Association of Natural Disasters on Trends of County-Level Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) Screening.

OBJECTIVE: Natural disasters may worsen cancer outcomes through treatment delays, screening interruptions, or fragmented health care delivery. We investigated whether climate-related natural disasters were associated with changes in county-level prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screening. METHODS: We modeled county-level screening estimates from the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) from 2004 to 2012 using Census-derived demographic weights. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)'s Disaster Declarations Summaries database was used to include counties that experienced a

Topography Dependence of Terrestrial Litter-Derived Soil Respiration.

Carbon (C) released from decomposing plant litter constitutes a major component of soil CO2 efflux at the land surface, yet its contribution is rarely constrained separately from heterotrophic respiration of stable soil organic matter in global C budgets and Earth system model evaluations. We combined a global dataset with high-resolution field observations to quantify the contribution of litter-derived soil respiration (Rs) using litter-input and litter-removal experiments, and to project its current distribution and future dynamics with machine-learning models. On average, litter-derived Rs

Ambient temperature and solar insolation are associated with decreased prevalence of SSRI-treated psychiatric disorders.

Serotonergic function is known to fluctuate in association with light and temperature. Serotonin-related behaviors and disorders similarly vary with climatic exposure, but the associations are complex. This complexity may reflect the importance of dose and timing of exposure, as well as acclimation. This cross-sectional study tests how average climate exposures (ambient temperature and solar insolation) vary with the prevalence of a group of SSRI-treated disorders. For comparison, we similarly studied a group of disorders not treated by SSRIs (i.e substance use disorders). Psychiatric prevalen

Extreme hydrological events shape temporal dynamics of schistosomiasis in the Amazon.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease whose transmission is strongly influenced by environmental and hydrological conditions. In tropical regions, increasing climate variability and the intensification of extreme events raise important questions regarding how long-term climatic conditions and hydrological disturbances shape disease dynamics. This study investigated the temporal association between schistosomiasis incidence, mean annual temperature, accumulated annual precipitation, and flooding occurrence over a 25-year time series (2000-2024) in an Amazonian municipality. Annual con

Psychometric Properties and Network Structure of the Domain-Specific Climate Change Distress Scale.

BACKGROUND: Climate change increasingly poses a threat to psychological health. The Domain-Specific Climate Change Distress Scale (DCCDS) was developed to capture climate-related distress across six thematic (ecology, existence, food supply, future generations, society, and wealth) and one generic domain. Building on its theoretical foundation, the present study extends initial validation efforts by providing large-scale psychometric data and normative values, drawing on a large, diverse sample to further substantiate the scale's psychometric properties and practical utility. METHODS: We pool

Seasonality of cholera in Kolkata and the influence of climate.

BACKGROUND: Cholera in Kolkata remains endemic and the Indian city is burdened with a high number of annual cases. Climate change is widely considered to exacerbate cholera, however the precise relationship between climate and cholera is highly heterogeneous in space and considerable variation can be observed even within the Indian subcontinent. To date, relatively few studies have been conducted regarding the influence of climate on cholera in Kolkata. METHODS: We considered 21 years of confirmed cholera cases from the Infectious Disease Hospital in Kolkata during the period of 1999-2019. We

Climate-driven malaria mortality among children in malaria-endemic areas of Uganda.

Malaria is a major disease in Africa and is among the leading causes of mortality among children. The disease is highly sensitive to climate change. Prior studies have established a link between climatic factors and malaria mortality, but the evidence specifically related to children in sub-Saharan Africa remains inconsistent and requires further investigation. This study examined the impact of climate variables on malaria mortality in the Iganga and Mayuge districts, a malaria-prone area in Uganda. We used weekly malaria mortality data from a population-based cohort in the Iganga Mayuge Healt

Seasonal changes in climatic parameters and their relationship with the incidence of pneumococcal bacteraemia in Denmark.

The seasonal variation in the incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease is well recognized, but little is known about its relationship with actual changes in climatic parameters. In this 8-year longitudinal population-based study in Denmark, a harmonic sinusoidal regression model was used to examine whether preceding changes in climatic parameters corresponded with subsequent variations in the incidence of pneumococcal bacteraemia, independently of seasonal variation. The study shows that changes in temperature can be used to closely predict peaks in the incidence of pneumococcal bacteraemia

Climate-induced expansion of Lyme disease in east central Ohio.

The geographical distribution of Lyme disease has been attributed to changes in Earth's climate and associated distribution of its vector, ticks of the genus Ixodes. This study focuses on the impact of climatic and meteorological conditions on Lyme disease transmission in East Central Ohio, an emerging hotspot of cases. Using county-level data from 2001 to 2023, we analyzed the relationship between Lyme disease cases and temperature, precipitation, and the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) using a distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM). Results show that warmer winter temperatures, higher preci

The effect of climate change on yellow fever disease burden in Africa.

Yellow Fever (YF) is an arbovirus endemic in tropical regions of South America and Africa and it is estimated to cause 78,000 deaths a year in Africa alone. Climate change may have substantial effects on the transmission of YF and we present the first analysis of the potential impact on disease burden. We extend an existing model of YF transmission to account for rainfall and a temperature suitability index and project transmission intensity across the African endemic region in the context of four climate change scenarios. We use these transmission projections to assess the change in burden in

Climate factors influencing coccidioidomycosis seasonality and outbreaks.

Although broad links between climatic factors and coccidioidomycosis have been established, the identification of simple and robust relationships linking climatic controls to seasonal timing and outbreaks of the disease has remained elusive. Using an adaptive data-oriented method for estimating date of exposure, in this article I analyze hypotheses linking climate and dust to fungal growth and dispersion, and evaluate their respective roles for Pima County, Arizona. Results confirm a strong bimodal disease seasonality that was suspected but not previously seen in reported data. Dispersion-rela

Agent-Based Modeling Approach for Population Dynamics of the Biological Vector Aedes Aegypti.

BACKGROUND: The invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti is a major vector of arboviruses, such as Dengue, Zika, Chikungunya and Yellow Fever. OBJECTIVE: As a first step toward a transmission model for vector-borne diseases, a weather-dependent population dynamic simulation for Ae. aegypti was developed, suitable for high weather short-term variability in the Austrian region. METHODS: We developed an agent-based model, incorporating temperature- and precipitation-dependent development, mortality, movement, feeding behavior, and egg-laying. Species-specific parameters were derived from published exper

Assessing the Relationship between Climate Variables and Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome Transmission in Eastern China: A Multi-Cities Time Series Study.

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a climate-sensitive infectious disease. The effect of climatic drivers might predict and prevent HFRS, and understanding their relationship is urgently needed in the face of climate change. This study aimed to investigate the effect of meteorological factors on HFRS incidence. The random forest regression model, generalized additive model, and distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) were constructed to predict the importance, nonlinear trend and interaction effect, and exposure-lag effect of meteorological factors on HFRS incidence based on the da
