Segmental lumbar lordosis: manual versus computer-assisted measurement using seven different techniques.

OBJECTIVES: Obliteration of end-plate landmarks by interbody fusion has made the traditional measurement of segmental lumbar lordosis nearly impossible. Because the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels are most likely to be subjected to fusion procedures or arthroplasty and contribute to more than half of normal lumbar lordosis, it is crucial to identify a reproducible and accurate means of measuring segmental lordosis at these levels. METHODS: Twelve spinal surgeons measured lordosis at L4-L5 and L5-S1 on 10 separate radiographs using three techniques for L4-L5 and four techniques for L5-S1. With use of i

Using deep learning for estimation of time-since-injury in pediatric accidental fractures.

BACKGROUND: Estimating time-since-injury of healing fractures is imprecise, encompassing excessively wide timeframes. Most injured children are evaluated at non-children's hospitals, yet pediatric radiologists can disagree with up to one in six skeletal imaging interpretations from referring community hospitals. There is a need to improve image interpretation by considering additional methods for fracture dating. OBJECTIVE: To train and validate deep learning models to correctly estimate the age of pediatric accidental long bone fractures. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This secondary data analysis

Chylopericardium: a case report demonstrating utility of lymphography combined with 3D computed tomography for corrective surgical treatment using VATS.

We present a case of a 58 year-old woman with primary chylopericardium associated with chylothorax. Chylopericardium is a condition in which chylous fluid containing a high concentration of triglycerides accumulates in the pericardial cavity, and it can form for many different reasons. 3D computed tomography with lymphography precisely depicted the specific location of the lymphatic leak in this patient, which was successfully repaired using targeted video assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

Aplasia cutis congenita of the scalp with large underlying skull defect: a case report.

Localised agenesis of the scalp is the most frequent pattern in aplasia cutis congenita (ACC), a congenital absence of the skin and occasionally of deeper layers. Several clinical groups are characterised by the location and pattern of skin defects, associated malformations and the mode of inheritance. Death occurs in 20% of cases, secondary to the associated anomalies, to infections or to haemorrhage from ulceration of the sagittal sinus when there is also a defect of the underlying skull. In this latter case, we close the defect by two rotational scalp flaps (Orticochea technique) at birth.

Automated detection of moderate and large pneumothorax on frontal chest X-rays using deep convolutional neural networks: A retrospective study.

BACKGROUND: Pneumothorax can precipitate a life-threatening emergency due to lung collapse and respiratory or circulatory distress. Pneumothorax is typically detected on chest X-ray; however, treatment is reliant on timely review of radiographs. Since current imaging volumes may result in long worklists of radiographs awaiting review, an automated method of prioritizing X-rays with pneumothorax may reduce time to treatment. Our objective was to create a large human-annotated dataset of chest X-rays containing pneumothorax and to train deep convolutional networks to screen for potentially emerg

Classification of Aortic Dissection and Rupture on Post-contrast CT Images Using a Convolutional Neural Network.

Aortic dissections and ruptures are life-threatening injuries that must be immediately treated. Our national radiology practice receives dozens of these cases each month, but no automated process is currently available to check for critical pathologies before the images are opened by a radiologist. In this project, we developed a convolutional neural network model trained on aortic dissection and rupture data to assess the likelihood of these pathologies being present in prospective patients. This aortic injury model was used for study prioritization over the course of 4 weeks and model result

Accuracy evaluation of an automatic landmarking method based on 3D segmented CT scans of full lower limbs with knee osteoarthritis.

In preoperative planning, a number of techniques for registration of anatomical landmarks on bones, or "bones landmarking", have been developed for automatic measurement of lower limbs. However, the evaluation of these techniques is often neglected, reducing confidence in results and limiting clinical applications. We propose a protocol to evaluate landmarking techniques applied to thirty 3D images of osteoarthritic lower limbs. The protocol includes the evaluation of the ground truth based on manual landmarking performed by two experienced clinicians. Intra- and inter-operator variability wer

Harnessing X-Ray Energy-Dependent Attenuation of Bismuth-Based Nanoprobes for Accurate Diagnosis of Liver Fibrosis.

Timely detection of liver fibrosis by X-ray computed tomography (CT) can prevent its progression to fatal liver diseases. However, it remains quite challenging because conventional CT can only identify the difference in density instead of X-ray attenuation characteristics. Spectral CT can generate monochromatic imaging to specify X-ray attenuation characteristics of the scanned matter. Herein, an X-ray energy-dependent attenuation strategy originated from bismuth (Bi)-based nanoprobes (BiF3 @PDA@HA) is proposed for the accurate diagnosis of liver fibrosis. Bi element in BiF3 @PDA@HA can exhibi

CT angiography versus 3D rotational angiography in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: CT angiography (CTA) is increasingly used as primary diagnostic tool to replace digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in patients with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). However, 3D rotational angiography (3DRA) has substituted DSA as a reference standard. In this prospective observational study, we compare CTA with 3DRA of all cerebral vessels in a large cohort of patients with SAH. METHODS: Of 179 consecutive patients with SAH admitted between March 2013 and July 2014, 139 underwent 64- to 256-detector row CTA followed by complete cerebral 3DRA within 24 h. In 86 patients (62 %),

Cortical shell unwrapping for vertebral body abnormality detection on computed tomography.

