Reassessment of Radiation Exposure From Bone Scintigraphy.

AIM: This study was aimed to re-determine the radiation dose rate emitted from the patients who underwent bone scintigraphy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A mean of 20.87±2.54 mCi 99mTc-MDP was injected into patients. A GM counter was used to measure dose rates in 3 different periods, at intervals of 25, 50, 100, 150, and 200 cm from the patient's anterior for head, thorax, abdomen, and pelvis levels. Measurements were used to determine patient-induced environmental doses and radiation doses to personnel/patient relatives. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: There were strong correlations between mean dose rate

Physician knowledge of nuclear medicine radiation exposure.

PURPOSE: Because physician knowledge of patient exposure to ionizing radiation from computed tomography (CT) procedures previously has been recognized as poor, the purpose of this systematic review is to determine whether physician or physician trainee knowledge of patient exposure to radiation from nuclear medicine procedures is similarly insufficient. METHODS: Online databases and printed literature were systematically searched to acquire peer-reviewed published research studies involving assessment of physician or physician trainee knowledge of patient radiation exposure levels incurred du…

Reducing radiation exposure using commonly available objects.

OBJECTIVES: One and a half years have passed since the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant disaster. The environmental radiation dose rate … oard, and a wooden board of the same thickness. CONCLUSIONS: To protect residents from unnecessary radiation exposure in the existing exposure situation, covering contaminated soil with a wooden board or a magazine, either of them 20 mm thick, is useful to reduce the radiation dose.

[Risk from prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation].

Exposure to ionizing radiation during pregnancy always is a worrisome event. Knowledge of teratogenic and carcinogenic mechanisms based on reliable scientific data (ICRP 84) allows appropriate management of patients following exposure to ionizing radiation. Radiation exposure in the setting of diagnostic imaging studies is not associated with an increased risk of fetal malformation; however, the risk of childhood malignancy is minimally increased. This information must be provided to parents so they may reach an informed decision with regards to the outcome of the pregnancy. The analysis of th…

Malformations after radiation exposure of preimplantation stages.

Our studies have shown that, contrary to the opinion in most textbooks, it is possible to increase the number of malformed fetuses in one of our mouse strains (originally "Heiligenberger Stamm", meanwhile HLG/Zte) by radiation exposure of zygotes or of subsequent preimplantation stages. The malformation affected most pronouncedly is gastroschisis, a defect occurring at a frequency of 1 to 4% in the controls. The observed increase is strain specific (C57Bl mice or (HLGxC57Bl)F1 hybrids do not react in the same way), it is accompanied by an increased frequency of chromosomal aberrations in skin …

Radiation exposure during dynamic hip screw operation.

Exposure to radiation by surgeon and patient was measured in ten cases during insertion of a dynamic hip screw, using image intensified screening. There were low levels of irradiation of the thyroid and eyes of the surgeon. However, the dominant hand of the surgeon was often exposed to higher levels. The use of a memory during screening significantly reduced the level of radiation measured (P less than 0.05). Recommendations are made for reducing radiation exposure by the surgeon, and a method is described to measure the irradiation of surgeons' hands.

A radiopharmacological study without human radiation exposure.

The development, study and control of new drugs today is hardly conceivable without nuclear medicine studies. Nuclear physicians on ethical commissions bear great responsibility in the planning and execution of such studies. In order to protect subjects and patients those nuclear techniques are therefore to be welcome which do not include exposure to radiation. Nuclear techniques used in in-vitro diagnostics (RIA) and the determination of naturally occurring nuclides incorporated in the human body belong to this category. With the aid of a clinico-pharmacological study of a new combination of

Trends in Radiation Exposure With the Refinement of Radiation Exposure Categories in Congenital Cardiac Catheterization: Insights From the CRISP Registry.

BACKGROUND: The Congenital Cardiac Catheterization Project on Outcomes (C3PO) registry proposed 3-tier radiation exposure categories (REC: I [low], II [medium], and III [high]) consisting of 40 procedure types. This study sought to evaluate the recent trend of radiation exposure in the Catheterization Risk Score for Pediatrics (CRISP) registry organized by the Congenital Cardiovascular Interventional Study Consortium. METHODS: The analysis was conducted on a comprehensive data set from the CRISP registry, covering 13 institutions from January 1, 2016, to December 31, 2020. Radiation dosage in…

Radiation exposure for intraoperative 3D scans in a hybrid operating room: how to reduce radiation exposure for the surgical team.

BACKGROUND: Hybrid operating rooms are used in different fields of surgery. In orthopedic surgery, the possibility of a 3D scan of difficult anatomical regions (spine, pelvis) showed promising results not only in navigated screw placement. The associated exposure to radiation raises questions regarding potential risks for the operating room personal and the patient. The present study focuses on scatter radiation during 3D scans in a hybrid operating room, the adjacent rooms, and methods to reduce radiation exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: [Formula: see text] i2 dosimeters were used to measure …

Comprehensive radiation shield minimizes operator radiation exposure in coronary and structural heart procedures.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the efficacy of a novel comprehensive shield designed to minimize radiation exposure (RE) to Physicians performing coronary and structural heart procedures. BACKGROUND: The Protego™ radiation shielding system (Image Diagnostics Inc., Fitchburg, Ma) is designed to provide comprehensive protection from RE and has been State certified sufficient to allow operators to perform procedures without orthopedically burdensome lead aprons. METHODS: This single center two-group cohort study assessed the efficacy of this shield in a large number of cardiac procedures (cor…

Comprehensive Radiation Shield Minimizes Operator Radiation Exposure and Obviates Need for Lead Aprons.

BACKGROUND: The catheterization laboratory predisposes to occupational health hazards. Chronic radiation exposure (RE) direct injuries include a predilection to cataracts and concerns for cancers. Indirectly adverse effects underly the prevalence of orthopedic maladies in interventionists, linked to the burden of mandatory protective lead aprons. A novel comprehensive shielding system (Protego, Image Diagnostics Inc) has been validated in early studies to provide excellent radiation protection. The system is designed to reduce operator RE sufficient to eliminate the need for personal lead apro…

Case Report: Occupation Radiation Disease, Skin Injury, and Leukemia After Accidental Radiation Exposure.

Objective: Follow-up observation of radiation accident in which a worker developed acute radiation disease and eventually died of leukemia. The case provided key practical information for the study on clinical effects of radiation on the health of workers. Case Presentation: We observed and followed-up the progression and effect of radiation exposure at various stages in a 28-year-old male patient. We examined the chromosomal morphology, white blood cell count, and sperm count. Laboratory tests for leukemia diagnosis and other clinical parameters were performed. Results: After the patient was …

Acute radiation enteritis caused by dose-dependent radiation exposure in dogs: experimental research.

Accidental or intended radiation exposure in mass casualty settings presents a serious and on-going threat. The development of mitigating and treating agents requires appropriate animal models. Unfortunately, the majority of research on radiation enteritis in animals has lacked specific assessments and targeted therapy. Our study showed beagle dogs, treated by intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) for abdominal irradiation, were administered single X-ray doses of 8-30 Gy. The degree of intestinal tract injury for all of the animals after radiation exposure was evaluated with regard to c…
