A device to measure in vivo forces in human flexor tendons during carpal tunnel operations.

An apparatus has been designed to measure the in vivo forces transmitted along human hand flexor tendons during carpal tunnel release procedures. The tendon will be run through three hooks, the central one of which is attached to a load cell. The rationale is that once these forces are known this will aid in the design of repair techniques and rehabilitation regimens. As a first stage, an in vitro validation study is presented using cord subjected to varying forces to mimic an in vivo flexor tendon under varying conditions of use. Our results show that we can accurately and reproducibly measur

New disposable vaginal device (continence guard) in the treatment of female stress incontinence. Design, efficacy and short term safety.

BACKGROUND: To develop a new disposable vaginal device for use during the daytime, and test its efficacy and short-term safety in the treatment of stress incontinence. METHODS: The intravaginal support device was designed from polyurethane, a foam product with documented high tissue compatibility. It was tested in 26 women with the symptom of stress incontinence. Before and after one month's use of the device, a 24-hour home pad weighing test, uroflowmetry, postvoid residual urine and a 3-days voiding diary were made. A questionnaire about the subjective effect and adverse events was filled i

Clinical evaluation of a new temporary atrial pacing catheter: results in 100 patients.

Absence of a temporary atrial electrode that is stable and easily positioned has limited the use of atrial pacing in the hospital setting. A novel electrode involving a performed, 6F "J"-shaped catheter with a 10F anodal sphere and proximal fixed orienting wings 28 cm from the anodal tip was constructed. This design facilitated percutaneous insertion into the subclavian vein and positioning without fluoroscopy. Over a 15-month period, five physicians used the device in 100 patients for control of bradycardia in 56, overdrive suppression of atrial or ventricular tachyarrhythmias in 29, conversi

Toward human-compatible compliant manipulation with an anthropomorphic dexterous hand.

Achieving human-like compliant manipulation remains a fundamental challenge in robot hands due to the difficulty of realizing biomechanical compatibility, compliant interaction, and dexterous operation. To address this, we propose a human-compatible anthropomorphic dexterous hand inspired by the anatomical structure and coordinated motion of the human hand. The design integrates anatomical morphology, joint coordination, and compliant manipulation through a rigid-soft synergistic architecture with a cable-driven mechanism. Flexible thermoplastic polyurethane elastomers and cables emulate human

Self-adaptive under actuated biomimetic soft robotic hand exoskeleton to improve dexterity and grasping capabilities.

This paper introduces a soft hand exoskeleton based on an underactuated biomimetic pulley differential mechanism for fingers flexion including the thumb. The mechanism is powered by a single motor, enabling adaptive movement of the thumb, index and middle fingers to accommodate irregularly shaped objects. Unlike the existing pulley differential mechanisms, the proposed pulley differential design couples the thumb with the index and middle fingers and enforces a mechanical force constraint, where the thumb force is always equal to the combined forces of the index and middle fingers. This provid

Creation and evaluation of 3D printed compostable myringotomy sets: A sustainable proof of concept.

BACKGROUND: Single-use disposable medical supplies contribute significantly to the healthcare sector's carbon footprint. While most myringotomy sets are reusable, there has been a trend towards single-use disposable kits. No published research investigates the creation of surgical supplies using compostable biopolymers, a possible mitigation strategy for single-use disposable waste. Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs), biopolymers synthesized through bacterial fermentation, are compostable at a non-industrial level. This study presents a novel, fully compostable 3D printed myringotomy set as a proof-

Human use conditions in fatigue of intravenous leads used in cardiac implanted electronic devices.

BACKGROUND: Transvenous lead conductors are subject to fatigue fracture from repetitive bending stresses, which are proportional to alternating curvature. A prerequisite for developing a valid preclinical lead-testing standard is knowledge of the stresses on implanted leads - their fatigue environment, but little is known about it. OBJECTIVE: The Human Use Condition Study (HUCS) quantified this fatigue environment, including the relationship between lead stiffness and alternating curvature. METHODS: HUCS was a prospective, observational, multicenter clinical study. Leads from 4 manufacturers

Multifocal Optics for Myopia Control.

