Influences of Flap Shape and Hinge Angle on Opaque Bubble Layer Formation in Femtosecond Laser-Assisted LASIK Surgery.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effects of different flap shapes and hinge angles on opaque bubble layer (OBL) formation using a femtosecond laser for flap creation in LASIK surgery. METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 138 eyes of 73 patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted LASIK with a 150-kHz IntraLase femtosecond laser (Abbott Medical Optics, Inc., Santa Ana, CA) for myopic astigmatism and compared differences between different flap shapes and hinge angles on OBL formation. The surgical procedures were videotaped, and the patterns and sizes of the OBLs seen during surgery were an

Intrastromal Corneal Ring Implants Associated Bacterial Infections.

PURPOSE: This study examines the incidence of infection and resistance associated with Intracorneal Ring Segment (ICRS) implantation, a common outpatient surgical treatment for correcting refractive errors and corneal ectatic diseases. Although ICRS procedures are typically safe and reversible, there is a low but notable risk of microbial infections, which require prompt and sometimes invasive treatment. METHODS: Three electronic databases, PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), and Scopus, were utilised to search for literature according to PRISMA guidelines to identify infections related to the impl

The Percent Volume Altered in Correction of Myopia and Myopic Astigmatism With PRK, LASIK, and SMILE.

PURPOSE: To determine the volumes altered during photorefractive keratectomy (PRK), laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK), and small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) correction of myopia and myopic astigmatism. METHODS: The volumes of stromal tissue affected by surgical correction of pure and astigmatic myopia were calculated in this theoretical study for PRK, LASIK, and SMILE treatments. These results were then used to calculate representative values for percent volume altered (PVA) restricted to stromal corneal tissue. RESULTS: For the same spherical equivalent, there were remarkable d

Asymmetric Presentation of Corneal Ectasia With Acute Hydrops 34 Years Following Bilateral Radial Keratotomy.

Despite the subsequent emergence of more advanced refractive surgical techniques, ophthalmologists continue to encounter patients who have experienced long-term complications from radial keratotomy (RK). A notable complication of RK is corneal ectasia, which, although rare, can lead to significant vision impairment years after the procedure. The present case report details a 54-year-old male patient who developed unilateral corneal ectasia with acute hydrops 34 years following bilateral RK. The patient exhibited symptoms including decreased vision, corneal opacity, thinning, and steepening in

Management of a post-ELLKAT keratectasia with a gas permeable contact lens.

BACKGROUND: The Excimer laser keratoplasty of augmented thickness for keratoconus (ELLKAT) has been proposed for the refractive management of keratoconus. CASE REPORT: A 41-year-old man with a history of bilateral keratoconus came to the clinic for a contact lens. He had undergone an ELLKAT procedure in his right eye some months earlier in an attempt to obtain acceptable unaided vision. As the result in this eye was not positive, the surgery in the fellow eye was cancelled. On examination, I diagnosed a centrally located keratectasia (KE) in his RE. After surgery, the corneal shape presented

Developments in the correction of presbyopia II: surgical approaches.

PURPOSE: To discuss the various static and dynamic surgical approaches which attempt to give presbyopes good vision at far, intermediate and near viewing distances. CONTENT: Static methods broadly adopt the same optical techniques as those used in presbyopic contact lens correction and aim to satisfy the needs of the presbyope by increasing binocular depth-of-focus, often using monovision as well as simultaneous-imagery. Dynamic methods generally attempt to make use of at least some of the still-active elements of the accommodation system. They include procedures which are supposed to modify

Iatrogenic Corneal Puncture at the Beginning of Cataract Surgery Which Was Managed Uneventfully.

INTRODUCTION: Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed surgical procedures worldwide. Intraoperative and postoperative complications of cataract surgery include posterior capsule rupture, retinal detachment, suprachoroidal hemorrhage, cystoid macular edema, endophthalmitis, and intraocular lens dislocation. As corneal perforation is rarely related to cataract surgery, we report a case of intraoperative iatrogenic corneal puncture that led to a full-thickness laceration that was managed without severe complications. CASE PRESENTATION: An 81-year-old woman underwent immediate sequ
