The gold standard treatment for enchondroma in the hand is curettage and filling of the defect. The goal of this study was to evaluate the results when injectable calcium phosphate cement is used to fill the bone defect. Eight patients having a mean age of 44 years were operated through a minimally invasive skin incision. After a small bone window was made, curettage of the lesion was performed and verified by intraosseous endoscopy. The defect was filled with injectable calcium phosphate cement (JectOS/AREX®BONE, Kasios, L'Union France). The mean pain score (out of 10) decreased from 4.1 preo

Chondrosarcoma is a malignant tumor originating from cartilage-producing cells. Although rare in the hand, it is the most common primary malignant bone tumor in this location. We present a case of high-grade chondrosarcoma of the first metacarpal bone in an 85-year-old female, who presented with pain and severe limitation of hand function. Imaging studies initially suggested a giant cell bone tumor, and a tru-cut biopsy did not confirm chondrosarcoma. During the preoperative period, the tumor enlarged from approximately 10x9 cm to 15x11 cm, ultimately necessitating amputation as the treatment

NPR3-related tall stature is characterized by tall stature, elongated big toes, and additional epiphyses in hand and foot bones. The condition is caused by biallelic loss-of-function variants affecting natriuretic peptide receptor 3 (NPR3). Five individuals from four different families have been reported. Here we describe three siblings with NPR3-related tall stature who were tall (height z-scores between +2.9 and + 4.9) and had markedly elongated proximal and middle phalanges. Two siblings had additional epiphyses in phalangeal and metacarpal bones. All three siblings developed scoliosis, req

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine whether sex and age influence posterior semicircular canal (PSC) thickness.
METHODS: This observational study was conducted in 3 tertiary hospitals. The minimal distance between the PSC and the posterior cranial fossa (PSC thickness) was estimated by thin-section multidetector row computed axial tomography (CAT) scan of the temporal bones. Nonselected consecutive patients of all ages (607 temporal bones) were considered.
RESULTS: A significant effect was only detected for sex (F = 5.418, p = 0.020); PSC thickness showed a higher mean value in

OBJECTIVES: We recently introduced a new methodology called quantitative X-ray imaging (qXRI) to investigate bone mineral density in isolated rodent bones. The aims of the present study were to compare DXA and microCT with qXRI in a rat model of disuse osteoporosis.
METHODS: Fourteen Copenhagen rats were injected with a single dose of botulinum toxin (BTX - 2 UI) in the right Mus quadriceps femoris. The left hindlimb serves as control. Areal BMD and vBMD were determined with a Hologic Discovery-W device and a Skyscan 1172 microcomputed tomograph (microCT). Absorbing material density (AMD) was

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of early magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the wrist in predicting functional outcome in rheumatoid arthritis.
METHODS: MRI scans of the dominant wrist were scored for synovitis, tendon inflammation, bone oedema, and erosion at first presentation (n = 42), at 1 year (n = 42), and at 6 years (n = 31). At 8 years, clinical reassessment (n = 28) was undertaken. Tendon function was graded 0-3 for movement, tendon sheath swelling, and pain on resistance at nine flexor and extensor tendons of the hand. Hand function was also assessed using the Sollerman grip tes

Tumors of the hand comprise a vast array of lesions involving skin, soft tissue and bone. The majority of tumors in the hand are benign. Malignant tumors, although rare, do occur and frequently have unique characteristics in this specific anatomic location. Careful staging, histological diagnosis and treatment are essential to optimize clinical outcome. However, straightforward most of the time, hand tumor management does have pitfalls; caution is advised, as a missed or delayed diagnosis or an improperly executed biopsy may have devastating consequences. This article reviews the clinical spec

A total amputation through the proximal carpus is presented in a 10 year old boy. Replantation was performed following partial resection of the proximal carpal row with capsulorrhaphy, avoiding time-consuming osteosynthesis. The late result shows normal development of the hand and the preservation of wrist motion. For this reason conservation of the wrist joint especially in the growing skeleton should be preferred to a primary arthrodesis.

Three-dimensional hand movements combined with high stability of the wrist require precisely coordinated systems. The biomechanics of the carpal bones is based on the dynamic interaction between bone and joint architecture, ligament support, stabilization via extrinsic muscles, fine motor control via intrinsic muscles, and neuromuscular control loops. The proximal carpal row is an intercalated segment through which forces are transmitted from the forearm to the mid-carpus and fingers distally. Depending on the movement, the proximal carpal row must constantly change shape and position while ma

We present a case of simultaneous ipsilateral fractures at the intra-articular second metacarpal head, intra-articular fourth metacarpal base, and ulnar styloid. These fractures were caused by the peculiar condition of a blow to the fist during an ice hockey game; the hand was struck while it was gripping a stick. The specific combination of these fractures has not been previously reported in the literature. In this incident, axial compression force was transmitted from the second and fourth metacarpal heads while skipping the third metacarpal head to the ulnar side of the wrist via the carpom

Leprosy is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae and Mycobacterium lepromatosis. In the last stage it can afflict the skeleton with a series of specific and non-specific bone changes. The possibility of studyingthe skeleton of an individual who lived in the pre-antibiotic era (Roman period) with skeletal changes in the rhino-maxillary region and hand and foot bones, permitted skeletal lesions to be analyzed directly. In addition, the localization and the complexity of the bony lesions could be attributed to the presence of leprosy. The importance of this approach was the possibi
