Management of serious complications in robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

BACKGROUND: Numerous studies have shown robotic-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (RATS) to be a safe alternative to video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, and its use has been widely adopted and continues to increase. However, there are a number of potential serious complications that necessitate conversion to thoracotomy. We reviewed our experience with the management and outcomes of such complications in a high-volume robotic center. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of all major robotic resections (single surgeon, single center) performed between May 2018 and June 2025. Serious com

Safety of Continuous Force Feedback in Robotic Hysterectomy and Myomectomy.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: United States labeling of the newest robotic surgical platform contraindicates the use of force feedback instruments during hysterectomy and myomectomy because of a theoretical, clinically unexamined bleeding risk. We describe real-world outcomes and quantified intraoperative force during continuous force feedback use throughout these procedures, including closure, in a setting where this restriction does not apply. METHODS: This single-surgeon observational cohort comprised 93 consecutive patients undergoing robotic hysterectomy or myomectomy between December 2024

Broad skill generalization with an extra robotic body part.

Our ability to transfer motor skills across tools and contexts is central to how we adapt to an increasingly technological world. From smartphones to wearable robotics, modern technologies demand flexible motor control that generalizes beyond specific learning contexts. Robotic limbs for body augmentation are designed to increase the body's degrees of freedom while coordinating with our biological limbs.1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8 While these devices perform well in controlled settings, their real-world effectiveness remains uncertain.9,10 This raises a fundamental question: can the brain form flexible mo…

Robotic versus Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy: Length of Stay and Readmission.

BACKGROUND: Laparoscopy has long been the standard minimally invasive approach for gallbladder removal. Proponents suggest robotic surgery may improve outcomes such as readmission rates and length of stay. METHODS: A systematic review of the literature was conducted using articles from PubMed, EBSCO: Medline, and Cochrane databases. Peer-reviewed studies published between January 2015 and November 10, 2025, were included if they directly compared robotic cholecystectomy (RC) and laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) outcomes in adult patients. RESULTS: Nineteen studies were included, consisting

Robotic-Assisted Latissimus Dorsi Transfers Around the Shoulder.

Robotic-assisted surgery has gained prominence in orthopedic practice due to its precision, enhanced visualization, and minimally invasive nature. While robotic applications for orthopedic surgery are well established in arthroplasties, their use in soft-tissue surgery remains limited. This study presents the indications, technique, and clinical outcomes of robotic-assisted latissimus dorsi tendon transfers for shoulder reconstruction. The robotic approach allows accurate identification of the axillary and radial nerves, minimal soft-tissue trauma, reduced bleeding, and excellent cosmetic outc

Why Do Robotic Total Knee Arthroplasties Fail?

BACKGROUND: Robotic platforms can provide increased information and accuracy to the procedure of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, it is unclear whether these advantages translate to decreased failures over time. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to describe aseptic failures following robotic TKA by examining (1) types of failure and (2) subsequent procedures/reoperations. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 2,648 robotic TKAs with a single robotic platform performed at our institution between January 1, 2016, and May 31, 2024. There were 1,303 men and 1,345 women who had a mean

Early experience with robotic splenectomy for massive and supramassive splenomegaly.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive splenectomy has been associated with improved perioperative outcomes compared with open splenectomy, but its application to massive and supramassive spleens has historically been limited. While laparoscopic splenectomy is feasible, the growing adoption of robotic-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy raises questions about its benefits. We hypothesized that robotic-assisted laparoscopic splenectomy would be feasible for massive and supramassive splenomegaly, superior to open splenectomy, and potentially advantageous over laparoscopic splenectomy. METHODS: A single-i

Robotic subtotal pancreatectomy for multifocal neuroendocrine tumour of the pancreas.

Pancreatic neuroendocrine tumours (pNETs) are rare and can be difficult to manage due to their variable presentations. Surgical resection remains the standard treatment for symptom control and reduced risk of recurrence. Minimally invasive robotic surgery has become an alternative to open approaches due to its enhanced three-dimensional visualisation and precision. Most documented cases, however, involve solitary tumours or multifocal disease in patients with genetic syndromes such as MEN-1. We present the case of a woman in her 20s who underwent robotic subtotal pancreatectomy for multifocal

Subxiphoid Robotic Thymectomy with Superior Vena Cava Resection.

