Skeletal abnormalities of hands and feet in Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl (LMBB) syndrome: a radiographic study.

OBJECTIVE: To identify radiological changes of the hands and feet in a large group of patients with Laurence-Moon-Bardet-Biedl syndrome. DESIGN: Postero-anterior views of hands and feet were obtained and analysed. PATIENTS: The material consists of 43 Scandinavian patients with the syndrome (24 males and 19 females; age 3 weeks to 57 years, median 23 years at the time of radiological examination). RESULTS AND CONCLUSIONS: Polydactyly of the hands and feet is one of the main criteria. This was noted clinically in 33 of 43 patients, but all but 3 had been operated on before this radiological

Orodigitofacial syndromes type I and II: clinical and surgical studies.

Eleven patients were followed at the multidisciplinary facial cleft department from 1963 to 1993. Nine had orodigitofacial (ODF) I syndrome (Papillon-Leage, 1954) and two had ODF II syndrome (Mohr, 1941). The authors observed seven median clefts of the upper lip, eight atypical cleft palates, nine lingual tumors, ten polylobed tongues, four ankyloglossia. All vestibular frenula were hypertrophied. Facial analysis showed five facial hypertelorisms, eight epicanthal folds, ten anomalies of the forehead. Nasal anomalies were constant with ten alar hypoplasia and four nasal curves. Syndactyly was

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome (with or without unilateral unsegmented bar).

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome is characterized by autosomal recessive inheritance, failure of normal spinal segmentation causing symmetrical block vertebrae or scoliosis, and lordosis. There is a disproportionately short trunk. Some patients have a unilateral unsegmented bar. Other skeletal changes include carpal synostosis, usually capitate-hamate and lunate-triquetrum. Tarsal synostoses were present in patients in whom the feet were radiographed. Stature is short. The feet are flat. Cleft palate and sensorineural or mixed hearing loss are variable manifestations. We have reviewed t

Digito-reno-cerebral syndrome: confirmation of Eronen syndrome.

In 1985, Eronen et al. described a new autosomal recessive syndrome with absence of the distal phalanges of the toes and fingers, renal defect and cerebral anomalies (dilated ventricles or seizures). Two unrelated children affected by this syndrome enable us to accept its autonomy and delineate its nosology. Variability of the expression of the renal and cerebral manifestations is emphasized.

Split hand and food deformity and the syndrome of ectrodactyly, ectodermal dysplasia, and clefting (EEC). A report of five patients.

Five new casses of ectrodactyly are described. Two patients have the syndrome of ectrodactyly, extodermal dysplasia, and clefting (EEC). In one patient with the EEC syndrome, the disorder seems to represent a new mutation. One woman with isolated ectrodactyly has a daughter with the EEC syndrome. The variation in the clinical expression of this disorder among affected members of the same family makes it difficult to determine whether there may be several mutant alleles responsible for ectrodactyly and its related manifestations.

High prevalence of metabolic syndrome and of insulin resistance in psoriatic arthritis is associated with the severity of underlying disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and of insulin resistance (IR) in an ethnically homogeneous cohort of established psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and to identify clinical associations of MetS and IR in patients with PsA. METHODS: A cohort of 283 patients with PsA all meeting ClASsification for Psoriatic ARthritis (CASPAR) criteria was included. All underwent detailed skin and rheumatologic assessments, along with cardiovascular risk factor evaluation. IR was defined as an elevated homeostasis model assessment (HOMA-IR) value of > 2.5. Severe PsA was defined as

Long-term donor site morbidity after free nonvascularized toe phalangeal transfer.

PURPOSE: Free nonvascularized toe phalangeal transfer is an established surgical option for the reconstruction of hypoplastic digits. This study assessed long-term morbidity in the feet using this technique. METHODS: We reviewed 40 children treated between 1991 and 2007 by free nonvascularized toe phalangeal transfer. The diagnosis was digital hypoplasia resulting from symbrachydactyly in 33 cases, constriction ring syndrome in 3 cases, thumb hypoplasia in 3 cases, and perinatal subclavian venous thrombosis in 1 case. The patients were followed up after surgery for a mean of 10 years (range,

A new syndrome of microtia with mixed type hearing loss, renal agenesis, and multiple skeletal anomalies.

