ACUTE FROSTED RETINAL PERIPHLEBITIS IN A PATIENT WITH MEDITERRANEAN FEVER.

PURPOSE: To present a case of frosted branch periphlebitis in a young Armenian patient with familial Mediterranean fever. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 37-year-old man presented with a unilateral decreased visual acuity and floaters for 4 days on the left eye (LE). Visual acuity was 20/20 in the right eye (RE) and 20/28 in the LE. Anterior segment and fundus examinations of the RE were normal. Slit-lamp examination of LE revealed a mild nongranulomatous anterior uveitis and vitritis. Intraocular pressure was 19 mmHg in the RE and 12 mmHg in the LE. Fundoscopy of the LE showed typical appe…

Are tumefactive lesions classified as sclerosing mesenteritis a subset of IgG4-related sclerosing disorders?

BACKGROUND: The relationship between tumefactive lesions classified as sclerosing mesenteritis and IgG4-related sclerosing disorders (eg, ly … marginated fibroinflammatory processes with variable amounts of fat necrosis. Lymphocytic venulitis/phlebitis was identified in 8 of 9 cases. IgG and IgG4 expression in lesional plasma cells was assessed by immunohistochemistry. IgG4-positive plasma cells were counted in the areas of greatest density in >or=3 high power fields (HPFs). The highest number per …

Chronic intestinal lymphocytic microphlebitis.

The authors report two cases of a peculiar microphlebitis of the intestines, similar to that described by Saraga and Costa quite recently [5]. The patients had undergone hemicolectomy because of evolving ileus caused by cecal polyps or lipohyperplasia, respectively. Pseudomembranous-ulcerative inflammation of the cecum and variously intense lymphocytic infiltrates of numerous small submucosal veins and venules of the intestines were found in both cases. Thrombosis occurred very rarely in the affected vessels, although sometimes it was found in deeper and larger veins. Arteries, lymphatics, mes…

Retinal periphlebitis as the initial clinical finding in a patient with Hodgkin's disease.

A 28-year-old woman noted decreased vision in one eye and was found to have bilateral optic disc swelling, periphlebitis, focal chorioretinitis, and vitritis. Subsequent lymph node biopsy revealed nodular sclerosing. Hodgkin's disease, stage II-A. The ocular manifestations of the disease resolved in response to systemic radiation therapy. The relationship of the ophthalmic findings to the systemic disease are discussed.

Effectiveness of intravenous infusion protocol in improving quality of care and reducing complications among hospitalized patients.

OBJECTIVE: Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a structured intravenous infusion protocol in improving the quality of car … ted complications have decreased in the study group following the intervention (posttest) including phlebitis, infiltration and infection. Although these reductions were not significant, a high significant improvement was observed in pain incidence, which dropped from 25% to 2.8% (p<0.01). CONCLUSION: Conclusions: the structured intravenous infusion protoc …

Concurrent uveitis in monozygotic twins in the context of systemic sarcoidosis.

PURPOSE: To report a case of two monozygotic twins presenting with simultaneous onset of bilateral uveitis of variable phenotypic presentati … mination and work-up revealed that Twin A had bilateral anterior granulomatous uveitis, and retinal phlebitis in addition to hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. A biopsy was taken, and histopathological examination showed non-caseating granuloma. Twin B had bilateral non-granulomatous anterior uveitis, chorioretinal lesions, and peripheral retinal vascul …

Safety of totally implantable venous access devices and peripherally inserted central catheters in hematological malignancies patients: a meta-analysis.

BackgroundThe use of totally implantable venous access devices (TIVADs) and peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) are the two opti … risks of infection (OR: 0.21, 95% CI: 0.11-0.40), catheter occlusion (OR: 0.31, 95% CI: 0.13-0.77), phlebitis (OR: 0.16, 95% CI: 0.06-0.42), and catheter dislodgement (OR: 0.25, 95% CI: 0.08-0.76) compared to PICCs. However, there was no significant difference between the two devices in terms of thrombosis risk (OR: 0.37, 95% CI: 0.10-1.41).ConclusionThis m …

Perineural Spread of Orbital Immunoglobulin G4-Related Disease: A Case Report.

Immunoglobulin G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a rare, immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition that can affect multiple organs. It is characterized by elevated serum IgG4 levels, lymphoplasmacytic infiltration, storiform fibrosis, and obliterative phlebitis. Diagnosis can be challenging due to limited awareness amongst clinicians and its wide range of clinical manifestations. We present a case of an elderly woman with bilateral orbital IgG4-RD and perineural spread, a rare manifestation of the disease. Serological testing showed markedly elevated IgG4 levels, and imaging revealed bilateral…

Multicenter, single-blind, randomized controlled study of the efficacy and safety of favipiravir and nafamostat mesilate in patients with COVID-19 pneumonia.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of nafamostat combined with favipiravir for the treatment of COVID-19. METHODS: We conducte … -squares mean difference, 1.831; P = 0.022). No serious adverse events or deaths were reported, but phlebitis occurred in 57.1% of the patients in the combination group. CONCLUSION: Although our study showed no differences in clinical progression, earlier defervescence, and recovery of SpO2 were observed in the combination group.

Brain targeted intra nasal acyclovir lipid nanoparticles; in-vitro characterization and in-vivo biodistribution studies.

Acyclovir (ACY) is an antiviral class of drugs used to treat herpes simplex virus infections such as herpes simplex encephalitis (HSE). ACY is widely distributed; Systemic exposure of ACY leads to serious adverse effects. Because of its high pH, intravenous ACY may cause phlebitis and local inflammation if extravasation occurs. This study aims to enhance acyclovir delivery to the brain via the intranasal route by formulating ACY nano lipid carriers (ACY-NLCs) to circumvent the side-effects, as mentioned earlier. ACY-NLCs were prepared by emulsification, followed by ultrasonication. A Box-Behnk…

From little things, big things grow: An exploratory analysis of the national cost of peripheral intravenous catheter insertion in Australian adult emergency care.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the total economic impact of peripheral intravenous catheter (PIVC) or cannula insertion and use in adult Australian … nsertion (equipment and staff), cost of complications such as Staphylococcus aureus bacteraemia and phlebitis, and patient-centred costs (lost patient productivity, infiltration, occlusion and dislodgement). Approximately A$305.9 million is attributed to unused cannulas and approximately 11 790 days of clinician time is spent annually inserting cannula that …

Pneumothorax as a rare complication of peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) in neonates: A case report study.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: The Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter (PICC) placement is associated with complications such as deep vein thrombosis, phlebitis, air embolism, infection, and superior vena cava syndrome. The aim of this study is to report pneumothorax as a rare complication of PICC insertion in a newborn. CASE PRESENTATION: The present case report is of a 32-week- and 4-day-old female fetus who was born at Mahzad Obstetrics and Gynecology Hospital, Urmia, Iran. A PICC was placed for the infant. The infant underwent an antero-posterior chest X-ray, in which the presence of a c…