We report the surgical technique for subxiphoid robotic thymectomy with combined superior vena cava (SVC) resection. A blood-drainage cannula was inserted into the left internal jugular vein as a blood-drainage route. A blood infusion cannula was inserted into the left femoral vein. During SVC clamping, an assistant pumped blood through the circuit to prevent clotting. The tumour, SVC, thymus, part of the pericardium and part of the right lung were excised en bloc through a subxiphoid incision. We limited reconstruction to the right brachiocephalic-SVC anastomosis. Robotic-assisted thymectomy

Robotic reconstruction in genitourinary tuberculosis: Surmounting technical challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) causes long ureteric strictures, bladder contracture and renal function impairment. While open reconstruction has been traditional, it entails considerable morbidity. Robotic-assisted reconstructive surgery provides three-dimensional visualisation, greater precision and expedited recovery. This study evaluates the complexities of reconstructive robotic surgery and explores strategies to mitigate them, aiming for optimal outcomes. The primary objective was to discern the surgical and technical challenges, intraoperative difficulties and perioperat

Multimodal Bionic Magnetic Miniature Amphibious Soft Robots.

Miniature amphibious soft robots (MASRs) show great potential for operation in unstructured and complex environments, owing to their ability to move flexibly through narrow spaces with complex obstacles. However, existing MASRs still lack diverse movement modes and struggle with inefficient performance in both aquatic and terrestrial locomotion, limiting their ability to meet the demands of motion in complex amphibious environments. Here, we propose a joint-based magnetic MASR with four locomotion modes: crawling, rolling, jumping, and swimming, inspired by the structural features of four orga

Approach to Robotic, Transabdominal, Left Hemi-Diaphragm Plication.

Impaired contractility of the diaphragm can occur secondary to diaphragm paralysis. Signs and symptoms of diaphragm paralysis vary among patients. Some may be asymptomatic and present incidentally, while others experience dyspnea secondary to impaired ventilation. Patients who are symptomatic from diaphragm paralysis may benefit from surgical intervention with diaphragm plication. Many surgical approaches are available for diaphragm plication, including open, thoracoscopic, laparoscopic, and robotic-assisted procedures. In this paper, we discuss our step-by-step approach to a robotic, transabd

Robotic Surgical Repair of a Parahiatal Hernia: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND Parahiatal hernias (PHHs) are uncommon diaphragmatic defects that can resemble paraesophageal hiatal hernias (PEHs), resulting in a diagnostic challenge and the potential for inappropriate preoperative surgical planning. Preoperative differentiation of PHH from PEH is difficult due to their anatomic proximity to the esophageal hiatus. This report highlights the importance of intraoperative recognition of PHH and the alteration of the surgical plan. Robotic assistance was used to facilitate visualization and repair of the defect. CASE REPORT A 71-year-old female patient presented wit

Robot-Assisted Radical Prostatectomy in a Heart Transplant Patient.

Literature on major urological surgery in heart transplant recipients remains limited because these patients historically had shorter life expectancies, limiting long-term surgical follow-up. However, advances in medical care, immunosuppressive therapy, and patient management have prolonged survival, increasing the incidence of age-related diseases, including prostate cancer. This intersection of cardiac transplantation and urological disease presents unique clinical challenges requiring further study of optimal surgical and postoperative management. Heart transplant patients receiving lifelon

BACKGROUND: Postoperative pancreatic fistula (POPF) is a major contributor to morbidity and mortality after pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD)1. Externalized pancreatic stents decrease the incidence and severity of POPF after PD2-6, but their feasibility has not been demonstrated in robotic PD. We present our method of externalized pancreatic stent placement during robotic PD and report our initial experience. METHODS: This video demonstrates our technique of using an externalized pancreatic stent during robotic PD. We conducted a retrospective review of patients who underwent robotic PD with exter