We report on a 17-year-old man who presented with unreported combination of right sided microtia and preauricular skin tag with conductive hearing loss, unilateral renal agenesis, partial syndactyly of forth and fifth metacarpals, multiple tarsal coalitions, absent toe, and hypoplastic tibia and fibula. Radiological and clinical findings did not match with the previously described syndromes with the type of anomalies seen in the case. We propose that this represents a new syndrome.

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome (with a posterior midline unsegmented bar).

Spondylocarpotarsal synostosis syndrome (SSS) is characterised by malsegmentation of the thoracic spine and carpal/tarsal fusions. A unilateral or bilateral unsegmented bar may be present in the thoracic spine. Presenting clinical signs are congenital scoliosis early in life, and shortening of the trunk with scoliosis and/or lordosis in older children. We report a 13-year-old girl with SSS and a midline unsegmented bar running along the spinal processes of T3 to L2 and extending into the posterior vertebral elements.

Clofarabine-induced acral erythema during the treatment of patients with myelodysplasia and acute leukemia: report of two cases.

Acral erythema has been associated with a number of chemotherapeutic agents, but there are no reports of clofarabine-induced acral erythema in the literature. We describe two patients who developed acral erythema after receiving clofarabine. One patient had myelodysplastic syndrome while the other had acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

[Hearing loss in Townes-Brocks syndrome].

In nineteen seventy two Towns and Brocks reported on a family in which the father and seven children showed anal atresia, triphalangeal thumb, metatarsal synostosis, extra fingers, neurosensorial deafness and ear abnormalities. The main traits were those related to hand, ear and anus alterations, transmitted under a dominant autosomal pattern. In this paper we present several members of the same family with similar alterations who finally were diagnosed of Townes-Brocks syndrome.

Multiple intestinal stenoses and peripheral gangrene: a combination of two rare surgical complications in a child with Kawasaki disease.

Kawasaki disease (KD) often presents with a challenging variety of clinical symptoms. Severe gastrointestinal complications are rare and mainly appear as pseudo-obstruction. However, the authors report the unique case of a 4-month-old girl with KD suffering from a mechanical ileus. The optimal timing of surgery presented a dilemma, because she received lytic treatment for gangrenes of both her hands and feet and additionally had large coronary artery aneurysms. Finally laparotomy had to be performed while the patient was on an anticoagulant medication, and it showed a 30-cm-long jejunal segmen

Prenatal diagnosis of hypoparathyroidism retardation and dysmorphism (HRD) syndrome.

We used linkage analysis for prenatal diagnosis of the recently reported hypoparathyroidism, retardation, and dysmorphism (HRD) syndrome. Five cases from four families were evaluated. Three fetuses were carriers and were born healthy. Two fetuses were affected but the parents decided not to terminate the pregnancies. The diagnosis of HRD syndrome was confirmed in these newborns. This is the first report about prenatal diagnosis of HRD syndrome.

Postaxial polydactyly, ulnar ray dysgenesis, and renal cystic dysplasia in sibs.

We describe two brothers with variable expression of a unique syndrome. One sib has postaxial polydactyly of the right hand and feet, two digits on the left hand (a thumb and first digit), bilateral ulnar ray dysgenesis, ectrodactyly of one hand, and ultrasonic evidence of cystic kidneys. His brother has postaxial polydactyly and small kidneys. The parents and a third sib are normal. They do not have the Pallister ulnar-mammary syndrome but may have an unusual form of the Weyers oligodactyly syndrome. This appears to be the first report of an acro-renal syndrome with ulnar dysgenesis, oligodac

Anophthalmia-Waardenburg syndrome: a report of three cases.

We report on 2 Turkish families with children who had bilateral anophthalmia, upper and lower limb abnormalities, mental retardation and consanguineous parents. We have evaluated the 2 cases in the first family and the only case in the second as anophthalmia-Waardenburg syndrome. This is an extremely rare autosomal recessive syndrome.
