An impedimetric immunosensor for diagnosis of Brazilian spotted fever in blood plasma.

Brazilian spotted fever (BSF) is a serious disease of medical importance due to its rapid evolution and high lethality. The effectiveness of the treatment mainly depends on the rapid diagnosis, which is currently performed by indirect immunofluorescence and PCR tests, which require high costs and laboratory structure. In order to propose an alternative methodology, we sought to develop an impedimetric immunosensor (IM) based on the immobilization of specific IgY antibodies for IgG anti Rickettsia rickettsii, using blood plasma from capybara (Hydrochoerus hydrochaeris), for characterization, va

A comprehensive review on the decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209)-induced male reproductive toxicity: Evidences from rodent studies.

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), a class of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), are employed in various manufactured products to prevent fires, slow down their spread and reduce the resulting damages. Decabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-209), an example of PBDEs, accounts for approximately 82 % of the total production of PBDEs. BDE-209 is a thyroid hormone (TH)-disrupting chemical owing to its structural similarity with TH. Currently, increase in the level of BDE-209 in biological samples has become a major issue because of its widespread use. BDE-209 causes male reproductive toxicity mainly v

Assessment of the mode of action underlying development of liver lesions in mice following oral exposure to HFPO-DA and relevance to humans.

HFPO-DA (ammonium, 2,3,3,3-tetrafluoro-2-(heptafluoropropoxy)propanoate) is a short-chain polyfluorinated alkyl substance (PFAS) used in the manufacture of some types of fluorinated polymers. Like many PFAS, toxicity studies with HFPO-DA indicate the liver is the primary target of toxicity in rodents following oral exposure. Due to the structural diversity of PFAS, the mode of action (MOA) can differ between PFAS for the same target tissue. There is significant evidence for involvement of peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) activation based on molecular and histopathologic

The Genetic Diversity and Interspecific Transmission of Circovirus in Rhizomys sinensis in Guangdong, Southern China.

Circoviruses are a group of small circular, single-stranded DNA viruses that belong to the family Circoviridae. They are known to infect a wide variety of animals. Rhizomys sinensis is a species of rodent that is the reservoir of many zoonotic pathogens. Our previous study identified many sequencing reads mapped to the genome of viruses in Circoviridae in R. sinensis. However, little is known about the circulation and genetic characterization of circoviruses in R. sinensis. This study identified three different circoviruses in samples from 195 R. sinensis. First, the bamboo rat circovirus is w

Is leishmaniasis the new emerging zoonosis in the world?

Leishmania is a genus of parasitic protozoa that causes a disease called leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is transmitted to humans through the bites of infected female sandflies. There are several different species of Leishmania that can cause various forms of the disease, and the symptoms can range from mild to severe, depending on species of Leishmania involved and the immune response of the host. Leishmania parasites have a variety of reservoirs, including humans, domestic animals, horses, rodents, wild animals, birds, and reptiles. Leishmaniasis is endemic of 90 countries, mainly in South Amer

Specific and rapid guanidinium CEST imaging using double saturation power and QUASS analysis in a rodent model of global ischemia.

PURPOSE: Guanidinium CEST is sensitive to metabolic changes and pH variation in ischemia, and it can offer advantages over conventional pH-sensitive amide proton transfer (APT) imaging by providing hyperintense contrast in stroke lesions. However, quantifying guanidinium CEST is challenging due to multiple overlapping components and a close frequency offset from water. This study aims to evaluate the applicability of a new rapid and model-free CEST quantification method using double saturation power, termed DSP-CEST, for isolating the guanidinium CEST effect from confounding factors in ischemi

A novel naïve Bayes approach to identifying grooming behaviors in the force-plate actometric platform.

BACKGROUND: Self-grooming behavior in rodents serves as a valuable behavioral index for investigating stereotyped and perseverative responses. Most current grooming analyses rely on video observation, which lacks standardization, efficiency, and quantitative information about force. To address these limitations, we developed an automated paradigm to analyze grooming using a force-plate actometer. NEW METHOD: Grooming behavior is quantified by calculating ratios of relevant movement power spectral bands. These ratios are input into a naïve Bayes classifier, trained with manual video observatio

The effect of alpha-lipoic acid on sperm functions in rodent models for male infertility: A systematic review.

In this systematic review, we assessed different studies to evaluate the protective effect of alpha-lipoic acid (ALA), as a multifaceted antioxidant, on sperm functions in rodent models. Four databases were searched to find papers reporting the effect of ALA treatment on animal models of male infertility. Up to December 2022, 11,787 articles were identified to explain the ALA protective effects. The included studies were evaluated for eligibility and risk of bias (CRD42022341370). Finally, we identified 23 studies that explain the effect of ALA on sperm functions in rodents. Among them, 15 stu

Adinazolam, a Benzodiazepine-Type New Psychoactive Substance, Has Abuse Potential and Induces Withdrawal Symptoms in Rodents.

Adinazolam (ADZ) is a benzodiazepine-type new psychoactive substance (NPS) with anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and antidepressant effects. High ADZ doses have been reported to impair psychomotor performance and memory; however, the abuse potential and drug dependence of ADZ have not yet been fully investigated. In this study, we evaluated whether ADZ has abuse potential and leads to drug dependence and withdrawal symptoms. The intravenous self-administration (IVSA) test revealed that ADZ (0.01, 0.03, and 0.1 mg/kg/infusion) was self-administered significantly above vehicle levels, suggesting the

Microbead-Induced Ocular Hypertension in a Rodent Model of Glaucoma.

