Bifunctional MXene/carbon nanotube membranes with expanded interlayer nanochannels for efficient desulfurization wastewater treatment.

Desulfurization wastewater from coal-fired power plants contains high salinity and toxic heavy metals, posing significant environmental challenges. In this work, we developed an innovative solar membrane evaporation-crystallization system driven by solar energy and desulfurization waste heat, which converted desulfurization wastewater into clean water and fertilizer, enabling comprehensive management of wet flue gas desulfurization wastewater. The core component of this system, a bifunctional MXene/carbon nanotube (CNT) composite membrane, was prepared by vacuum-assisted self-assembly of Ti3C2

Tunneling nanotube-mediated intercellular filamin A transport mechanosensitively programs osteoclastogenesis in myeloma bone disease.

Intercellular communication between multiple myeloma (MM) cells and osteoclast precursor cells (pre-OCs) contributes extensively to the occurrence and development of myeloma-related bone destruction. However, key interacting modes and the exchanged substances involved in this communication remain unclear. In this study, we discover that tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) directly connect MM and pre-OCs. Using the stable isotope labeling with amino acids in cell culture assay and a positive-negative double selection strategy, we identify filamin A (FLNA) as a major protein transported from MM to pre-OC…

Electrical control of exchange bias in sub-10 nm regime enabled by single-nanotube patterning.

Achieving stable magnetization in sub-10 nm ferromagnetic layers represents a fundamental bottleneck in spin-orbit torque magnetic random-access memory development. While exchange bias potentially offers stabilization at such scales through antiferromagnetic coupling, conventional lithography fundamentally limits nanoscale verification. Here, we introduce a lithography-free nanopatterning strategy exploiting individual carbon nanotubes as etching templates, enabling precise fabrication of exchange-biased heterostructures from tens of nanometers down to single-digit dimensions. In perpendicular…

Copper-coated carbon nanotube surfaces for inhibiting biofilm formation by Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Biofilm-associated infections caused by clinically important pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) remain a major challenge in healthcare settings due to enhanced antimicrobial resistance and persistence. In recent years, copper-coated carbon nanotubes (Cu-CNTs) have gained considerable attention as promising antimicrobial nanomaterials for preventing biofilm formation on medical devices and hospital-associated surfaces. This review summarizes recent advances in the development and application of Cu-CNT-based antimicrobial coatings, with…

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube coating effect on bacterial resistance and Ti6Al4V substrate material properties.

Carbon-infiltrated carbon nanotube (CI-CNT) coatings have emerged as a promising biomaterial infection prevention strategy due to their inherent topography-driven bacterial resistance. This study examined the impact of CI-CNT manufacturing methods, specifically the use of a hydrogen versus an argon carrier gas environment, on the mechanical properties and bacterial resistance of Ti-6Al-4V (Ti64) coated substrates. Tensile and torsional testing, electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD), and fracture profile analysis were used to characterize variations in substrate yield strength, ultimate tensi

Lipocalin-2 Determination on Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Integrated Circular Electrodes for Diagnosing Ulcerative Colitis.

Ulcerative colitis affects the inner lining of the large intestine, causing discomfort, pain, and digestion issues, and sometimes leading to life-threatening complications. With proper medication, symptoms and inflammation can be reduced, improving the condition. In this research, a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCN)-modified circular interdigitated electrode (circular-IDE) biosensor was developed to detect the ulcerative colitis biomarker lipocalin-2 and measured at 0-2 V. A dual probing strategy with aptamer and antibody on gold nanoparticles was employed for the detection of lipocalin-2. Pr

Plant Cell Wall-Inspired Interfacial Bridging Enables Ultrastrong and Tough Carbon Nanotube Fibers.

Achieving simultaneous enhancement of strength and toughness in carbon nanotube fibers (CNTFs) remains a persistent challenge due to inefficient interfacial load transfer, low nanotube alignment, and high porosity. Herein, inspired by the hierarchical architecture and borate-mediated cross-linking of plant cell walls, we report a bioinspired interfacial bridging strategy to fabricate ultrastrong and tough CNTFs. This approach involves the sequential infusion of poly(pyridobisimidazole) (PIPD) nanofibers and chains into CNTF networks, followed by borate-induced covalent cross-linking and mechan

Self-assembled xK1 rosette nanotube as a nanocarrier for chemotherapeutic drug molecules: a molecular dynamics study.

Chemotherapy is widely recognized as an effective treatment for various types of cancers, relying on chemotherapeutic drugs such as chlorambucil (CBL), camptothecin (CPT), doxorubicin (DOX), and flutamide (FLU) to inhibit cancer cell metastasis through their cytotoxic effects. However, these drugs also interact with noncancerous cells, causing significant side effects, including but not limited to nausea, vomiting, hair loss, peripheral neuropathy, lymphedema, and infertility. Developing nano-based drug vehicles is one approach to alleviate such adverse effects. This study introduces a three-r

Fabricating Thermoconductive Phase-Change Fiber via Solvent-Regulated Encapsulation in Carbon Nanotube Network.