The rising prevalence of myopia among children and adolescents necessitates effective interventions to mitigate long-term risks, such as retinal detachment and macular degeneration. Traditional approaches like undercorrection with single-vision lenses have proven ineffective. Recent research underscores the significance of peripheral vision in managing myopia progression. While hyperopic defocus in the peripheral retina may encourage axial elongation, multifocal lenses designed to induce peripheral myopic defocus can potentially curb this elongation. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have de

Comparison of carbon fibre and aluminium materials in the construction of ultralight wheelchairs.

Carbon fibre-reinforced polymers have been used in the sporting goods industry for decades, and wheelchairs have incorporated the material since the late 1980s. There is no independently collected data available on carbon fibre-reinforced polymer wheelchairs' performance on the ANSI/RESNA testing standards, however. This study evaluated three full carbon fibre wheelchair specimens to determine their performance versus similar wheelchairs. Testing determined that while the frames survived more testing cycles than any other wheelchair, the casters and rear tires failed similarly to other devices

Novel intrauterine balloon tamponade systems for postpartum hemorrhage.

INTRODUCTION: Postpartum hemorrhage is the most common cause of maternal death worldwide. Although intrauterine balloon tamponade has been widely used as an effective procedure to control atonic postpartum hemorrhage, intrauterine balloon tamponade fails to control postpartum hemorrhage in approximately one-fifth of cases. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of novel intrauterine balloon tamponade systems for postpartum hemorrhage. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We have developed two novel intrauterine balloon tamponade systems to maintain proper balloon placement. One was a shaft cover

Causes and Prevention of Inappropriate Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator Shocks.

Use of implantable cardioverter-defibrillators as a primary prevention therapy has been shown to reduce mortality in patients after cardiac arrest and also with left ventricular systolic dysfunction. Yet, inappropriate shocks are variably reported and associated with a reduction in quality of life. Inappropriate shocks are the result of environmental causes leading to electromagnetic interference and inappropriate sensing of external noise, device-related causes from inappropriate sensing of physiologic or pathologic signals, and supraventricular arrhythmias. Strategies to reduce inappropriate

[Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) with Transcanalicular Endoillumination (TCE) of the Saccus Lacrimalis].

Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) has been established as a standard procedure of lacrimal surgery, since it causes much less tissue damage than ab externo procedures. Diffiulties in visualization of the target area has been a limitation to the transnasal approach. An improvement of the classical endonasal DCR was achieved by the introduction of a transcanalicular endoillumination (TCE) of the lacrimal sac using a 23-Gauge vitreoretinal light probe, which can easily be intubated into the cannaliculi and advanced into the the lacrimal sac. Illumination of the lacrimal sac guides the endonas

A Coaxial Guide Wire-Catheter Technique to Facilitate Right Adrenal Vein Sampling: Evaluation in 76 Patients.

A technique to facilitate blood sampling from the right adrenal vein is described. Between May 2012 and February 2015, 148 adrenal vein sampling (AVS) procedures were attempted. In 72 procedures, a simple 5-F end-hole catheter was employed. In 76, a coaxial guide wire technique was used when blood could not be aspirated, whereby a 0.018-inch guide wire was passed through the catheter and into a branch of the right adrenal vein and the sample was drawn around the wire by using a side-arm adaptor. Successful sampling was achieved in 71 of the 72 catheter-only procedures (98.6%) and in 75 of the

[Minimally invasive glaucoma surgery using the trabectome].

The main barrier reducing outflow of aqueous humor in open angle glaucomas is the juxtacanalicular trabecular meshwork. The trabectome removes this pathophysiologically altered tissue by electroablation, thus allowing for the collector channels draining Schlemm's canal to directly communicate with the anterior chamber. In studies published so far, about 30% decrease of intraocular pressure and a simultaneous 42% reduction of pressure-lowering eyedrops could be achieved in primary and secondary open angle glaucomas. A clear cornea tunnel is used to advance the trabectome to the trabecular meshw

Engineering metal oxide nanostructures for the fiber optic sensor platform.

This paper presents an effective integration scheme of nanostructured SnO2 with the fiber optic platform for chemical sensing applications based on evanescent optical interactions. By using a triblock copolymer as a structure directing agent as the means of nano-structuring, the refractive index of SnO2 is reduced from >2.0 to 1.46, in accordance with effective medium theory for optimal on-fiber integration. High-temperature stable fiber Bragg gratings inscribed in D-shaped fibers were used to perform real-time characterization of optical absorption and refractive index modulation of metal oxi
