Deep learning-based automatic detection and grading of disk herniation in lumbar magnetic resonance images.

Magnetic resonance imaging of the lumbar spine is a key technique for clarifying the cause of disease. The greatest challenges today are the repetitive and time-consuming process of interpreting these complex MR images and the problem of unequal diagnostic results from physicians with different levels of experience. To address these issues, in this study, an improved YOLOv8 model (GE-YOLOv8) that combines a gradient search module and efficient channel attention was developed. To address the difficulty of intervertebral disc feature extraction, the GS module was introduced into the backbone net

DeepValve: The first automatic detection pipeline for the mitral valve in Cardiac Magnetic Resonance imaging.

Mitral valve (MV) assessment is key to diagnosing valvular disease and to addressing its serious downstream complications. Cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) has become an essential diagnostic tool in MV disease, offering detailed views of the valve structure and function, and overcoming the limitations of other imaging modalities. Automated detection of the MV leaflets in CMR could enable rapid and precise assessments that enhance diagnostic accuracy. To address this gap, we introduce DeepValve, the first deep learning (DL) pipeline for MV detection using CMR. Within DeepValve, we tested three

Review of quantitative outcome analysis of cranial morphology in craniosynostosis.

Outcome measures in craniosynostosis surgery have progressed from those based on the need for surgical revision to linear anthropometric measurements, 2D CT vector analysis and 3D CT vector analysis. However, finding an objective means to assess postoperative cranial morphological improvement remains challenging. A critical review of previous studies used to measure craniosynostosis surgery outcomes is presented. We also introduce and briefly discuss the key features of the computational algorithm that is being utilized in our center for evaluating craniosynostosis surgical outcomes. This has

Can electronic zoom replace magnification in mammography? A comparative Monte Carlo study.

Magnification, which is considered to be a relatively high "dose cost" mammographic technique, is a complementary examination performed on women exhibiting breast complaints or abnormalities. Particular attention is given to the imaging procedure as the primary aim is to confirm the existence of suspected abnormalities, despite the additional dose. The introduction of post-processing capabilities and the widespread use of digital mammography promoted some controversy in the last decades on whether electronic zoom performed on the derived initial screening mammogram can effectively replace this

Temporal registration: a new approach to manage the incomplete recovery of the longitudinal magnetization in the Modified Look-Locker Inversion Recovery sequence (MOLLI) for T1 mapping of the heart.

PURPOSE: To correct with post-processing effects of incomplete recovery of the longitudinal magnetization before a new inversion pulse in the Modified Look-Locker Inversion recovery sequence (MOLLI) sequence. THEORY AND METHODS: We model such effects as a temporal shift ([Formula: see text]) of the signal of the Look-Locker block following next inversion pulses. After using the following equation [Formula: see text], a temporal registration of [Formula: see text] is applied to the signal of the affected block to adjust the sampling time of the recovery signal and correct the underlying effect

Task-driven image acquisition and reconstruction in cone-beam CT.

This work introduces a task-driven imaging framework that incorporates a mathematical definition of the imaging task, a model of the imaging system, and a patient-specific anatomical model to prospectively design image acquisition and reconstruction techniques to optimize task performance. The framework is applied to joint optimization of tube current modulation, view-dependent reconstruction kernel, and orbital tilt in cone-beam CT. The system model considers a cone-beam CT system incorporating a flat-panel detector and 3D filtered backprojection and accurately describes the spatially varying

Boundary-Repairing Dual-Path Network for Retinal Layer Segmentation in OCT Image with Pigment Epithelial Detachment.

Automatic retinal layer segmentation in optical coherence tomography (OCT) images is crucial for the diagnosis of ocular diseases. Currently, automatic retinal layer segmentation works well with normal OCT images. However, pigment epithelial detachment (PED) dramatically alters the retinal structure, causing blurred boundaries and partial disappearance of the Bruch's Membrane (BM), thus posing challenges to the segmentation. To tackle these problems, we propose a novel dual-path U-shaped network for simultaneous layer segmentation and boundary regression. This network first designs a feature i

A novel lightweight deep learning approach for simultaneous optic cup and optic disc segmentation in glaucoma detection.

