Between December 1985 and April 1990, 50 infants with a variety of congenital cardiac lesions other than the hypoplastic left heart syndrome underwent surgical relief of aortic outflow obstruction by creation of a pulmonary artery to aorta anastomosis. The patients were grouped anatomically by ventriculoarterial alignment. Nineteen had normally aligned great arteries (group I); 25 had transposition of the great arteries, all with a univentricular heart of left ventricular morphology (group II); and 6 had a double-outlet right ventricle (group III). All patients had either aortic stenosis with

BACKGROUND: Transcatheter septal ablation is a minimally invasive therapeutic method for treating symptomatic obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). The procedure is an alternative to septal myectomy, and it can be achieved using different modalities. Coronary artery congenital anomalies can coexist with HCM and can add complexity to its treatment.
CASE SUMMARY: A 65-year-old female presented with angina, reduced exercise tolerance, palpitations, and dizziness. Echocardiography showed eccentric left ventricular hypertrophy with basal septal thickness of 20 mm and left ventricular outf

BACKGROUND: Secondary hypertension is characterized by an elevated blood pressure greater than 140/90 mmHg, which occurs as a consequence of other diseases. The common etiologies of secondary hypertension include renal parenchymal causes, endocrine disorders, and vascular pathologies like coarctation of the aorta (CoA).
CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old patient was admitted to our hospital as he complained of headache and palpitations since one week. On examination, the blood pressure in his right upper limb was 180/100 mmHg. The volume of the femoral and the dorsalis pedis pulses was found to

We assessed the spectrum of airway disorders in children with congenital cardiac anomalies, and reviewed our experience in using flexible bronchoscopy for assessment of airway problems in this patient group. The clinical records, flexible bronchoscopic findings, and cardiac imaging results of pediatric cardiac patients who presented with either clinical or radiological signs of airway obstruction between 1992-1999 were reviewed. Flexible bronchoscopic assessment was performed with the patients under sedation and topical anesthesia, using one of two bronchoscopes, i.e., an Olympus BFN20 or Olym

BACKGROUND: Patients with dextro (D)-transposition of the great arteries (TGA) who have undergone a previous atrial switch and for some patients with levo (L)-TGA (ie, no ventricular septal defect or outflow tract obstruction), the left ventricle (LV) may require retraining before late arterial switch. The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of LV retraining for these two entities.
METHODS: This was a retrospective review of 51 patients enrolled in an LV retraining program. There were 25 patients with D-TGA and 26 with L-TGA. The median age of the D-TGA patients was 15 years, and

BACKGROUND: In repaired tetralogy of Fallot (rTOF), abnormal left ventricular (LV) rotational mechanics are associated with adverse clinical outcomes. We performed a comprehensive analysis of LV rotational mechanics in rTOF patients using cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) prior to and following surgical pulmonary valve replacement (PVR).
METHODS: In this single center retrospective study, we identified rTOF patients who (1) had both a CMR ≤ 1 year before PVR and ≤ 5 years after PVR, (2) had no other intervening procedure between CMRs, (3) had a body surface area > 1.0 m2 at CMR, and (4) had im

OBJECTIVE: Primary repair is the treatment of choice in patients with tetralogy of Fallot. The timing of repair, however, remains controversial, and an initial palliative procedure might be considered a valuable option in the early management of symptomatic young infants and in those with either unfavourable anatomy, major associated lesions or chromosomal abnormalities with a poor life expectancy.
METHODS: We reviewed the management of 100 consecutive patients with tetralogy of Fallot who were operated upon at our department during an 8-year period from June 1995 to March 2003. The rationale

BACKGROUND: Biventricular repair (BVR) can be achieved in aortic atresia with ventricular septal defect (VSD) by creating a double outlet left ventricle, Damus-Kaye-Stansel procedure and placement of a right ventricular-pulmonary artery conduit. This study is a review of 15 years experience with this "Damus-Rastelli" technique to assess clinical outcomes in comparison with a standard univentricular approach.
METHODS: A review of 16 patients with aortic atresia or complex left ventricular outflow tract obstruction who underwent BVR between 1990 and 2005; a comparison with outcomes for the Norw

AIMS: Defining the risk of atrial fibrillation (AF) in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) patients is an important clinical and prognostic challenge. The aim of this study is to determine HCM phenogroups with different risk of AF occurrence at 5 years.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We applied retrospectively the Bayesian method, which can analyze a large number of variables, to differentiate phenogroups of patients with different risks of AF and prognoses across a French prospective on-going hospital-based registry of adult HCM patients (REMY). Clinical and imaging data were prospectively recorded, and

The patient was an 80-year-old woman with chronic atrial fibrillation, chronic heart failure, cerebellar infarction, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension, who suddenly collapsed while playing gateball outdoors. The doctor at a nearby clinic doctor found her in a state of cardiopulmonary arrest and started basic life support. Twelve minutes after discovery, spontaneous circulation returned. On arrival, she was in a deep coma state with atrial fibrillation-related tachycardia. A physical examination revealed pulseless right radial and left popliteal arteries with cyanosis. BACKGROUND: Pulmonary regurgitation (PR) is a common complication of right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT) reconstruction and leads to right ventricular (RV) dilatation and dysfunction. Although cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the gold standard for evaluating PR and RV dysfunction, cost and limited availability are problems in many centres.
AIMS: To determine clinical, electrocardiographic and echocardiographic predictors of these complications and optimize patient selection for their short-term follow-up by CMR.
METHODS: Ninety-four patients with a history of RVOT repair were prospecti