Personal thermal management (PTM) systems are pivotal for energy-efficient thermal regulation. However, conventional phase change fibers (PCFs) are limited by insufficient latent heat capacity and phase change materials (PCMs) leakage. To address these challenges, we encapsulated polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a phase change material within a continuous carbon nanotubes (CNTs) network by coagulation bath solvent regulation. After optimizing the CNTs network contraction effect by controlling the ethanol (EtOH)/water content ratio, the resultant PEG/CNTFs(50wt%EtOH) (obtained from a 50 wt % EtOH c…

Single-walled carbon nanotube biosensor for real-time monitoring of nitric oxide in inflammatory responses.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative inflammatory joint disease affecting millions of people worldwide. The early detection of OA and the continuous monitoring of its progression are essential for managing the disease. In this study, we develop an optical system for monitoring OA-related inflammation by detecting nitric oxide (NO), a molecule that is overproduced in joints during OA. The NO sensor is based on fluorescent single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) coated with single-stranded DNA (ssDNA). The sensor fluorescence was characterized in the presence of cells and biological tissue usin…

Potential Mechanisms of Tunneling Nanotube Formation and Their Role in Pathology Spread in Alzheimer's Disease and Other Proteinopathies.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common type of dementia worldwide. The etiopathogenesis of this disease remains unknown. Currently, several hypotheses attempt to explain its cause, with the most well-studied being the cholinergic, beta-amyloid (Aβ), and Tau hypotheses. Lately, there has been increasing interest in the role of immunological factors and other proteins such as alpha-synuclein (α-syn) and transactive response DNA-binding protein of 43 kDa (TDP-43). Recent studies emphasize the role of tunneling nanotubes (TNTs) in the spread of pathological proteins within the brains of AD pa…

Chirality-induced spin selectivity in functionalized carbon nanotube networks: The role of spin-orbit coupling.

Spin-orbit coupling in a chiral medium is generally assumed to be a necessary ingredient for the observation of the chirality-induced spin s … he magnitude of the CISS signal scales proportionately with the spin-orbit coupling strength of the nanotubes. We also find that nanotube diameter dictates the supramolecular chirality of the medium, which in turn determines the sign of the CISS signal.

Theoretical insights and implications of pH-dependent drug delivery systems using silica and carbon nanotube.

In this paper we have studied the density functional theory of four drugs ibuprofen, alendronate, Sulfasalazine and paracetamol with quartz, propylamine, trimethylamine functionalized quartz and carboxyl modified carbon nanotube. The attractive and repulsive interaction energies between drugs and quartz is obtained at various pH values. The attractive and repulsive energies are well correlated with experimental drug loading and releasing behavior by mesoporous silica nanoparticles. Further, a theoretical model is developed that accounts the electrostatic interaction between silica and drug and

Dual role of pulmonary surfactant corona in modulating carbon nanotube toxicity and benzo[a]pyrene bioaccessibility.

Inhaled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) can deposit in the deep lung, where they interact with pulmonary surfactant (PS) to form coronas, potentially altering the fate and toxicity profile of CNTs. However, the presence of other contaminants in combination with CNTs may affect these interactions. Here, we used passive dosing and fluorescence-based techniques confirm the partial solubilization of BaPs adsorbed on CNTs by PS in simulated alveolar fluid. MD simulations were performed to elucidate the competition of interactions between BaPs, CNTs, and PS. We found that PS play two opposing roles in alter…

Carbon Nanotube Coated Fibrous Tubes for Highly Stretchable Strain Sensors Having High Linearity.

Strain sensors are currently limited by an inability to operate over large deformations or to exhibit linear responses to strain. Producing strain sensors meeting these criteria remains a particularly difficult challenge. In this work, the fabrication of a highly flexible strain sensor based on electrospun thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) fibrous tubes comprising wavy and oriented fibers coated with carboxylated multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is described. By combining spraying and ultrasonic-assisted deposition, the number of CNTs deposited on the electrospun TPU fibrous tube could reach 1…

Histopathology of the broad class of carbon nanotubes and nanofibers used or produced in U.S. facilities in a murine model.

BACKGROUND: Multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nanofibers (CNT/F) have been previously investigated for their potential toxicities; however, comparative studies of the broad material class are lacking, especially those with a larger diameter. Additionally, computational modeling correlating physicochemical characteristics and toxicity outcomes have been infrequently employed, and it is unclear if all CNT/F confer similar toxicity, including histopathology changes such as pulmonary fibrosis. Male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to 40 µg of one of nine CNT/F (MW #1-7 and CNF #1-2) commonly found in exp…
