Synthetic Analogue of Butenolide as an Antifouling Agent.

Butenolide derivatives have the potential to be effective and environmentally friendly antifouling agents. In the present study, a butenolide derivative was structurally modified into Boc-butenolide to increase its melting point and remove its foul smell. The structurally modified Boc-butenolide demonstrated similar antifouling capabilities to butenolide in larval settlement bioassays but with significantly lower toxicity at high concentrations. Release-rate measurements demonstrated that the antifouling compound Boc-butenolide could be released from polycaprolactone-polyurethane (PCL-PU)-base

Direct Enantioselective Vinylogous Mannich Reaction of Ketimines with γ-Butenolide by Using Cinchona Alkaloid Amide/Zinc(II) Catalysts.

A direct enantioselective vinylogous Mannich reaction of ketimines with γ-butenolide has been developed. Good yields and enantioselectivities were observed for the reaction of various ketimines by using a cinchona alkaloid amide/Zn(OTf)2 catalyst and Et3N. Both enantiomers of the products could be obtained by using pseudoenantiomeric chiral catalysts.

The butenolide signaling molecules SRB1 and SRB2 induce lankacidin and lankamycin production in Streptomyces rochei.

New signaling molecules that induce lankacidin and lankamycin production in Streptomyces rochei were extracted from the culture filtrate and purified by Sephadex LH20 and silica gel chromatography with the help of bioassay. Chiral HPLC and ESI-MS analyses indicated the presence of two active components--SRB1 and SRB2--and their molecular formulas were established to be C15H24O5 and C16H26O5, respectively. By extensive NMR analysis, SRB1 and SRB2 were determined to be 2-(1'-hydroxy-6'-oxo-8'-methylnonyl)-3-methyl-4-hydroxybut-2-en-1,4-olide and 2-(1'-hydroxy-6'-oxo-8'-methyldecyl)-3-methyl-4-hy

Direct catalytic asymmetric Mannich-type reactions of gamma-butenolides: effectiveness of Brønsted acid in chiral metal catalysis.

Direct catalytic asymmetric Mannich-type reactions of gamma-butenolides are described. A chiral Lewis acid/amine base/Brønsted acid combination was used to catalyze a gamma-addition of gamma-butenolides to N-diphenylphosphinoyl imines, affording the products in up to >99% yield, anti/syn = >97:3, and 84% ee. The use of a catalytic amount of TfOH in addition to La(OTf)3/Me-PyBox/TMEDA was important for improving yield and stereoselectivity.

Repeated administration of a Fusarium mycotoxin butenolide to rats induces hepatic lipid peroxidation and antioxidant defense impairment.

Butenolide, a mycotoxin elaborated by several toxigenic Fusarium species, frequently contaminates important agricultural products, and has been considered a potential health risk to humans and animals. However, many toxicology issues including toxicity targets and mechanisms of butenolide remain unclear. Previous study indicated that acute butenolide exposure produced hepatic oxidative toxicity, but its chronic toxicity is still unknown. The present study therefore attempted to reveal the adverse effects of repeated butenolide exposure from a viewpoint of oxidative damage focusing on the liver

Divergent synthetic strategy leading to structurally diverse pyrrolidines and piperidines from common gamma-aminoalkyl butenolide and aldehyde precursors.

Condensation between aldehydes and the secondary amino function of 5-(aminoalkyl)furan-2(5H)-ones, obtained by the silyloxyfuran dienolate addition to imine-type derivatives, produces either aminoalkylbenzotriazoles or 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyridines. The former can be reduced with SmI2 to generate alpha-aminoalkyl radicals that are trapped by the alpha,beta-unsaturated lactone moiety yielding substituted pyrrolidines diastereoselectively, while catalytic hydrogenation of the latter affords isomeric piperidine analogues. Alternatively, SmI2-promoted reduction of tetrahydropyridines in the presence

The Maculalactone Biosynthetic Gene Cluster, a Cryptic Furanolide Pathway Revealed in Nodularia sp. NIES-3585.

Cyanobacteria have long been recognized as a prolific source of bioactive natural products (NPs). Among these are the furanolides, a structurally diverse class of compounds first discovered in the 1980s. Furanolides are characterized by a γ-butyrolactone core bearing aromatic or aliphatic substituents at the α- and β-positions and an aromatic substituent at the γ-position. Recent advances in understanding the genetic basis of furanolide biosynthesis have enabled genome mining approaches to discover related cryptic furanolide biosynthetic gene clusters (BGCs). In this work, we identified and cl

Harzianolides B-G: Undescribed Butenolides isolated from the fungus Trichoderma harzianum ZN-4.

Five undescribed γ-butyrolactones harzianolides BF (1-5), one precursor harzianolide G (6) along with two known analogues, were isolated and identified from the EtOAc extract of the liquid fermentation of Trichoderma harzianum ZN-4, which was obtained from the sediment of Zhoushan coastal area. Notably, compound 1 featured an unusual carbon skeleton with methylene-bridged furan rings system. Their structures were determined by detailed interpretation of NMR and mass spectroscopic data, and the absolute configurations were unambiguously established based on ECD quantum chemical calculations. Synergistic toxic effects of high-strength ammonia and ZnO nanoparticles on biological nitrogen removal systems and role of exogenous C10-HSL regulation.

