Exploration of Scaffolds from Natural Products with Antiplasmodial Activities, Currently Registered Antimalarial Drugs and Public Malarial Screen Data.

In light of current resistance to antimalarial drugs, there is a need to discover new classes of antimalarial agents with unique mechanisms of action. Identification of unique scaffolds from natural products with in vitro antiplasmodial activities may be the starting point for such new classes of antimalarial agents. We therefore conducted scaffold diversity and comparison analysis of natural products with in vitro antiplasmodial activities (NAA), currently registered antimalarial drugs (CRAD) and malaria screen data from Medicine for Malaria Ventures (MMV). The scaffold diversity analyses on

Environmental Social Stress, Paranoia and Psychosis Liability: A Virtual Reality Study.

The impact of social environments on mental states is difficult to assess, limiting the understanding of which aspects of the social environment contribute to the onset of psychotic symptoms and how individual characteristics moderate this outcome. This study aimed to test sensitivity to environmental social stress as a mechanism of psychosis using Virtual Reality (VR) experiments. Fifty-five patients with recent onset psychotic disorder, 20 patients at ultra high risk for psychosis, 42 siblings of patients with psychosis, and 53 controls walked 5 times in a virtual bar with different levels o

Body-machine interface for control of a screen cursor for a child with congenital absence of upper and lower limbs: a case report.

BACKGROUND: There has been a recent interest in the development of body-machine interfaces which allow individuals with motor impairments to control assistive devices using body movements. METHODS: In this case study, we report findings in the context of the development of such an interface for a 10-year old child with congenital absence of upper and lower limbs. The interface consisted of 4 wireless inertial measurement units (IMUs), which we used to map movements of the upper body to the position of a cursor on a screen. We examined the learning of a task in which the child had to move the

Use of ligand-based pharmacophore modeling and docking approach to find novel acetylcholinesterase inhibitors for treating Alzheimer's.

Alzheimer's disease is a neurological disorder in which the patient suffers from memory loss and impaired cognitive abilities. Though the main cause of the disease is not yet known, depletion of neurotransmitter at synaptic junctions, accumulation of insoluble beta amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles are the main pathologies associated with it. The FDA approved drugs for alzheimer's belong to the category of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors. But most of the drugs have been observed to be associated with adverse side effects. In this study, we have developed a pharmacophore (responsible

Visual landmarks facilitate rodent spatial navigation in virtual reality environments.

Because many different sensory modalities contribute to spatial learning in rodents, it has been difficult to determine whether spatial navigation can be guided solely by visual cues. Rodents moving within physical environments with visual cues engage a variety of nonvisual sensory systems that cannot be easily inhibited without lesioning brain areas. Virtual reality offers a unique approach to ask whether visual landmark cues alone are sufficient to improve performance in a spatial task. We found that mice could learn to navigate between two water reward locations along a virtual bidirectiona

An immersive virtual peer for studying social influences on child cyclists' road-crossing behavior.

The goal of our work is to develop a programmatically controlled peer to bicycle with a human subject for the purpose of studying how social interactions influence road-crossing behavior. The peer is controlled through a combination of reactive controllers that determine the gross motion of the virtual bicycle, action-based controllers that animate the virtual bicyclist and generate verbal behaviors, and a keyboard interface that allows an experimenter to initiate the virtual bicyclist's actions during the course of an experiment. The virtual bicyclist's repertoire of behaviors includes road f

A systematic review and meta-analysis of quantitative interviewing tools to investigate self-reported HIV and STI associated behaviours in low- and middle-income countries.

OBJECTIVE: Studies identifying risks and evaluating interventions for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other sexually transmitted infections often rely on self-reported measures of sensitive behaviours. Such self-reports can be subject to social desirability bias. Concerns over the accuracy of these measures have prompted efforts to improve the level of privacy and anonymity of the interview setting. This study aims to determine whether such novel tools minimize misreporting of sensitive information. METHODS: Systematic review and meta-analysis of studies in low- and middle-income count

Identifying the control of physically and perceptually evoked sway responses with coincident visual scene velocities and tilt of the base of support.

In this study, we have explored whether the impact of visual information on postural reactions is due to the same perceptual mechanisms that produce vection. Pitch motion of the visual field was presented at varying velocities to eight healthy subjects (29.9+/-2.8 years) standing quietly on a stationary base of support or receiving a 3 degrees toes-up tilt of the base of support. An infrared motion system recorded markers placed on body segments to record angular displacement of head and ankle and calculate whole body center of mass. Onset of the visual field motion and base of support movemen

The effect of sexual priming cues on emotional recognition in nonviolent child sexual abusers: a preliminary study.

This article describes a study that used a computer-based task to investigate the emotional recognition skills of child sexual abusers. The experiment consisted of two phases (prime and probe) and measured both response time and error rates to facial expressions. The priming phase of the experiment consisted of the presentation of short phrases via computer of either sexual or neutral content. The probe phase of the experiment consisted of the presentation of adult facial expressions depicting either the emotion fear or surprise. Results showed child sexual abusers to be slightly less accurate

Affective outcomes of virtual reality exposure therapy for anxiety and specific phobias: a meta-analysis.

Virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) is an increasingly common treatment for anxiety and specific phobias. Lacking is a quantitative meta-analysis that enhances understanding of the variability and clinical significance of anxiety reduction outcomes after VRET. Searches of electronic databases yielded 52 studies, and of these, 21 studies (300 subjects) met inclusion criteria. Although meta-analysis revealed large declines in anxiety symptoms following VRET, moderator analyses were limited due to inconsistent reporting in the VRET literature. This highlights the need for future research stud

Problematic internet experiences: primary or secondary presenting problems in persons seeking mental health care?

This study utilizes data from clinical reports of 1441 youth and adults in the USA to examine the types of problematic Internet experiences mental health professionals report as clients' primary or secondary presenting problems. Overall, clients who present in treatment with an Internet problem are more likely to have problems related to overuse of the Internet; use of adult pornography; use of child pornography; sexual exploitation perpetration; and gaming, gambling, or role-playing. Other Internet-related problems, such as isolative-avoidant use, sexual exploitation victimization, harassment

Respiratory responses associated with affective processing of film stimuli.

We investigated respiratory responses during film clip viewing and their relation to the affective dimensions of valence and arousal. Seventy-six subjects participated in a study using a between groups design. To begin with, all participants viewed an emotionally neutral film clip. Then, they were presented with one out of four emotional film clips: a positive high-arousal, a positive low-arousal, a negative high-arousal and a negative low-arousal clip. Respiration, skin conductance level, heart rate, corrugator activity and affective judgments were measured. Expiratory time was shorter and in
