The effect of three different angles of the working seat on lumbar spine curvatures and comfort: An observational study.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to verify the influence of three different seat inclinations for work as measured by comfort and changes in vertebral curvatures for the position of work. METHODS: The kinematic analysis was recorded at the vertebral levels of T5, T10, L3 and S2 to measure the lumbar and thoracic-lumbar angles. The seat allowed adjustments of the angles (0o, 15o and 30o) and the Likert scale was used to assess the subjects' level of comfort. Each data collection session was performed in a 60-min period. The statistical analysis compared groups through multivariate anal

Augmented Reality Versus Freehand Spinopelvic Fixation in Spinal Deformity: A Case-Control Study.

PURPOSE: This study sought to compare screw placement accuracy and outcomes between freehand (FH) and AR-guided pelvic fixation. While pelvic fixation is a critical technique in spinal deformity surgery, S2-alar iliac (S2AI) screw placement poses challenges. METHODS: We conducted a case-control study of 50 consecutive patients who underwent spinopelvic fixation at a single institution. AR guidance was performed using a head-mounted display (Xvision, Augmedics). Patient demographics, surgical characteristics, spinopelvic parameters, and screw breach grade were compared using univariate and mul

Head and pelvis are the key segments recruited by adult spinal deformity patients during daily life activities.

Functional assessment is a key element in evaluating adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients. The multitude of 3D kinematic parameters provided by movement analysis can be confusing for spine surgeons. The aim was to investigate movement patterns of ASD based on key kinematic parameters. 115 primary ASD and 36 controls underwent biplanar radiographs and 3D movement analysis during walking, sit-to-stand and stair ascent to calculate joint and segment kinematics. Principal component analysis was applied to identify the most relevant kinematic parameters that define movement strategies adopted by A

Correlation of Body Mass Index with Pelvis and Lumbar Spine Alignment in Sagittal Plane in Hemophilia Patients.

Introduction: Concern about weight gain among people has been high due to negative health consequences in addition to the increasing prevalence of the problem. Overweight and obesity also occur in patients with hemophilia. Analysis of literature shows that increased body weight might have a biomechanical effect on the spatial orientation of the pelvis and the lumbar spine. The aim of this study was to determine the correlation between body mass index (BMI) and the parameters characterizing the alignment of the sacrum (SS, sacral slope), the pelvis (PT, pelvic tilt; PI, pelvic incidence) and th

Interpretation of Spinal Radiographic Parameters in Patients With Transitional Lumbosacral Vertebrae.

STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective radiographic review. OBJECTIVES: To understand the effect of variability in sacral endplate selection in transitional lumbosacral vertebrae (TLSV) and its impact on pelvic, regional, and global spinal alignment parameters. BACKGROUND: TLSV can have the characteristics of both lumbar and sacral vertebrae. Difficulties in identification of the S1 endplate may come from nomenclature, number of lumbar vertebrae, sacra, and morphology and may influence the interpretation and consistency of spinal alignment parameters. METHODS: Patients with TLSV were identified and ra

Intra and interrater reliability of spinal sagittal curves and mobility using pocket goniometer IncliMed® in healthy subjects.

BACKGROUND: Radiographic examination is the gold standard to evaluate spine curves, but ionising radiations limit routine use. Non-invasive methods, such as skin-surface goniometer (IncliMed®) should be used instead. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate intra- and interrater reliability to assess sagittal curves and mobility of the spine with IncliMed®. METHODS: a reliability study on agonistic football players. Thoracic kyphosis, lumbar lordosis and mobility of the spine were assessed by IncliMed®. Measurements were repeated twice by each examiner during the same session with between-rater blinding. Intr

Tennis is not dangerous for the spine during growth: results of a cross-sectional study.

PURPOSE: Tennis is widely practiced by adolescents in many countries. Many spinal deformity experts consider this activity, together with other asymmetrical sports, as risk factors for scoliosis development even though scientific data are missing. The aim of the present study was to verify the prevalence of spinal deformities and LBP in adolescent competitive tennis players compared to healthy controls. METHODS: We designed a cross-sectional study. A convenience sample of 102 adolescent tennis players (52 girls) was compared to 203 scholars (102 girls) of the same age (12 years). We used a qu

Associated disorders of Chiari Type I malformations: a review.

A single pathophysiological mechanism of Chiari Type I malformations (CM-I) has been a topic of debate. To help better understand CM-I, the authors review disorders known to be associated with CM-I. The primary methodology found among most of them is deformation of the posterior cranial fossa, usually with subsequent decrease in volume. Other mechanisms exist as well, which can be categorized as either congenital or acquired. In understanding the relationship of such disorders with CM-I, we may gain further insight into the process by which cerebellar tonsillar herniation occurs. Some of these

Comparison of the kyphosis angle evaluated by video rasterstereography (VRS) with x-ray measurements.

UNLABELLED: Surface topography evaluations are prone to technical errors due to postural sway of the patients measured. The technical error of lateral deviation (rms) and surface rotation (rms) may vary between 15 and 20%, while the kyphosis angle (IP-ITL) has a technical error of only 5% (2,5 degrees), which is comparable to the x-ray measurement. Purpose of this study was to investigate the hypothesis that video rasterstereography can be used for prognostication of a kyphosis patient.
