Shear wave propagation in anisotropic soft tissues and gels.

The propagation of shear waves in soft tissue can be visualized by magnetic resonance elastography (MRE) to characterize tissue mechanical properties. Dynamic deformation of brain tissue arising from shear wave propagation may underlie the pathology of blast-induced traumatic brain injury. White matter in the brain, like other biological materials, exhibits a transversely isotropic structure, due to the arrangement of parallel fibers. Appropriate mathematical models and well-characterized experimental systems are needed to understand wave propagation in these structures. In this paper we revie

Phenomenon of adjustment of brain rhythm coordination in healthy adolescents and with traumatic brain injury: An important marker of post-traumatic brain restoration.

The recently proposed concept of cross-communication of physiologically significant cortical rhythms has expanded existing understanding of the cooperative dynamics of brain waves during changes in the functional state of the body, demonstrating the importance of identifying not only changes in the amplitudes of dominant rhythms or individual paired interactions, but also focusing on the coordination of non-dominant rhythmic processes. Based on this concept, we have discovered an important phenomenon demonstrating an adjustment of the cooperative dynamics of brain waves during deep sleep in yo

Role of the medullary vasomotor centre in the development of plateau waves.

Plateau waves can sometimes be found in various neurosurgical patients with increased intracranial pressure (ICP). In spite of the clinical importance of the waves, the precise mechanism producing them is still obscure. It has been reported that the waves are often accompanied by a reduction of arterial blood pressure (ABP) and suppression of respiration, suggesting a role of the brain stem in their development. In this study, we induced intracranial hypertension in dogs by occluding the neck veins, then stimulated the pressor and depressor areas of the brain stem, observing changes of ICP, AB

Interaction with slow waves during sleep improves discrimination of physiologic and pathologic high-frequency oscillations (80-500 Hz).

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the interaction between physiologic and pathologic high-frequency oscillations (HFOs) and slow waves during sleep, and to evaluate the practical significance of these interactions by automatically classifying channels as recording from normal or epileptic brain regions. METHODS: We automatically detected HFOs in intracerebral electroencephalography (EEG) recordings of 45 patients. We characterized the interaction between the HFOs and the amplitude and phase of automatically detected slow waves during sleep. We computed features associated with HFOs, and compared cla

Traumatic brain injury: The first 15 milliseconds.

OBJECTIVE: The physical events of the first 15 milliseconds of a traumatic brain injury are reviewed from computer simulations using finite element calculations and applied to observed pathology. METHODS: The impact creates two shock waves; one through the brain, another through the skull, both injure the brain separately. Two accelerations, anteroposterior and rotary, distort or stretch the brain, because of inertia. The two shockwaves are reflected many times within in the brain, from boundaries where the density or elasticity changes. RESULTS: Overlapping waves form powerful positive or n

Triphasic waves in coma from brainstem infarction.

There have been reports on patients in stupor or coma from a variety of disorders that affect the brain diffusely, notably hepatic failure, whose EEGs showed triphasic waves. We describe a patient in coma with neurologic signs localizing to the brainstem who had triphasic waves on EEG. This case further confirms the nonspecific nature of triphasic waves.

[Rhythm disorders of basic bioelectric activity of the brain in alcoholism and exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2)].

A visual and computer-assisted analysis was made of basic brain biological function in 45 EEG recordings of alpha waves alone or mostly alpha waves. The study revealed abnormal frequency of alpha waves in patients with chronic alcoholism (60%) and in people chronically exposed to carbon disulphide (73.4%). The abnormalities most probably reflect dysfunction of the CNS.

EEG oscillatory correlates of meditation practice: a systematic review and exploratory meta-analysis.

Meditation practice has been associated with changes in EEG oscillatory activity, although findings across studies remain heterogeneous. This systematic review and meta-analysis examined frequency-specific EEG patterns associated with meditation practice. Frequency-specific random-effects meta-analyses and multilevel nested mixed-effects meta-regression models were used to account for the non-independence of multiple effect sizes within studies. Significant positive pooled effects were observed for alpha, beta, and gamma oscillations, whereas no significant pooled effect was observed for theta

A Simplified Electroencephalogram Monitoring System in the Emergency Room.

OBJECTIVES: The study aims to assess the clinical usefulness and related limitations of our simplified emergency electroencephalography (eEEG) as an assessment tool of lethal abnormal brain waves in the emergency room (ER). METHODS: Electrodes were placed on 4 places: bilateral frontal poles and parietal regions. The derivations to judge consisted of only 2 bipolar leads on the left and right. Abnormal wave was defined as either persistent rhythmic waves or persistent high-amplitude slow waves (<2 Hz). The indications of eEEG were as follows: prolonged impairment of consciousness, suspected s

Rhythms in Decoding Do Not Signal Pulsing Information.

Emerging studies report that information decoded from brain activity may pulse at specific frequencies. As such inferences take root, I clarify that trial-level decoding time courses inherit background brain rhythms even when information content is stable. This cautions against conflating rhythms in decoding with rhythms in information content.

Therapeutic effects of antimotion sickness medications on the secondary symptoms of motion sickness.

