Pierre Robin syndrome: characteristics of hearing loss, effect of age on hearing level and possibilities in therapy planning.

Hearing loss was studied in 22 patients with Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) aged three to 12 years (median 5.0 years). The results were compared to those obtained in 62 patients with isolated cleft palate (ICP) aged one to 27 years (median 5.5 years). Hearing loss was more frequently found in PRS (73.3 per cent) than in ICP (58.1 per cent) patients (p = 0.02). PRS patients had more ears with moderate (21-40 dB) and severe (> 40 dB) hearing loss, disturbing their social contact, with no tendency to normalization with age (Spearman r = 0.065). In contrast to PRS, ICP patients showed a significant t…

A novel multiple congenital anomaly-mental retardation syndrome with Pierre Robin sequence and cerebellar hypoplasia in two sisters.

We report on the similar phenotypes and clinical course of two sisters. Both patients had an enlarged cisterna magna suggestive of cerebellar hypoplasia, agenesis/hypoplasia of the corpus callosum, Pierre Robin sequence requiring tracheostomy, camptodactyly, microphthalmia, colobomas, seizures, a distinctive facial appearance, global developmental delay, and mental retardation. We propose that the distinct pattern in these sisters constitutes a previously undescribed syndrome of likely autosomal recessive inheritance.

Combined Tongue-Palate Fusion With Alveolar Bands in a Patient With Pierre Robin Sequence and Van der Woude Syndrome.

This report describes the presentation of a newborn male with circumferential tongue-palate fusion associated with cleft palate and alveolar bands. After intraoral adhesions lysis, the patient was diagnosed with Pierre Robin sequence. A family history of cleft lip and palate was noted, and interferon regulatory factor 6 ( IRF6) sequencing revealed a heterozygous variant, confirming the diagnosis of van der Woude syndrome. The disruption of IRF6 resulted in abnormal orofacial development including micrognathia and intraoral adhesions as well as tongue-palate fusion, then resulting in glossoptos

[The laryngeal mask--a valuable instrument for cases of difficult intubation in children. Anesthesiologic management in the presence of Pierre-Robin syndrome].

UNLABELLED: In cases of craniofacial and mandibulofacial malformations, which are mostly treated during childhood, difficult intubation conditions must generally be expected. In such cases, the laryngeal mask airway (LMA) an alternative instrument for use in endotracheal intubation is a new aid for ventilation. In certain instances, it can be used alone to induce general anaesthesia. Reports of endotracheal intubation by means of the LMA in adults have also been published. CASE REPORT: In our case, a 6-year-old boy with Pierre-Robin syndrome (triad: micrognathia, broad palatoschisis, glossopt

Pulmonary oedema following relief of upper airway obstruction in the Pierre-Robin syndrome: a consequence of early palatal repair?

Pulmonary oedema occurred following relief of an acute upper airway obstruction in an infant with Pierre-Robin syndrome undergoing cleft palate repair. We anticipate an increased prevalence of this phenomenon in view of the present trend for early palatal repair, and would advocate the routine use of a nasopharyngeal airway after operation in infants with severe micrognathia.

Fetal manifestation of the Fine-Lubinsky syndrome. Brachycephaly, deafness, cataract, microstomia and mental retardation syndrome complicated by Pierre-Robin anomaly and polyhydramnios.

OBJECTIVES: We report on a female fetus of 24 weeks gestational age with Fine-Lubinsky syndrome (FLS), representing the 7th case published so far. METHODS: Prenatal ultrasound was performed at 22+1 weeks of gestation and thorough postmortem examination was made after termination of pregnancy. RESULTS: The diagnosis of FLS in the fetus was based on characteristic features that were already apparent in early prenatal life, such as growth deficiency, brachycephaly, flat face with associated dysmorphic signs, microstomia and cataract, while deafness and mental retardation, which are syndrome-spe

Humidified versus nonhumidified low-flow oxygen therapy in children with Pierre-Robin syndrome: Study protocol for a randomised controlled trial.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the necessity of oxygen humidification for low-flow oxygen therapy in children with Pierre-Robin syndrome. BACKGROUND: Whether to carry out humidification or not in the low-flow oxygen delivery remains unclear, and currently, there is no published study on this issue in the population of children. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct more studies to elucidate this issue. DESIGN: A randomised controlled trial. METHODS: We attempt to report this randomised controlled trial to comply with the Standard Protocol Items: Recommendations for Interventional Trials (

A Comparison of Outcomes After Palatoplasty in Patients With Non-Syndromic Pierre Robin Sequence Versus Patients With Non-Syndromic Isolated Cleft Palate.

The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare outcomes of cleft palate repair in patients with non-syndromic Pierre Robin sequence (NS-PRS) versus those with non-syndromic isolated cleft palate (NS-ICP). Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) was defined as a diagnosis of the triad of microretrognathia, glossoptosis, and cleft palate, and the severity of PRS was assessed based on the presence of respiratory and feeding problems. All patients underwent palatoplasty between January 2000 and December 2011. The authors examined age at palatoplasty, type of cleft palate, fistula rate, velopharyngeal

Navigation-Guided Cochlear Implantation in Complex Congenital Ear Anomalies: Pierre Robin Syndrome With External Aural Atresia and Middle Ear Agenesis.

