Background and purpose - The increase in shoulder arthroplasty may lead to a burden of revision surgery. This study compared the rate of (2nd) revision following aseptic 1st revision shoulder arthroplasty, considering the type of primary, and the class and type of the revision.Patients and methods - All aseptic 1st revisions of primary total reverse shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA group) and of primary total stemmed and stemless total shoulder arthroplasty (non-rTSA group) procedures reported to our national registry between April 2004 to December 2018 were included. The rate of 2nd revision was d

Seventeen patients who had undergone operative treatment for painful nonunion of a surgical neck fracture of the proximal humerus were evaluated an average of 6.3 years (range, 2-11 years) from the time of surgery to determine clinical and radiographic outcome. Ten patients underwent open reduction and internal fixation with tension band wiring and Rush rods, and 7 underwent proximal humeral hemiarthroplasty. The average age of the patients was 60 years old. After surgery, pain, function, and range of motion improved for both groups. University of California Los Angeles scores improved from an

BACKGROUND: It is unclear if there are significant changes in clinical and radiographic outcomes between 1 and 2 years postoperatively after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The current multicenter study sought to compare patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), range of motion, and radiographic analysis of glenoid and humeral loosening between 1 and 2-years postoperatively in a cohort of patients after primary anatomic TSA (aTSA).
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of patients who underwent primary aTSA between 2017 and 2018 at 2 high-volume shoulder arthroplasty centers and had baseline, 1

BACKGROUND: The impending burden of revision shoulder arthroplasty has increased interest in outcomes of revision procedures. Painful glenoid arthrosis following hemiarthroplasty is a common cause of reoperation, and conversion to anatomic total shoulder arthroplasty is one option.
METHODS: We identified patients who underwent revision of painful hemiarthroplasty to total shoulder arthroplasty over a 15-year period in a single tertiary-care health system. Presurgical and operative data were analyzed for 28 patients who met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients were contacted at a min

Background: Radial head arthroplasty is commonly used for unreconstructable radial head fractures, particularly in cases associated with elbow instability. Both loose-fit monobloc and cemented bipolar radial head prostheses are available, but comparative evidence regarding their clinical and radiographic outcomes remains limited. This study aimed to compare mid-term outcomes between these two implant designs. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted on 26 patients who underwent radial head arthroplasty for acute radial head fractures between November 2020 and October 2023. Fo

Background/Objectives: Various surgical methods have been proposed for the treatment of comminuted Mason III/IV radial head fractures. In particular, the advantages and disadvantages between prosthesis implantation (RHA) or radial head resection (RHR) are not sufficiently quantified in the current literature. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted using PubMed Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Embase in February 2024. Studies conducted on patients with Mason type III or IV radial head fractures and studies relating to surgical methods, including radial head resection or Radi

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is increasingly applied for aortic stenosis in elderly patients with impaired mobility and reduced quality of life. These patients may particularly benefit from postinterventional exercise programs, but no randomized study has evaluated the safety and efficacy of exercise in this population.
METHODS: In a prospective pilot study, 30 patients after TAVI (mean age, 81±6 years, 44% female, 83±34 days postintervention) were randomly allocated 1:1 to a training group (TG) performing 8 weeks of supervised combined endurance and resistance e

BACKGROUND: Insufficiency of the rotator cuff is a major problem after resections of proximal humeral tumors and can limit shoulder motion despite preservation of the deltoid muscle and axillary nerve. Allograft-prosthetic composite reconstruction offers one method to reattach the rotator cuff tendons and has been successful in small studies with short followup. However, data are lacking with regard to implant durability, changes in Musculoskeletal Tumor Society (MSTS) scores over time, and delayed complications with extended followup.

The passage of electric current through a human body causes polarization changes in cell membranes, which can possibly lead to the death of these cells. At the same time, electric energy is transformed to thermal energy, primarily in high resistance tissues. We present a case report of a 22-year-old male who was hit by an electric current with a voltage of 22 kV when he was working on a high-voltage overhead line tower. Primary treatment which included fasciotomies was completed two hours after the injury. Fasciotomies and revisions of all muscle groups were completed on the left upper extremi

BACKGROUND: The incidence of revision shoulder arthroplasty continues to rise, and infection is a common indication for revision surgery. Treatment of periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in the shoulder remains a controversial topic, with the literature reporting varying methodologies, including the use of debridement and implant retention, single-stage and 2-stage surgeries, antibiotic spacers, and resection arthroplasty20. Single-stage revision has been shown to have a low rate of recurrent infection, making it more favorable because it precludes the morbidity of a 2-stage operation. The pr

HYPOTHESIS: Shoulder arthroplasty is an effective treatment for arthritic conditions and intraarticular fractures of the proximal humerus. Treatment options include total and hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder. They hypothesis of this study was that a mandatory statewide discharge database could identify the epidemiology of primary shoulder arthroplasty, 90 day complication rates, implant survival rates, and patient and hospital characteristics associated with complications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We identified patients undergoing primary total shoulder replacement and hemiarthroplasty between

Among the fractures of the proximal humerus--a typical kind of injury affecting elderly people, as well as gainfully employed patients, the comminuted and dislocated humeral head fractures have a specific position because of therapeutical reasons. By means of a retrospective analysis, a review is given of the results of 26 comminuted humeral head fractures type IV-VI according to Neer, treated with a Neer prosthesis type II at the surgical clinic of the Kantonsspital Lucerne between 1983 and 1989. Our interest is mainly concentrated on the functional results and on their correlation with biome