The vertebral body is the main axial load-bearing structure of the spinal vertebra. Assessment of acute injury and chronic deformity of the vertebral body is difficult to assess accurately and quantitatively by simple visual inspection. We propose a cortical shell unwrapping method to examine the vertebral body for injury such as fractures and degenerative osteophytes. The spine is first segmented and partitioned into vertebrae. Then the cortical shell of the vertebral body is extracted using deformable dual-surface models. The cortical shell is then unwrapped onto a 2D map and the complex 3D

Gray scale registration of mammograms using a model of image acquisition.

A parametric technique is proposed to match the pixel-value distributions of two mammograms of the same woman. It can be applied to mammograms of the left and the right breast, or, more effectively, to temporal mammograms, e.g., from two screening rounds. The main reason to match mammograms is to lessen irrelevant differences between images due to acquisition: by varying breast compression, different film types, et cetera. Firstly, a technique like this might reduce the radiologist's efforts to detect relevant differences like abnormal growth in breast tissue that signals breast cancer. Second

Super-Resolution Deep Learning Reconstruction Improves Image Quality of Dynamic Myocardial Computed Tomography Perfusion Imaging.

Background/Objectives: Super-resolution deep-learning reconstruction (SR-DLR) is an advanced image reconstruction technique, but its effect on dynamic myocardial computed tomography perfusion (CTP) imaging has not been evaluated. This study aimed to examine the impact of SR-DLR on image quality and perfusion parameters in dynamic myocardial CTP. Methods: Thirty-five patients who underwent dynamic myocardial CTP for coronary artery disease assessment were retrospectively analyzed. Two CTP datasets were reconstructed using hybrid iterative reconstruction (HIR) and SR-DLR. Image quality was compa

Congenital coronary anomalies in adults: comparison of anatomic course visualization by catheter angiography and electron beam CT.

The objective of this study was to compare the anatomic course of anomalous coronary arteries by axial and three-dimensional volume-rendered electron beam computed tomography (EBCT) angiography and X-ray catheter angiography (CAG). We performed a blinded study where patients who previously underwent CAG with (n = 14) and without (n = 14; age- and gender-matched controls) anomalous coronary anatomy were studied with EBCT coronary angiography. Forty to 50 EKG-triggered 3 mm overlapping axial slices were acquired with 2 mm table movement within one breath hold during the i.v. injection of 140 cc

Dosimetric accuracy of a staged radiosurgery treatment.

For large cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), the efficacy of radiosurgery is limited since the large doses necessary to produce obliteration may increase the risk of radiation necrosis to unacceptable levels. An alternative is to stage the radiosurgery procedure over multiple stages (usually two), effectively irradiating a smaller volume of the AVM nidus with a therapeutic dose during each session. The difference between coordinate systems defined by sequential stereotactic frame placements can be represented by a translation and a rotation. A unique transformation can be determined

Magnetic resonance imaging of the medial extremity of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination: a new four-minute approach.

OBJECTIVES: The use of 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the clavicle in forensic bone age determination was prospectively examined and compared with plain radiography. METHODS: Four MRI sequences and three radiographs of 121 healthy subjects between 11 and 30 were studied by two observers. RESULTS: The number of images assessable for bone age determination was lower for plain radiography (PA: 68.7%; oblique: 97.5%) compared with MRI (VIBE: 99.0%). Concerning the subjective level of difficulty to assess bone age, the observers found it easier to assess bone age on MRI than on radiograph

Local Binary Patterns Descriptor Based on Sparse Curvelet Coefficients for False-Positive Reduction in Mammograms.

Breast Cancer is the most prevalent cancer among women across the globe. Automatic detection of breast cancer using Computer Aided Diagnosis (CAD) system suffers from false positives (FPs). Thus, reduction of FP is one of the challenging tasks to improve the performance of the diagnosis systems. In the present work, new FP reduction technique has been proposed for breast cancer diagnosis. It is based on appropriate integration of preprocessing, Self-organizing map (SOM) clustering, region of interest (ROI) extraction, and FP reduction. In preprocessing, contrast enhancement of mammograms has b

Multi-scale textural feature extraction and particle swarm optimization based model selection for false positive reduction in mammography.

The high number of false positives and the resulting number of avoidable breast biopsies are the major problems faced by current mammography Computer Aided Detection (CAD) systems. False positive reduction is not only a requirement for mass but also for calcification CAD systems which are currently deployed for clinical use. This paper tackles two problems related to reducing the number of false positives in the detection of all lesions and masses, respectively. Firstly, textural patterns of breast tissue have been analyzed using several multi-scale textural descriptors based on wavelet and gr
