Fatigue Threshold R-Curves for Dental Lithium Disilicate Glass-Ceramics.

Chemical and mechanical fatigue degradation in ceramic materials is generally inconspicuous yet ubiquitous, to the effect that clinical frac … al growth under cyclic loading in a wet environment. Using 3 modern dental lithium disilicate glass-ceramics, we demonstrate the extent of R-curve degradation up to a threshold of 10 million cycles (~30 y in service) and draw parallels between the scope of fatigue degradation and the size of the microstructural units responsible for toughening mechanisms i …

Characterization and properties of novel gallium-doped calcium phosphate ceramics.

Addition of a gallium (Ga) precursor in the typical reaction protocols used for the preparation of β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) led to novel Ga-doped β-TCP ceramics with rhombohedral structures (R3c space group). From the refinement of their X-ray diffraction patterns, it was found that the incorporation of Ga in the β-TCP network occurs by substitution of one of the five calcium (Ca) sites, while occupation of another Ca site decreases in inverse proportion to the Ga content in the structure. The Ga local environment and the modification of the phosphorus environments due to the Ga/Ca subst…

Lu3+ Substituted Gd3Ga2Al3O12:Ce Ceramics for Improved X-Ray Imaging.

Ce3+-activated Gd3(Al,Ga)5O12:Ce scintillation ceramics have been widely studied due to their excellent scintillation properties. However, the relatively long radiative lifetime and slow decay components limit their applications in X-ray imaging. To address these issues, Lu3+ ions were introduced to partially substitute Gd3+ ions, thereby weakening the role of self-trapped states in the excitation process of Ce3+ and reducing the negative effects caused by shallow electron traps. As a result, the scintillation decay time was, overall, shortened, and an average decay time of 63 ns was obtained …

Edge chipping and translucency comparison among lithium silicate-based ceramics.

PURPOSE: Lithium disilicate glass-ceramics have excellent esthetic characteristics, but lack the strength of zirconia. Some newer lithium silicates now contain zirconia and are marketed as "zirconia-reinforced" with the implication that they are improved in strength. The purpose of this study was to determine the edge chip resistance/toughness and translucency of lithium silicate-based glass-ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four lithium silicate/disilicate glass-ceramic materials, IPS e.max CAD-HT/MT and GC Initial LiSi-HT/LT blocks, and two zirconia-lithium silicate glass-ceramic materials, …

Surface Integrity of Glass-Ceramics by Laser-Assisted Diamond Cutting.

Glass-ceramic optical components are extensively employed in advanced optical systems. The high-hardness and low-fracture toughness of glass-ceramics make it prone to cracks and subsurface damage during conventional cutting. The laser-assisted diamond cutting method can significantly improve the nano-cutting performance of glass-ceramics by locally heating and softening the material. However, its dynamic removal mechanisms remain unclear. The coupling mechanisms between the laser thermal field and the mechanical response of the material require further investigation. This study aims to reveal …

Enhanced Mechanical Properties of Mn- and Fe-Doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 Ceramics.

The mechanical properties of Mn- and Fe-doped Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 ceramics in unpoled and poled states were examined and analyzed for the first time through measurements of Young's modulus, the elastic modulus, Poisson's number, compressibility modulus K, hardness, fracture toughness and bending strength on one hand and by stress-strain measurements on the other hand. It was found that both the introduction of Fe and Mn ions into Na0.5Bi0.5TiO3 and E-poling lead to improvements in their mechanical properties. The additives also cause improvement of the piezoelectric properties. The stress-strain cu…

Ceramic-on-Ceramic or Metal-on-Polyethylene: The Bearing of Choice after Ceramic Component Fracture in Total Hip Arthroplasty along with Concise Follow-Up of the Previous Cohort.

OBJECTIVE: We previously reported the questionable result of reoperation using metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) bearing after the fracture of the ceramic component. After the report, we abandoned the use of MoP; instead, we used ceramic-on-ceramic (CoC) bearing. This report aimed to present the outcome of reoperation to CoC bearing after ceramic component failures along with the longer-term outcome of the previously reported cohort with an MoP bearing. RESULTS: The mean follow-up of the MoP cohort was extended from 4.3 years to 8.8 years. Metallosis had occurred in three of nine patients of the pr

Sterilization of Ceramic Sharpening Stones.

