Ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors. A clinicopathological analysis of 207 cases.

The clinical and pathological features of 207 ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors from our consultation and hospital files were reviewed. The patients ranged in age from 2 to 75 (average 25) years. Seventy-five percent of them were 30 years of age or younger and less than 10% were over 50 years of age. One-third of the patients presented because of unequivocal evidence of androgen excess, and an additional 10% had a history suggesting androgen excess; most of the remaining patients complained of abdominal swelling or pain. At operation, 97.5% of the tumors were Stage I, 1.5% were Stage II, and

A clinicopathological analysis of 40 cases of ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the clinicopathological features of ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCTs) and to explore the reasonable therapy. METHODS: A total of 40 cases of SLCTs were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: The incidence of SLCTs was 0.41%, with a median age of 28 years. All tumors were confined to one ovary. Four tumors were well differentiated, 14 were intermediately differentiated, 20 were poorly differentiated, and 2 were undefined; 2 cases had heterologous elements, and 3 had a retiform pattern. The patients were classified into 3 groups: androgen excess (25/40), estrogen ex

Degenerative changes in the digestive glands of rats bearing Leydig cell tumors.

We undertook this study to determine the effects of a transplantable Leydig cell tumor on the major digestive glands of the host rats. It has been known that after bearing this tumor for only two weeks, the rats become anorexic and cathectic, develop hypercalcemia and osteolysis, and their peripheral bone marrow becomes hyperplastic. We now demonstrate that the parotid glands undergo marked degeneration including depletion of secretory product, apparent loss of acinar organization and the appearance of conjoined nuclei. The submandibular and sublingual glands and the pancreas are virtually una

Progression from Peripheral to Central Precocious Puberty in a Child with Leydig Cell Tumor.

An 8-y-old boy presented with premature virilization and was found to have peripheral precocious puberty due to a unilateral Leydig cell tumor. The mass was surgically excised, and histopathology confirmed the diagnosis. Postoperatively, androgen levels normalized; however, within months, he developed accelerated growth, testicular enlargement, and rising gonadotropins, consistent with central precocious puberty. Treatment with a gonadotropin releasing hormone analogue stabilized pubertal progression. This case underscores the need to consider Leydig cell tumors in boys with early virilization

Benign Leydig cell tumor presenting in a solitary testis with cryptorchidism: A case report.

Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) are uncommon testicular neoplasms, accounting for 1-3 % of cases. While most are benign, a small subset demonstrates malignant potential, making accurate diagnosis and tailored management essential. We report the case of a 52-year-old man with a history of cryptorchidism and prior orchiectomy who presented with inguinal pain and infertility. Imaging revealed a solitary testis with a small intratesticular lesion. Intraoperative frozen section suggested a Leydig cell tumor, and partial orchiectomy was performed. Final pathology confirmed a benign LCT. The patient remain

Bilateral ovarian cystic teratomas with a left Sertoli Leydig cell tumor: A case report.

RATIONALE: Ovarian mature cystic teratoma (MCT) is the most common ovarian germ cell tumor, and it is typically unilateral, although bilateral MCTs have been observed. Sertoli Leydig cell tumors (SLCTs) are rare ovarian tumors that can cause hyperandrogenemia. When patients have these 2 tumors at the same time, it is highly challenging to diagnose them. PATIENT CONCERN: A 32-year-old female patient who complained of a pelvic mass for 1 year and amenorrhea for 6 months with high testosterone and 17-hydroxyprogesterone levels was suspected of having a malignant ovarian tumor. Transvaginal ultra

Fertility before and after treatment of the patient with Leydig cell tumor - case report.

Even though Leydig cell tumor (LCT) represents the most common neoplasia among testicular sex cord-stromal tumors (SCSTs), it is a rare condition, comprising 1-2% of all testicular tumors, with a 10% risk of malignancy most commonly located in retroperitoneal lymph nodes. LCTs may demonstrate various clinical manifestations - from asymptomatic intratesticular swelling through nonspecific symptoms such as loss of libido, impotence or infertility, up to feminizing or virilizing syndromes due to hormonal activity of the tumor. This article presents a case of Leydig cell tumor that was associated

A Boy with 46,XX Karyotype (SRY Double-positive) and a Leydig Cell Tumor.

Leydig cell tumors are the most common type of testicular sex cord stromal tumors. The presence of the Y chromosome is associated with tumor risk in sex development disorders (DSD), however tumor development without Y chromosome is extremely rare. A 16-year-old boy diagnosed with Leydig cell tumor due to a mass in the right testis was referred after the right orchiectomy. On physical examination, the left testis was 10 mL, and there was a labial residue in penoscrotal region. Bilateral gynecomastia was present. The karyotype was 46,XX and SRY was double-positive on fluorescent in situ hybridiz

DICER1 Syndrome in Twins With Ovarian Sertoli-Leydig Cell Tumor and Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma.

DICER1 syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant syndrome resulting in benign and malignant tumors in various organs with tumors in endocrine organs (pituitary, thyroid, adrenal, ovaries, and pancreas). Here we present a rare case of 18-year-old twin sisters with DICER1 syndrome who presented at the age of 15 years with hirsutism, deepening of the voice, and amenorrhea. They were diagnosed with a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary and underwent unilateral oophorectomy, with no evidence of recurrence or metastasis during follow-up. Genetic analysis showed the same germline DICER1 mutation in bo

A rare ovarian Leydig cell tumor (hilar type) causing virilization in a postmenopausal woman.

