Using the highly sensitive Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA has already been detected in many patients negative for all other serological HBV markers [12]. But yet, the relevance of these findings as a marker of infectivity has not been determined. We therefore have used the PCR to examine the perinatal route of HBV transmission by testing sera from 109 mother-child pairs in Yaoundé, Cameroon. HBV-DNA was detected in 25 (23%) of the mother's sera from which only 5 were positive for HBsAg. At the age of 6 months only one baby out of 25 who could be retested had become

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is an important cause of morbidity in military forces. HBV threatens a safe blood supply for mass casualties, contributes to rising health care costs and presents an occupational risk to health care workers. The susceptibility of soldiers reflects that of other residents of their country of origin. In intermediate and high-prevalence regions, infections usually occur in young adults and follow exposure to an HBV carrier through blood or sexual contact. Control of HBV infections must rely on education regarding risk factors, screening of blood donors and immunization. Mi

HBV infection is hyperendemic in Thailand. Approximately 5 million Thais are chronic HBV carriers. The prevalence of HBV markers in general population varies from 40-60%. Approximately 10-20% of children between the ages 1-5 years have serologic evidence of HBV infection and this prevalence increases with age reaching a plateau of 40-60% by age 20. High risk groups are household contacts of HBsAg carriers and babies born to HBsAg positive mothers. Approximately 75% of the babies born to HBsAg & HBeAg positive mothers become HBsAg positive at 3 months after birth. A few studies showed that the

Vertical transmission from mother to fetus and from mother to newborn infant of HBV plays a major role in maintaining the hepatitis B endemic condition. After a review of the literature on the subject the Authors outline the data of three years of investigations performed on a sample of 5345 pregnant women, puerperae and their respective infants. These data point out: - the high rate, statistically significant, of HBsAg-positive women (2.63%), among those hospitalized for threatened abortion or abortion in progress; - the high positivity rate (16.39%) of cord blood samples of infants born to c

Personal observations have confirmed the frequent association of HB-infection with certain forms of vasculitis. 4 of 11 patients with polyarteritis nodosa were repeatedly found to be HBs-Ag positive and had chronic hepatitis of varying severity. In patients with giant cell arteritis (polymyalgia rheumatica and temporal arteritis) anti-HBs was found more frequently than in controls, especially when examined within 6 months after onset of symptoms (7 of 20 equal 35% had anti-HBs, versus 6% of controls). Several lines of evidence point to the important role played by circulating HBs-Ag/anti-HBs c

An association between viral hepatitis and two rheumatic disease syndromes has been observed. Twenty-nine patients manifested a transient polyarthritis, sometimes associated with a rash (Group I). Ten patients were seen with a multisystem disease (Group II). Histologic evidence of arteritis or glomerulonephritis was present in seven of ten patients with multisystem disease. Liver tissue from 18 patients showed morphologic evidence of hepatitis with viral features in 9 of 10 patients in Group I and in 6 of 8 patients in Group II. Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and/or antibody to HBsAg were

OBJECTIVE: The detection of dual-positivity for both hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg) and hepatitis B e antibody (anti-HBe) is not typically performed for patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV). This cross-sectional study was designed to figure out the prevalence of dual-positivity for both HBeAg and anti-HBe (DEP) among hospitalized patients with chronic hepatitis B virus infection (C-HBVI).
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 2820 cases with C-HBVI from two centers in China were retrospectively analyzed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses were undertaken to identify the risk f

BACKGROUND: In human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) co-infected patients from sub-Saharan Africa with hepatitis B e antigen (HBeAg)-negative status, data are limited on the evolution of HBV activity when antiretroviral treatment (ART) is absent.
METHODS: A total of 43 HBeAg-negative co-infected patients not indicated for ART (per concomitant World Health Organization recommendations) were followed during participation in a randomized controlled trial in Côte d'Ivoire. Chronic HBeAg-negative phases were classified at yearly visits and defined as 'infection' (HBV DNA ≤

To examine the role of hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in spontaneous hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance during the course of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, serum specimens from 32 asymptomatic HBsAg carriers and 22 patients with chronic hepatitis type B who underwent spontaneous HBsAg clearance were studied for antibody to HCV (anti-HCV) using commercial EIAs. The results were compared with those of control groups matched for age, sex, hepatitis B e antigen, antibody to hepatitis delta virus, and cirrhosis. Eight (25%) of the asymptomatic carriers and 9 (41%) of the p