In addition to nausea and vomiting, motion sickness involves slowing of brain waves, loss of performance, inhibition of gastric motility and the Sopite Syndrome. The therapeutic effects of antimotion sickness drugs on these reactions were evaluated. The subjects were rotated to the M-III end-point of motion sickness. Intramuscular (IM) medications were then administered. Side effects before and after rotation were reported on the Cornell Medical Index. Brain waves were recorded on a Grass Model 6 Electroencephalograph (EEG), and gastric emptying was studied after an oral dose of 1 mCi Techneti

Plateau Waves of Intracranial Pressure: Methods for Automatic Detection and Prediction.

Plateau waves are recurrent phenomena observed in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, characterised by an increase in intracranial pressure (ICP) above 40 mmHg combined with an almost zero arterial blood pressure (ABP) variation and, hence, a decrease in cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP). A raised ICP for a long period of time, namely plateau waves, can lead to a secondary brain injury. Due to the impaired cerebral autoregulation mechanism these TBI patients present, they are admitted to neurocritical care units (NCCUs) to be under continuous multimodal monitoring, which allows a correct di

Effect of Forward Head Posture on Resting State Brain Function.

Forward head posture (FHP) is a common postural problem experienced by most people. However, its effect on brain activity is still unknown. Accordingly, we aimed to observe changes in brain waves at rest to determine the effect of FHP on the nervous systems. A total of 33 computer users (Male = 17; Female = 16; age = 22.18 ± 1.88) were examined in both FHP and neutral posture. For each session, brain waves were measured for 5 min, and then muscle mechanical properties and cranio-vertebral angle (CVA) were measured. Changes in brain waves between the neutral posture and FHP were prominent in ga

Early Detection of Sepsis-Associated Encephalopathy Through Polymorphic Delta Waves in Single-Channel EEG: A Case Report.

Acute encephalopathy is a rapidly developing brain disorder that is often seen in critically ill patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). This diagnosis can have multiple causes, of which sepsis is one of them. Sepsis-associated encephalopathy (SAE) indicates compromised brain function due to the accumulation of metabolic by-products or the cause of the sepsis itself. One distinctive electroencephalography (EEG) feature is the presence of polymorphic delta (PMD) waves, which can be present even before the patient has the clinical manifestations of sepsis. These PMD waves can be detected usin

A proposal for realizing cognitive functions using traveling waves, phase-locked and synchronized patterns, holography, neural mixing, and single sideband communications.

Waves are fundamental. In our view, waves in the brain may constitute and drive organized neural activity patterns on individual neural and population levels. Their interactions follow basic physical principles. Taking a comprehensive, temporal and spatiotemporal perspective, we endeavor to explain multiple brain functions and behaviors with a unified mechanistic approach. Starting with neural architectures, traveling waves, and spikes as the basic signals of the system, our multidisciplinary theory proposes that precise temporal phase-locking codes, spike coincidences, phase relationships, re

The timing of sleep spindles is modulated by the respiratory cycle in humans.

OBJECTIVE: Coupling of sleep spindles with cortical slow waves and hippocampus sharp-waves ripples is crucial for sleep-related memory consolidation. Recent literature evidenced that nasal respiration modulates neural activity in large-scale brain networks. In rodents, this respiratory drive strongly varies according to vigilance states. Whether sleep oscillations are also respiration-modulated in humans remains open. In this work, we investigated the influence of breathing on sleep spindles during non-rapid-eye-movement sleep in humans. METHODS: Full night polysomnography of twenty healthy p

Sleep-stage dependent patterning of slowly propagating brain activity.

Endogenous brain activity plays a key role during sleep, facilitating important functions like learning and memory consolidation. Its precise mechanisms are not yet understood. Recent functional MRI (fMRI) research has revealed structured multi-second waves that travel across the cortex along a hierarchical functional gradient during wakefulness. However, how these waves are modulated across different sleep stages remains unclear. Here, we present compelling evidence of significant changes in both the frequency and spatiotemporal patterns of these waves across sleep stages. Notably, during rap

Overnight recordings of intracranial pressure and electroencephalography in neurosurgical patients. Part II: Changes in intracranial pressure during sleep.

Changes in intracranial pressure (ICP) during sleep were investigated in 37 patients with chronic intracranial hypertension or chronic hydrocephalus, in whom episodic pressure waves characterized by A-waves or episodic B-waves were seen in Part I of this paper. The patients were conscious, and sleep stages including REM sleep were observed in all of them. During non-REM sleep, ICP significantly rose in Stage II on many occasions, and was always lower in Stage IV than in other sleep stages. A marked elevation of ICP was seen in REM sleep. ICP changes during REM sleep were characterized by frequ

Acute intracranial hypertension and auditory brain-stem responses. Part 2: The effects of brain-stem movement on the auditory brain-stem responses due to transtentorial herniation.

Movement of the upper brain stem (inferior colliculus) was correlated with the alterations in the amplitude of wave V of the auditory brain-stem responses (BER's) during supratentorial brain compression in cats. In vivo observation of the brain stem and postmortem inspection show that suppression of the amplitude of BER wave V reflects the extent of caudal displacement of the inferior colliculus. Marked suppression of the amplitude of BER wave V (approximately 30% of control) correlates with the beginning of transtentorial herniation, and complete suppression of the wave V indicates complete t
