INTRODUCTION: During spaceflight, it is important to consider the mechanisms by which surgeries and medical procedures can be safely and efficiently conducted. Instruments used to carry out these processes need to be sterilized. Thus, we have designed and tested a three-dimensional-printed (3D-printed) portable sterilizer that implements far ultraviolet-C (Far UV-C) light radiation to disinfect bacteria and microorganisms from surgical instruments.METHODS: The sterilizer was 3D-printed with polylactic acid filament. Effectiveness was assessed through three trials at differing times of steriliz

BACKGROUND: Nerve compression symptoms and spinal instability, resulting from spinal metastases, significantly impact the quality of life for patients. A 3D-printed vertebral body is considered an effective approach to reconstruct bone defects following en bloc resection of spinal tumors. The advantage of this method lies in its customized shape and innermost porous structure, which promotes bone ingrowth and leads to reduced postoperative complications.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to assess the effectiveness of 3D-printed auto-stable artificial vertebrae in the en bloc resection

Residual powder is a defect in powder bed fusion-based additive manufacturing (3D printing), and it is difficult to completely remove it from as-printed materials. In addition, it is not necessary to apply 3D printed implants with residual powder in the clinic. The immunological response triggered by the residual powder is an important area of study in medical research. To further understand the possible immunological reactions and hidden dangers caused by residual powders in vivo, this study compared the immunological reactions and osteolysis caused by typical powders for four implant materia

The number of patients with bone defects caused by trauma, bone tumors, and osteoporosis has increased considerably. The repair of irregular, recurring, and large bone defects poses a great challenge to clinicians. Bone tissue engineering is emerging as an appropriate strategy to replace autologous bone grafting in the repair of critically sized bone defects. However, the suitability of bone tissue engineering scaffolds in terms of structure, mechanics, degradation, and the microenvironment is inadequate. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is an advanced additive-manufacturing technology widely u

OBJECTIVES: There is a requirement within ear therapeutics for a delivery system capable of safely delivering controlled doses to the inner ear. However, the anatomy and sensitivity of the inner ear make current delivery systems problematic and often ineffective. Therefore, a new delivery system is required to overcome these issues and provide a more efficacious system in the treatment of inner ear disease. This study assesses the potential of 3D printing (3DP) as a fabrication method for an implantable drug delivery system (DDS) to the inner ear.
KEY FINDINGS: Three implantable designs of va

PURPOSE: To utilize melt electrowriting (MEW) technology using poly-(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) coupled with a 2-step co-culturing strategy for the development of a conjunctival bi-layer synthetic construct.
METHODS: Melt electrowritten scaffolds using PCL were fabricated using an in-house-built MEW printer. Human conjunctival stromal cells (CjSCs) and epithelial cells (CjECs) were isolated from donor tissue. A 2-step co-culture method was done by first seeding the CjSCs and culturing for 4 weeks to establish a stromal layer, followed by CjECs and co-culturing for 2 more weeks. Cultured cells were

Dental decay is a highly prevalent chronic disease affecting people from all ages. Clinically, fluoride supplementation is the primary strategy in the prevention of dental decay. However, the current existing self-application formulations such as gels or mouthwashes are rapidly cleared after administration, resulting in modest efficacy even after repeated applications. Therefore, a user-friendly formulation that can provide sustained fluoride release in the oral cavity is of great interest for dental decay prevention. Herein, we report the utilization of fused deposition modelling to fabricate

Rhythmic bioelectrical 'slow waves' are a key regulatory mechanism underpinning digestion. The pyloric sphincter separates the independent slow wave and contractile behavior of the stomach and small intestine, while also regulating gastric emptying. In this study, we develop and validate anatomically-specific electrode cradles and analysis techniques in pigs, to map in vivo slow wave activation across this critical pylorus region for the first time. 3D printed electrode cradles were developed from reconstructions of magnetic resonance images, to accurately capture anatomical geometry. In this work, a 3D printed sensor modified with a water-stable complex of Fe(III) basic benzoate is presented for the voltammetric detection of glucose (GLU) in acidic epidermal skin conditions. The GLU sensor was produced by the drop-casting of Fe(III)-cluster ethanolic mixture on the surface of a 3D printed electrode fabricated by a carbon black loaded polylactic acid filament. The oxidation of GLU was electrocatalyzed by Fe(III), which was electrochemically generated in-situ by the Fe(III)-cluster precursor. The GLU determination was carried out by differential pulse voltammetry without the

OBJECTIVES: The management of foreign body aspirations (FBA) is dreaded by pediatric physicians due to the high risk of respiratory distress and a potential fatal outcome, favored by a lack of experience of young specialists. Furthermore, there has been an increasing requirement for low-cost simulation. The aim was to describe the step-by-step manufacturing process and to validate a low-cost, easily home-made training model of pediatric tracheo-bronchial tree (pTBT) for simulation-based training in order to teach young physicians to practice foreign body (FBA) extractions.

Bioprinting specific tissues with robust viability is a great challenge, requiring a delicate balance between a densely cellular distribution and hydrogel network crosslinking density. Microtissues composed of tissue-specific mesenchymal stem cells and extra cellular matrix (ECM) particles provide an alternative scheme for realizing biomimetic cell density and microenvironment. Nevertheless, due to their instability during manufacturing, scarce efforts have been made to date to assemble them using rapid prototyping methods. Here, a novel microtissue bioink with good printability and cellular v

Microneedle arrays provide an efficient tool for transdermal drug delivery in a minimally invasive and painless manner, showing great potential applications in medicine. However, it remains challenging to fabricate the desired microneedle arrays, because of their micron-scale size and fine structure. Novel manufacturing technologies are very wanted for the development of microneedle arrays, which would solidly advance the clinical translation of microneedle arrays. 3D printing technology is a powerful manufacturing technology with superiority in fabricating personalized and complex structures.

High tibial osteotomy (HTO) is an effective surgical treatment for isolated medial compartment knee osteoarthritis; however, widespread adoption is limited due to difficulty in achieving the planned correction, and patient dissatisfaction due to soft tissue irritation. The aim of this study was to assess the accuracy of a novel HTO system with 3D printed patient specific implants and surgical guides using cadaveric specimens. Local ethics committee approval was obtained. The novel opening wedge HTO procedure was performed on eight cadaver leg specimens. Whole lower limb CT scans pre- and post-

In this featured review manuscript, the aim is to present a critical survey on the processes available for fabricating bioartificial organs (BAOs). The focus will be on hollow tubular organs for the transport of anabolites and catabolites, i.e., vessels, trachea, esophagus, ureter and urethra, and intestine. First, the anatomic hierarchical structures of tubular organs, as well as their principal physiological functions, will be presented, as this constitutes the mandatory requirements for effectively designing and developing physiologically relevant BAOs. Second, 3D bioprinting, solution elec