This article provides a comprehensive overview of the current therapeutic approaches to managing hepatitis B virus infection. It begins with an outline of the goals of treatment, including viral suppression and prevention of liver disease progression. The article then delves into the current classes of antiviral agents used in clinical practice, such as nucleos(t)ide analogs (eg, tenofovir and entecavir) and pegylated interferon. The article then covers emerging therapies and novel agents under investigation, including capsid/core inhibitors, immune modulators, gene editing, and therapeutic va

A clearer view of the natural history of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection has permitted recognition of a phase of viral replication associated with progressive liver damage, and one of absent replication when the disease is inactive and when continued presence of hepatitis B surface antigen (HBs) is due to the integration of viral genes with the host genome. These two phases can be identified by HBe antigenaemia and anti-HBe, respectively. Several active antiviral drugs are available and may significantly benefit certain HBe Ag-positive groups. The antiviral activity of vidarabine and

BACKGROUND/AIMS: We investigated the dynamics of serum HBV pre-genomic RNA (pgRNA) and hepatitis B core-related antigen (HBcrAg) in patients receiving nucleos(t)ide analogues (NAs) and their predictability for favourable suppression of serum hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg).
METHODS: Serum viral biomarkers were measured at baseline, weeks 4, 12, 24, 36, and 48 of treatment. Patients were followed up thereafter and serum HBsAg level was measured at end of follow-up (EOFU). Favourable HBsAg response (FHR) was defined as ≤100 IU/mL or HBsAg seroclearance upon EOFU.
RESULTS: Twenty-eight hepa

Hepatitis B virus is a well-known infectious etiology of acute and chronic liver disease worldwide. Notably, 90% of children infected with hepatitis B in infancy develop chronic infection and subsequent progressive liver disease, including cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Significant reduction in perinatal transmission in the United States (US) was seen after implementation of universal infant vaccination 30 years ago, as well as dramatic reductions in HBV incidence across Asia, coinciding with widespread hepatitis B vaccination. However, with ongoing changes to federal vaccine guidance

This paper analyzes the impact of delaying the Hepatitis B vaccine beyond the first day of life following the recently updated guidelines of the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) regarding universal neonatal vaccination. We discuss the potential effects that delaying the initial hepatitis B vaccine dose until 2 months will have on global health communities, the economy, well-being, and development. Despite the WHO 2030 elimination goals, shifts toward delaying the newborn "birth dose" and rising vaccine hesitancy pose a risk of a public health reversal resulting in

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) is a DNA virus, belonging to the Hepadnaviridae family. It is a partially double-stranded DNA virus with a small viral genome (3.2 kb). Chronic HBV infection remains a global public health problem. If left untreated, chronic HBV infection can progress to end-stage liver disease, such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). In recent years, tremendous advances in the field of HBV basic and clinical research have been achieved, ranging from the HBV biological characteristics, immunopathogenesis, and animal models to the development of new therapeutic strate

Liver transplantation (LT) is the only effective treatment for hepatitis B-virus (HBV) related end stage liver disease, even if the outcome of these patients, has significantly improved after introduction of effective and well tolerated nucleoside/nucleotide analogues (NUC). Pre-transplant therapy has been initially based on lamivudine, but entecavir and tenofovir represent the currently recommended first-line therapeutic option in patients with HBV decompensated cirrhosis. After LT, the development of hepatitis B immunoglobulin (HBIG) in the early 1990's dramatically changes the prognosis of

Hepatitis A virus causes acute viral hepatitis, presenting with jaundice, nausea, and vomiting. Symptoms are self-limited and treated symptomatically. Routine vaccination of infants has greatly reduced the incidence in the United States. Vaccination is recommended for all infants and adults at increased risk. Hepatitis B virus can cause acute and chronic viral hepatitis. Acute hepatitis B is usually self-limited, but can develop into a chronic infection. Patients are at highest risk for developing chronic disease if they are infected at a younger age. Routine vaccination and universal screenin

Chronic hepatitis B (CHB) is a widespread infectious disease with unfavorable outcomes and life-threatening consequences for patients, in spite of modern vaccination and antiviral treatment modalities. Cutting-edge experimental approaches have demonstrated key pathways that involve cross-talk between viral particles and host immune cells. All events, including penetration of hepatitis B virus (HBV) particles into host cells, establishing persistence, and chronization of CHB infection, and possibility of complete elimination of HBV particles are controlled by the immune system. Researchers have
