PURPOSE: To analyze corneal curvature and visual acuity after asymmetric intrastromal corneal rings implantation, not following the nomogram proposed by the manufacturer.
METHODS: Seven eyes of seven keratoconus patients which had asymmetric corneal rings implanted in their corneal stroma were studied.
RESULTS: A flattening of the average corneal keratometry was noted in all patients, as well as an increase of the postoperative corneal asymmetry.

We report 2 cases of vertical implantation of Intacs (Addition Technology) for the correction of keratoconus with temporal cones. Case 1 was a 16-year-old boy. In the left eye, the refraction was -4.50 x 100, with an uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) of 0.5 and a best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 0.7. A 50-year-old woman had implantation of intrastromal corneal ring segments for recurrent keratoconus 15 years after penetrating keratoplasty. PURPOSE: To observe the effects of perforating prosthokeratoplasty on patients with leucoma who failed in keratoplasty or were not suitable for keratoplasty, and improved their vision.
METHODS: Five cases with leucoma (4 with chemical burn and 1 with blast) received Yakimenko Style keratoprosthesis implantation. Pseudophakos decentration produces symptoms such as glare, halos, and other visual aberrations. We have reviewed 161 eyes of patients who had an intercapsular cataract extraction with intraocular lens (IOL) implantation with a follow-up of at least six months. Mean decentration was 0.54 mm. It was 0.46 mm for the lenses implanted symmetrically in the bag, 0.65 mm for those implanted in the sulcus, and 0.91 mm for those implanted asymmetrically (bag-sulcus). The differences between the lenses fixated in the bag and those asymmetrically situated were statistically significant (P less than .001).

The authors analyze the results of early (on days 5-8 postoperation) contact correction with soft contact lenses (SCL), carried out in 126 infants (206 eyes), operated on for congenital cataract extraction at the age of 2-12 mos. Soviet IOZM, Czechoslovak Spofa-lens, and American Bausch and Lomb lenses have been applied for 18-14 hrs daily, in parallel with the treatment for amblyopia (direct occlusion, a total exposure of the retina), carried out at home. A thorough adaptation, observance of the hygiene and schedule of the lens use have been a guarantee of the absence of ocular complications.

A 58-year-old airline pilot had cataract surgery with implantation of a posterior chamber intraocular lens with four positioning holes around the optic edge. During periods of maximum pupil dilation, such as at night, visual aberrations including glare, monocular diplopia, and haloes occurred and he was unable to work in his occupation. Binocular vision was tested in 106 pseudophakic patients 1 week after unilateral implantation of a Simcoe posterior chamber lens with 10 degrees angled haptics. Binocular functions are resumed immediately after surgery. Visual acuity, or rather the difference in visual acuity between the right and left eyes is mainly responsible for the quality of binocular vision. PURPOSE: The most commonly applied prosthetic devices for corneal blindness in the setting of severe cicatricial keratoconjunctivitis are the Boston keratoprosthesis type II and the modified osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis, with these requiring either normal eyelid skin or a healthy cuspid tooth, respectively. We report the case of a 4-year-old boy diagnosed with keratitis-ichthyosis-deafness (KID) syndrome with long-term follow-up, including multiple surgical and nonsurgical treatments. Genetic testing revealed a missense GJB2 mutation (p.Asp50Asn).