Cochlear implantation in patients with complex craniofacial anomalies such as Pierre Robin syndrome poses significant surgical challenges, particularly in the presence of external aural atresia and middle ear agenesis. The authors present the case of a female patient diagnosed with Pierre Robin syndrome at 7 weeks of age, who exhibited glossoptosis, cleft palate, micrognathia, and multiple systemic anomalies. Audiological evaluation confirmed profound bilateral sensorineural hearing loss, and imaging revealed severe malformations of the external, middle, and inner ear. Sequential bilateral coc…

A Novel 12q13.2-q13.3 Microdeletion Syndrome With Combined Features of Diamond Blackfan Anemia, Pierre Robin Sequence and Klippel Feil Deformity.

Diamond-Blackfan anemia (DBA) is a rare congenital erythroid aplasia with a highly heterogeneous genetic background; it usually occurs in infancy. Approximately 30-40% of patients have other associated congenital anomalies; in particular, facial anomalies, such as cleft palate, are part of about 10% of the DBA clinical presentations. Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is a heterogeneous condition, defined by the presence of the triad of glossoptosis, micrognathia and cleft palate; it occurs in 1/8500 to 1/14,000 births. Klippel Feil (KF) syndrome is a complex of both osseous and visceral anomalies, c

Use of External Distractors and the Role of Imaging Prior to Mandibular Distraction in Infants With Isolated Pierre Robin Sequence and Stickler Syndrome.

IMPORTANCE: Computed tomographic (CT) scans are often obtained before mandibular distraction osteogenesis in patients with isolated Pierre Robin sequence. There is concern regarding the risk of radiation exposure from CT in children. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether preoperative CT is necessary for adequate airway, feeding, and aesthetic outcomes following mandibular distraction with external distraction devices in infants with isolated Pierre Robin sequence. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: In a retrospective review of medical records, infants who underwent mandibular distraction between Ja

Sizes of dental arches in children with the Pierre Robin syndrome and isolated cleft palate aged from 0.2 to six years.

Development of the dental arches and length and weight at birth were studied from 0.2 to 6 years of age in 78 children with Pierre Robin syndrome and 58 with isolated cleft palate. The growth of the maxillary dental arches was similar in both groups before palatal closure. The anterior width of the maxillary arch did not differ between the groups during the six year follow up period, but the depths of the maxillary and mandibular arches were significantly less (< 0.001) in the group with Pierre Robin syndrome compared with those with isolated cleft palates at the age of 3 and 6 years. The mand…

Evaluation of Interforaminal Mandible Region of Individuals With Pierre Robin Sequence and Treacher Collins Syndrome Through the Cone-Beam Computed Tomography.

The Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) and the Treacher Collins syndrome (TCS) are conditions that cause significant abnormalities of jaw. This study was conducted in anticipation of evaluating the morphology of interforaminal region and identify the anatomic variations: anterior loop and mandibular incisive canal, in individuals with PRS and TCS by cone-beam computed tomography and compare them with individuals without craniofacial anomalies. By applying the t-test, the results showed no statistically significant difference, allowing to infer that there are no significant differences in interforamin

Predictors of residual obstructive sleep apnea after mandibular distraction osteogenesis in infants with Pierre Robin sequence: Insight on syndromic stratification.

BACKGROUND: Mandibular distraction osteogenesis (MDO) improves obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in infants with Pierre Robin sequence (PRS), but residual disease is common. We sought to identify predictors of residual severe OSA after MDO. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of infants with PRS who underwent MDO and postoperative polysomnography (PSG) at a tertiary pediatric center between 2019 and 2025. Residual severe OSA was defined a priori as postoperative obstructive apnea-hypopnea index (oAHI) > 10 events/hour or postoperative need for a tracheostomy. Candidate predictors w

Combined use of a McGrath® MAC video laryngoscope and Frova Intubating Introducer in a patient with Pierre Robin syndrome: a case report.

Patients with Pierre Robin syndrome are characterized by micrognathia, retrognathia, glossoptosis, and respiratory obstruction and are prone to have a difficult-to-intubate airway. The McGrath® MAC video laryngoscope provides a better view of the glottis than a Macintosh laryngoscope, but it is not easy to insert an endotracheal tube through the vocal cords because a video laryngoscope has a much greater curvature than that of a conventional direct laryngoscope and an endotracheal tube has a different curvature. The Frova Intubating Introducer is used as a railroad for an endotracheal tube in …

Chromosome 3q22.2-q26.2 Interstitial Deletion in a Patient With Wisconsin Syndrome, Blepharophimosis-Ptosis-Epicanthus Inversus Syndrome, Dandy-Walker Malformation, Pierre Robin Sequence, and Recurrent Infections.

Wisconsin syndrome is a very rare genetic condition characterized by coarse facies, prominent nasal tip, bushy high arched/upsweeping eyebrows, and a full/everted lower lip. Deletion of chromosome 3q24q25 region is considered critical for its manifestation. Deletion of the adjoining chromosome region 3q24 is associated with Dandy-Walker malformation, while 3q22.3 deletion is associated with blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome. Here, we report an individual with chromosome 3q22.2-q26.2 interstitial deletion presenting with Wisconsin syndrome, blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus

Revision alloplastic temporomandibular joint reconstruction for re-advancement in syndromic ankylosis: a case report involving simultaneous Klippel-Feil syndrome and Pierre Robin sequence.

PURPOSE: Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) ankylosis impairs jaw function, limiting mouth opening, speech, and mastication, and rendering airway access high-risk. In patients with syndromic conditions such as Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) and Klippel-Feil Syndrome (KFS), ankylosis presents additional challenges due to airway compromise, restricted mandibular growth, and complex skeletal abnormalities. In addition, predicting the ability to advance the mandible using a prosthesis may be challenging due to anatomic factors. METHODS: We report the case of an 18-year-old female with TMJ ankylosis, PRS,