Glaucoma is a chronic neurodegenerative disease that can result in irreversible vision loss if not treated in its early stages. The cup-to-disc ratio is a key criterion for glaucoma screening and diagnosis, and it is determined by dividing the area of the optic cup (OC) by that of the optic disc (OD) in fundus images. Consequently, the automatic and accurate segmentation of the OC and OD is a pivotal step in glaucoma detection. In recent years, numerous methods have resulted in great success on this task. However, most existing methods either have unsatisfactory segmentation accuracy or high t

Small intestinal bleeding prediction by spectral reconstruction through band selection.

SIGNIFICANCE: The identification of gastrointestinal bleeding holds significant importance in wireless capsule endoscopy examinations, primarily because bleeding is the most prevalent anomaly within the gastrointestinal tract. Moreover, gastrointestinal bleeding serves as a crucial indicator or manifestation of various other gastrointestinal disorders, including ulcers, polyps, tumors, and Crohn's disease. Gastrointestinal bleeding may be classified into two categories: active bleeding, which refers to the presence of continuing bleeding, and inactive bleeding, which can potentially manifest i

A novel spatial-temporal image fusion method for augmented reality-based endoscopic surgery.

Augmented reality (AR) has significant potential to enhance the identification of critical locations during endoscopic surgeries, where accurate endoscope calibration is essential for ensuring the quality of augmented images. In optical-based surgical navigation systems, asynchrony between the optical tracker and the endoscope can cause the augmented scene to diverge from reality during rapid movements, potentially misleading the surgeon-a challenge that remains unresolved. In this paper, we propose a novel spatial-temporal endoscope calibration method that simultaneously determines the spatia

Inference time correction based on confidence and uncertainty for improved deep-learning model performance and explainability in medical image classification.

The major challenge faced by artificial intelligence (AI) models for medical image analysis is the class imbalance of training data and limited explainability. This study introduces a Confidence and Entropy-based Uncertainty Thresholding Algorithm (CEbUTAl), which is a novel post-processing method, designed to enhance both model performance and explainability. CEbUTAl modifies model predictions during inference, based on uncertainty and confidence measures, to improve classification in scenarios with class imbalance. CEbUTAl's inference-time correction addresses explainability, while simultane

Consensus of algorithms for lesion segmentation in brain MRI studies of multiple sclerosis.

Segmentation of multiple sclerosis (MS) lesions on brain MRI scans is crucial for diagnosis, disease and treatment monitoring but is a time-consuming task. Despite several automated algorithms have been proposed, there is still no consensus on the most effective method. Here, we applied a consensus-based framework to improve lesion segmentation on T1-weighted and FLAIR scans. The framework is designed to combine publicly available state-of-the-art deep learning models, by running multiple segmentation tasks before merging the outputs of each algorithm. To assess the effectiveness of the approa

Quantification of thyroid nodules in multiple ultrasonography systems.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) has been proposed in recent studies to extract tissue acoustic properties from pulse-echo signal. This paper introduces QIT-net, a quantitative imaging technique designed to assess thyroid nodules by quantifying acoustic attenuation (ATT) and speed of sound for multiple ultrasonography systems. The proposed method employs a CNN-Transformer hybrid architecture to effectively capture local features for fine details and global features for macro context within RF data. B-mode images are employed as an auxiliary input to ensure reliable performance regardless of the c

PDAFormer 3+: A full-scale connected modified transformer with parallel dual attention for 3D medical image segmentation.

Medical image segmentation is essential for enhancing diagnostic and therapeutic accuracy, improving healthcare efficiency, and advancing medical research. In recent years, transformers have gained increasing attention in medical image segmentation owing to their ability to capture long-range dependencies, effectively compensating for the limitations of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in global context modeling. This paper proposes PDAFormer 3+, a full-scale connected 3D medical image segmentation framework that integrates a parallel dual-attention modified transformer. Specifically, we i
