sensit…

Can we reduce the number of routine films required for contrast sialography?

A reduction in the number of radiographs for many investigations has been advocated. This study aims to assess the need for control views in sialography and whether the post-contrast lateral oblique radiograph would be satisfactory, at least initially, as the sole standard post-contrast film.

Contrast media in sialography: a comparison of Lipiodol Ultra Fluid and Urografin 290.

A prospective, randomized study of 60 patients undergoing sialography was conducted to compare Lipiodol Ultra Fluid (UF) (Ethyl diiodostearate, May & Baker Ltd), with Urografin 290 (meglumine diatrizoate 52.1% w/v and sodium diatrizoate 7.9% w/v, Schering). The quality of the images, the clinical tolerance and the side-effects of contrast were compared. Both agents produced adequate opacification of ducts but poor intra-gland duct filling was seen in two patients examined with Lipiodol UF. There were significantly more side-effects (which were also more severe) in the Lipiodol group. It is con…

Parotid sialography and lip biopsy in the evaluation of oral component in Sjögren's syndrome.

In order to evaluate their sensitivity and specificity, parotid sialography (PS) and labial salivary gland biopsy were performed in 150 putative patients with Sjögren's syndrome (SS) (74 with SS alone and 76 with SS associated with other well-defined disorders). Although PS and LSGB strongly correlated to each other (Kendall's Tau 0.47, z = 7.78, p less than 0.0001), PS confirmed the diagnosis of SS in a significantly higher prevalence of patients with respect to LSGB (63% vs 37%, chi 2 = 18.25, p less than 0.001). When the sensitivity and specificity of PS and LSGB were calculated, PS showed …

Radiation-induced xerostomia: objective evaluation of salivary gland injury using MR sialography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Xerostomia (dry mouth) is one of the serious complications of head and neck irradiation and has a strong influence on a patient's activities of daily living. MR sialography with salivary secretion stimulation provides additional functional information (salivary secretion reserve) and may contribute to the evaluation of the severity of xerostomia and predict the risk of developing a radiation-induced xerostomia. This aim of the study was to analyze MR sialography as an objective tool to evaluate radiation-induced salivary injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: MR sialography wi…

3D T2-weighted fast spin-echo MRI sialography of the parotid gland.

The diagnostic value of 3D T2-weighted MRI sialography and 2D T2-weighted fast spin-echo (FSE) images for delineation of the normal duct system and characterisation of parotid gland duct pathology was compared in a prospective study. We studied eight healthy volunteers and 18 patients with pathology of the parotid gland (tumours in 3, sialolithiasis in 6, Sjögren's disease in 4, recurrent or chronic parotitis in 4, post-traumatic stricture of the main parotid duct in 1). A heavily T2-weighted 3D FSE sequence was compared with a conventional 2D T2-weighted FSE sequence. The normal main parotid …

MR sialography using half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) sequences.

We describe our preliminary experience with the half-Fourier acquisition single-shot turbo spin-echo (HASTE) sequences for MR imaging of the salivary gland ducts. In the majority of patients, the main parotid and/or submandibular gland ducts and large branches within the glands were detectable on MR images obtained in 2 seconds per section and within 3 minutes for the entire examination. MR sialography using HASTE sequences can be combined with conventional MR studies for the salivary glands.

Salivary excretory index--quantification of the ascorbic acid response in dynamic radionuclide sialography.

Dynamic radionuclide sialography (DRS) provides data about the aptitude of salivary glands to accumulate the tracer and to secrete the saliva. Visual interpretation of the t/a curves may be onerous when salivary glands uptake function is impaired. The purpose of the study has been to quantify the ascorbic acid (AA) response by means of salivary excretion index (SEI). DRS was performed in 10 healthy subjects and in 118 patients with various diseases of the parotid glands. Data acquisition (80 frames/15 s) started simultaneously with i.v. administration of 99mTcO4. Fifteen minutes later AA was g…

Lessons learned from unintended sublingual sialography: imaging anatomy, technical considerations, and diagnostic implications.

OBJECTIVE: Digital subtraction sialography of the sublingual glands has not been reported previously, to our knowledge. We present a case series in which unintended digital subtraction sialography of the sublingual glands occurred during attempts at submandibular digital subtraction sialography. In four of the six cases, a mistaken diagnosis of severe sublingual gland sialectasis was made. CONCLUSION: Because of the unique histologic characteristics of the sublingual glands, knowledge of the technical aspects of sublingual duct cannulation and the relevant imaging anatomy is necessary to avoi…