The inhibitory effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) and impacts of N-acyl-homoserine lactone (AHL)-based quorum sensing (QS) on biological nitrogen removal (BNR) performance have been well-investigated. However, the effects of ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) concentrations on NP toxicity and AHL regulation have seldom been addressed yet. This study consulted on the impacts of ZnO NPs on BNR systems when high NH4+-N concentration was available. The synergistic toxic effects of high-strength NH4+-N (200 mg/L) and ZnO NPs resulted in decreased ammonia oxidation rates and dropped the nitrogen r

Single and combined exposure to 'bee safe' pesticides alter behaviour and offspring production in a ground-nesting solitary bee (Xenoglossa pruinosa).

Mounting evidence supporting the negative impacts of exposure to neonicotinoids on bees has prompted the registration of novel 'bee-friendly' insecticides for agricultural use. Flupyradifurone (FPF) is a butenolide insecticide that shares the same mode of action as neonicotinoids and has been assessed to be 'practically non-toxic to adult honeybees' using current risk assessment procedures. However, these assessments overlook some routes of exposure specific to wild bees, such as contact with residues in soil for ground-nesters. Co-exposure with other pesticides may also lead to detrimental sy

Ligustilide prevents thymic immune senescence by regulating Thymosin β15-dependent spatial distribution of thymic epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Thymus is the most crucial organ connecting immunity and aging. The progressive senescence of thymic epithelial cells (TECs) leads to the involution of thymus under aging, chronic stress and other factors. Ligustilide (LIG) is a major active component of the anti-aging Chinese herbal medicine Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels, but its role in preventing TEC-based thymic aging remains elusive. PURPOSE: This study explored the protective role of Ligustilide in alleviating ADM (adriamycin) -induced thymic immune senescence and its underlying molecular mechanisms. METHOD: The protectiv

Effect of histidine covalent modification on strigolactone receptor activation and selectivity.

The parasitic weed Striga has led to billions of dollars' worth of agricultural productivity loss worldwide. Striga detects host plants using compounds of the strigolactone class of phytohormones. Early steps in the strigolactone signaling pathway involve substrate binding and hydrolysis followed by a conformational change to an "active" or "closed" state, after which it associates with a MAX2-family downstream signaling partner. The structures of the inactive and active states of strigolactone receptors are known through X-ray crystallography, and the transition pathway from the inactive to a

Two New Pairs of Enantiomeric Butenolides from the Marine Sponge Suberties sp.

Two new pairs of enantiomeric butenolides, (+)- and (-)-suberiteslide A, (+)- and (-)-subertieslide B had been obtained from the marine sponge Suberties sp. The structures with absolute configurations of these compounds were unequivocally determined by spectroscopic analyses and ECD (Electronic Circular Dichroism) method. It was the first separation of butenolides from the marine sponges of genus Suberites. Additionally, the anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and cytotoxic activities of these compounds were evaluated. The result indicated that only (-)-subertieslide B showed weak anti-inflammato

Physiological responses of plants and mites to salicylic acid improve the efficacy of spirodiclofen for controlling Tetranychus urticae (Acari: Tetranychidae) on greenhouse tomatoes.

Salicylic acid (SA) is a signaling molecule that can induce plant resistance to certain herbivores. Although the role of jasmonic acid in mediating mite-tomato plant interactions has been well studied, the role of salicylic acid has not. This study examined how the application of exogenous SA, via its effects on tomato plant physiology, alters the activity of mite digestive enzymes, mite energy reserves, and mite susceptibility to spirodiclofen. Enzymatic activity-including superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase-alon

Combining a bio-based polymer and a natural antifoulant into an eco-friendly antifouling coating.

Biodegradable polymers are promising binders and carriers for natural antifoulants. In the present study, an antifouling (AF) coating was developed by adding a non-toxic AF compound (butenolide) to a bio-based and biodegradable poly(lactic acid)-based polyurethane. Mass loss measurement showed that the polymer degraded in seawater at a rate of 0.013 mg cm-2 day-1. Measurements showed that butenolide was released from the coatings into seawater over a period of at least three months. Both the concentration of butenolide in the coatings and the ambient temperature determined the release rate of

A Synthetic Butenolide Diterpene is now a Natural Product Isolated from Metaporana sericosepala, a Plant from the Madagascar Dry Forest.

Antiproliferative bioassay-guided fractionation of the ethanolic extract of the endemic Madagascan plant Metaporana sericosepala led to the first natural product isolation of a butenolide diterpene, which was synthesized during an anti-inflammatory study in 1988. The structure of the compound was elucidated as 3-homofarnesyl-4-hydroxybutenolide (1) by analysis of its spectroscopic data, including 1D- and 2D-NMR data and chemical evidence. The once synthetic compound can now also be considered as a natural product. Compound 1 had modest antiproliferative activity towards the A2780 ovarian cance