Glaucoma is an irreversible blinding disease characterized by the loss of retinal ganglion cells. Development of therapeutics relies on suitable models and, given its complex nature, these are typically in vivo models. A widely used model, owing to its relative simplicity, is the microbead model. This model involves the injections of beads into the anterior chamber, which are suitably sized to block the aqueous outflow pathway, leading to an elevation in intraocular pressure and ultimately, retinal ganglion cell death. In this chapter, we describe in detail the materials and methods for modell

Hymenolepiasis Caused by Hymenolepis nana in Humans and Natural Infection in Rodents in a Marginal Urban Sector of Guayaquil, Ecuador.

BACKGROUND Hymenolepiasis is a globally prevalent zoonosis of the monoxenic cycle. Humans acquire the disease through fecal-oral transmission by ingesting food or water with infective eggs from infected rodents. This report presents 3 cases of hymenolepiasis in children, due to zoonotic transmission from rodents and presumably associated with the consumption of powdered milk contaminated with infective eggs of Hymenolepis nana, and shows that awareness and early diagnosis contributed to timely treatment of the disease. CASE REPORT Three children, aged 9, 12, and 13 years, living in a marginal

New Genotype of Coxiella burnetii Causing Epizootic Q Fever Outbreak in Rodents, Northern Senegal.

In Senegal, Coxiella burnetii, which causes Q fever, has often been identified in ticks and humans near livestock, which are considered to be reservoirs and main sources of infection. We describe the emergence of C. burnetii in rodents, not previously known to carry this pathogen, and describe 2 new genotypes.

Between Deserts and Jungles: The Emergence and Circulation of Sylvatic Plague (1920-1950).

I trace the development of the concept of sylvatic plague - the first sylvatic disease - examining its invention by Ricardo Jorge to describe a global phenomenon of plague reservoirs among wild rodents, and its circulation. The concept implied a space where plague was enzootic, and relied on a division between inhabited and uninhabited spaces and between domestic rats and wild rodents. Some of the characteristics of this space varied, but it always referred to places imagined as empty of humans and rats. In 1927, it designated ambiguously deserts, in 1935, uninhabited regions in general, and i

Animal Models of Exercise From Rodents to Pythons.

Acute and chronic animal models of exercise are commonly used in research. Acute exercise testing is used, often in combination with genetic, pharmacological, or other manipulations, to study the impact of these manipulations on the cardiovascular response to exercise and to detect impairments or improvements in cardiovascular function that may not be evident at rest. Chronic exercise conditioning models are used to study the cardiac phenotypic response to regular exercise training and as a platform for discovery of novel pathways mediating cardiovascular benefits conferred by exercise conditi

Exosome therapies improve outcome in rodents with ischemic stroke; meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Exosome therapy has been theorized to be safer, more effective, and less cumbersome in replacing stem cell therapies for tissue repair and regeneration. There remains considerable uncertainty on whether exosome therapy is efficacious and safe for recovery from brain injury due to cerebral infarction. There is growing consensus that systematic reviews of data, from preclinical studies which yielded conflicting and confusing results, can provide valuable directions for novel therapeutic options for several clinical conditions. This study systematically evaluated the efficacy of exosom

Fine-scale prevalence and genetic diversity of urban small mammal-borne pathogenic Leptospira in Africa: A spatiotemporal survey within Cotonou, Benin.

Leptospirosis is a zoonotic disease that is caused by spirochete bacteria of the genus Leptospira. Around the world, one million people each year are infected, leading to 60,000 deaths. Infection occurs through contact with environmental pathogens excreted by mammals (notably rodents). Data on Leptospira and leptospirosis in Africa are rather scarce, especially in urban habitats though these appear to be favourable environments for the pathogen circulation and human contamination. Using qPCR, DNA sequencing as well as MST/VNTR approaches, we examined Leptospira occurrence and genetic diversity

Ecological interactions, local people awareness and practices on rodent-borne diseases in Africa: A review.

Several anthropogenic activities exposure humans to the risk of rodent-borne diseases. These activities are but not limited to logging, clearing land for crop cultivation, and consuming rodents. Rodents are a highly diverse mammalian group and harbor many zoonotic diseases. This review focuses on dominant rodent-flea species, rodent-borne zoonotic diseases and awareness and management practices against rodent-borne diseases in Africa. Relevant academic literature spanning from 1974 to 2021 was analysed. Dominant rodent species reported in Africa included:- Mastomys natalensis and Rattus rattus

Cryptosporidium spp. and Giardia spp. in wild rodents: using occupancy models to estimate drivers of occurrence and prevalence in native forest and exotic Pinus radiata plantations from Central Chile.

The conversion of native forest to forestry plantations is a worldwide practice, affecting biodiversity and host-parasite interactions. One of the most common timber plantations in the world are monocultures of Monterey pine (Pinus radiata). Using occupancy models, we analyzed the occurrence and prevalence of Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts and Giardia spp. cysts in fecal samples of wild rodents from a landscape dominated by extensive Monterey pine plantations in central Chile. We aimed to assess drivers of parasite infection such as habitat type, abundance of rodent hosts, species richness, and