All patients with virilization signs, increased levels of androgen hormones and rapidly progressive hirsutism should be evaluated for an androgen-producing tumor. The ovarian origin of virilization can be suspected by the presence of elevated levels of circulating androgens, with normal levels of cortisol metabolites and a negative dexamethasone suppression test. A case report of a 50-year-old postmenopausal patient with rapidly progressive hirsutism is presented. After an extensive preoperative investigation a right oophorectomy was performed and a Leydig-hilus cell tumor was diagnosed.

Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor: a rare ovarian neoplasm. Case report and review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor is a gonadal tumor of the sex cord-stromal type. It is a rare tumor comprising 0.1 to 0.5% of all ovarian tumors. Management of these cases poses a difficult therapeutic challenge. CASE: A 13-year-old girl presented with acute urinary retention, excessive hair growth and deepening of the voice. A mass the size of a 28-week gravid uterus was arising from the pelvis. Serum testosterone level was raised to 145.2 ng/dl. Computed tomography revealed a heterogeneously hypoechoic, solid cystic mass arising from the left adnexa. Left salpingo-oophorectomy was don

Fine needle aspiration of metastatic malignant Leydig cell tumor of testis: a case report.

A 53-year-old male presented with a right inguinal mass of one-year duration. The fine needle aspiration of the inguinal mass showed a highly cellular tumor composed of sheets and isolated, large round to polygonal cells with moderate pleomorphism. Many bare nuclei were seen with occasional intranuclear inclusions. A provisional diagnosis of metastasis probably of testicular tumour was made. The orchidectomy showed a brown tumor replacing the entire testis and infiltrating the epididymis. The histological features showed Leydig cell tumor without Reinke crystalloids.

A Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor and pregnancy. Clinical, endocrine, radiologic, and electron microscopic findings.

An extremely rare case of a conception occurring in a 26-year-old patient with a small virilizing Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor (diameter: 0.6 cm), bilateral polycystic ovaries and non-tumorous adrenal hyperandrogenism is presented. Prepregnancy findings included hirsutism, clitoromegaly, secondary amenorrhea, and elevated peripheral plasma testosterone (T; 5.7 ng/ml). Extensive basal steroid screening, dynamic function tests, conventional radiologic procedures, selective glandular vein catheterization, and laparoscopy failed to localize unequivocally the source of androgen excess, but suggested b

Leydig cell tumors of the testis with unusual features: adipose differentiation, calcification with ossification, and spindle-shaped tumor cells.

We report 19 Leydig cell tumors (LCTs) of the testis with adipose differentiation (n = 12) and/or spindle cell growth (n = 8) in patients 28-70 years of age; three tumors with adipose differentiation showed psammomatous calcifications, two of which also had foci of ossification. In eight tumors fat-like cells apparently derived from lipid accumulation within neoplastic Leydig cells and appeared as focal to prominent clusters in a background of vacuolated, neoplastic Leydig cells. The fat-like cells were usually immunoreactive for Leydig cell markers (inhibin-alpha, calretinin, and melan-A) but

Barbiturates inhibit progesterone synthesis in cultured Leydig tumor cells and human granulosa cells.

Screening drugs used in obstetrical practice for effects on steroid hormone synthesis revealed that phenobarbital inhibited progesterone synthesis in MA-10 Leydig tumor cells. The inhibition was apparently a drug class effect since it could be reproduced by other barbiturates. Barbiturate blockade was reversible and could be bypassed in the MA-10 cells by using 22-hydroxycholesterol. Human granulosa cell progesterone synthesis was also inhibited in a dose dependent fashion by phenobarbital, secobarbital and barbituric acid. Significant inhibition occurred in dose ranges that would be therapeut

Rare case of ovarian Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor in an adolescent: a case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Androgen-producing tumors are rare in females, typically arising from the ovaries or adrenal glands. Sertoli-Leydig cell tumors (SLCTs) are uncommon sex cord-stromal ovarian tumors that cause hyperandrogenism, leading to virilization symptoms such as hirsutism, deep voice, and amenorrhea. Their rarity and similarity with other androgen-secreting conditions make diagnosis challenging. This case report describes an SLCT in a 16-year-old girl, underscoring the value of early diagnosis and fertility-sparing surgery. CASE PRESENTATION: A 16-year-old girl presented with

Ovarian Leydig Cell Tumor Associated with Recurrent Torsion and Virilization in an Adolescent Patient.

Ovarian tumors are rare in children; however, their incidence increases with age. Of these ovarian tumors, Leydig cell tumors are some of the rarest, accounting for less than 0.1% of all ovarian tumors across all ages. Leydig cell tumors predominantly occur in postmenopausal women and are characterized by nodular proliferation of Leydig cells in the ovarian hilum with intracytoplasmic Reinke crystals. These tumors secrete androgens, which can disrupt ovarian function, clinically presenting with abnormal uterine bleeding and virilization. Although they are generally benign, current recommendati

Hirsutism as the initial presentation of malignant ovarian Leydig cell tumor: A case report.

Ovarian steroid cell tumors are a rare subtype of sex-cord stromal cell tumors. Overall, these tumors make <0.1% of all ovarian tumors. These neoplasms can be divided according to the cell of origin into stromal luteomas, Leydig cell tumors, and steroid cell tumors not otherwise specified. These tumors can be benign, malignant, or borderline, with variable presentation. We report a case of 24-year-old virgin female who was referred to our hospital after being diagnosed with steroid cell tumor-not otherwise specified. Prior to her admission, the patient had been treated unsuccessfully with oral