Traditionally, periodontal hand instruments are honed or sharpened during patient care as they dull easily during contact with enamel, calculus and cementum. This approach is taught in dental and hygiene schools around the world and remains the standard of care. Recently, some professional organizations have questioned whether this practice should be abandoned because of safety issues. Questions have been raised whether sharpening stones can be properly sterilized and whether the sharpening of contaminated instruments poses a health hazard for the provider. Using bacteria culture techniques an

Facing the challenges of ceramic veneers.

Ceramic veneers are extremely popular and have been used for many years. In spite of their phenomenal success, they offer numerous challenges during service. In this column, I have identified and discussed several degenerative situations commonly observed, and I have described methods of preventing or reducing the problems. When properly placed, ceramic veneers are among the most beautiful and long-lasting of all dental restorations.

Health hazards of ceramic artists.

Ceramic artists can be exposed to many hazards including metals (such as lead), fibrogenic dusts (such as silica), heat, repetitive motion, radiation, and toxic emissions from kilns. The health risks of these exposures have not been well characterized among artists, although limited information is available from commercial potteries. Adverse health effects may be prevented by using less hazardous materials (such as lead-free glazes), improved ventilation, and proper work practices. Special precautions must be in place if children have access to the ceramics studio. The use of glazed ceramic di…

Survival rate of ceramic inlays.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the survival rate of ceramic inlays provided in a practice environment by one of the authors over the past decade. METHODS: 183 inlays were examined in 67 patients. The interval between placement and assessment was, on average, 4 years (s.d. 2.75 years) and varied from 4 months to 10 years. Kaplan-Meier survival-type curves were used to assess the survival rate. RESULTS: Five inlays failed: four due to endodontic reasons and one due to fracture. Four failures were in permanent molar teeth while the other was in a premolar tooth. A succ

Hydroxyapatite ceramic as a bone substitute.

We have used hydroxyapatite ceramic as a bone substitute for grafting in extensive bone replacement. Hydroxyapatite is composed of calcium phosphate and is incorporated into bone as a physiological mineral. It is not antigenic, carcinogenic or osteogenic. The material used in this study differs from other hydroxyapatite ceramics in that it is an interconnected porous system. Between 1981 and 1986 we used this material on forty five occasions in 44 patients. It was combined with autologous cancellous bone graft in 38 cases and used alone in a further seven. It was usually employed to fill defec…

Fracture-dissociation of ceramic liner.

The use of BIOLOX delta ceramic (CeramTec AG, Plochingen, Germany) has been increasing. This ceramic prevents cracking by restraining the phase transformation due to the insertion of nano-sized, yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia into the alumina matrix. This restrains the progress of cracking through the formation of platelet-like crystal or whiskers due to the addition of an oxide additive. We observed a case of BIOLOX delta ceramic liner (CeramTec AG) rim fracture 4 months postoperatively. Radiographs showed that the ceramic liner was subluxated from the acetabular cup. Scratches on the

Ceramic on ceramic total hip arthroplasty and liner fracture. Two case reports and review of literature.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Ceramic on ceramic bearing surfaces in total hip arthroplasty are rising in number with the purpose of reducing debris osteolysis in young patients. New generation ceramics drastically reduced the well known problem of liner's fracture associated with this material but this still represents a complication. METHODS: We present the only two cases of acetabular liner fracture we had in our department, on a total of 252 patients, since we use CoC bearing surfaces in THR (2005-2019) analyzing symptoms and causes of this complication. Review of recent literature focu…

Comparison between 28 mm and 32 mm ceramic-on-ceramic bearings in total hip replacement.

Large femoral heads have become popular in total hip replacement (THR) as a method of reducing the risk of dislocation. However, if large heads are used in ceramic-on-ceramic THR, the liner must be thinner, which may increase the risk of fracture. To compare the rates of ceramic fracture and dislocation between 28 mm and 32 mm ceramic heads, 120 hips in 109 patients (51 men and 58 women, mean age 49.2 years) were randomised to THR with either a 28 mm or a 32 mm ceramic articulation. A total of 57/60 hips assigned to the 28 mm group and 55/60 hips assigned to the 32 mm group were followed for a
