Water/Fat Separated Echo Planar Time-Resolved Imaging (WFS-EPTI) for Distortion-Free Multi-Contrast MRI.

PURPOSE: Echo-planar time-resolved imaging (EPTI) provides distortion- and T2/T2* blurring-free multi-echo/multi-contrast imaging with fast speed, making it an efficient acquisition method for various MRI applications. Here, we aim to achieve water-fat separation for EPTI to improve fat signal removal for brain/body imaging applications. THEORY AND METHODS: A water/fat separated EPTI (WFS-EPTI) technique is developed, which leverages the intrinsic multi-echo data provided by EPTI readout and introduces a novel strategy for highly-accelerated spatiotemporal encoding and reconstruction to separ

Sympathetic nerve activity in the spasm-induced coronary artery region is associated with disease activity of vasospastic angina.

OBJECTIVES: We assessed the relation between sympathetic nerve activity and disease activity of vasospastic angina. BACKGROUND: The autonomic nervous system has been proposed to play a key role in attacks of vasospastic angina. A unique feature of vasospastic angina attacks is periodic fluctuation, which complicates the assessment of disease activity. METHODS: Twenty-five patients with left anterior descending coronary artery (LAD) spasm were studied: 12 with recent onset of chest pain (group 1) and 13 free of angina for more than 3 months after discontinuing medication (group 2). Background segmentation and aberration fitting via deep learning for accurate phase correction in digital holographic interferometry.

Digital holographic interferometry is a high-precision technique for quantitative imaging and measurement. However, the phase retrieved from interference patterns requires correction to obtain the true object phase. Existing numerical methods typically rely on either assumed prior constraints (as in traditional optimization-based approaches) or accurate correction data labels (as in deep learning-based methods), making it difficult to achieve an optimal balance between improving accuracy and reducing dependence on labelled data. To this end, we propose a joint neural network framework comprisi

Two-phase non-invasive multi-disease detection via sublingual region.

Non-invasive multi-disease detection is an active technology that detects human diseases automatically. By observing images of the human body, computers can make inferences on disease detection based on artificial intelligence and computer vision techniques. The sublingual vein, lying on the lower part of the human tongue, is a critical identifier in non-invasive multi-disease detection, reflecting health status. However, few studies have fully investigated non-invasive multi-disease detection via the sublingual vein using a quantitative method. In this paper, a two-phase sublingual-based dise

Phase entropy of gated SPECT-MPI for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events: incremental prognostic value beyond perfusion and function.

BACKGROUND: Gated SPECT myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) phase analysis provides a quantitative assessment of left ventricular mechanical synchrony, enabling cardiovascular risk stratification. Phase entropy, a derived imaging biomarker, reflects the spatiotemporal heterogeneity of myocardial contraction. However, its prognostic significance and clinically applicable threshold values have not been rigorously validated. This study aimed to determine the independent prognostic value of phase entropy for predicting major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE). RESULTS: Among 1,674 coronary arter

Three-dimensional imaging of whole mouse models: comparing nondestructive X-ray phase-contrast micro-CT with cryotome-based planar epi-illumination imaging.

In this study, we compare two evolving techniques for obtaining high-resolution 3D anatomical data of a mouse specimen. On the one hand, we investigate cryotome-based planar epi-illumination imaging (cryo-imaging). On the other hand, we examine X-ray phase-contrast micro-computed tomography (micro-CT) using synchrotron radiation. Cryo-imaging is a technique in which an electron multiplying charge coupled camera takes images of a cryo-frozen specimen during the sectioning process. Subsequent image alignment and virtual stacking result in volumetric data. X-ray phase-contrast imaging is based on

An accelerated framework for high-resolution X-ray holographic reconstruction.

X-ray propagation-based phase contrast imaging, a well established imaging technology in synchrotron radiation facilities, enables high-resolution 3D structural reconstruction. Nevertheless, the phase retrieval process required to restore quantitative phase information from holograms remains a significant challenge. Existing software solutions face problems such as performance bottlenecks and limitations in hardware support. Here, we describe a high-performance software named HiHolo based on the CUDA-MPI architecture for the holographic regime, and propose three improved iterative phase retrie

Delayed-Phase Enhancement for Evaluation of Malignant Pleural Mesothelioma on Computed Tomography: A Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Radiologic assessment of malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM) on computed tomography (CT) imaging can be limited by similar attenuations of MPM and adjacent tissues. This can result in inaccuracies in defining the presence and extent of pleural tumor burden. We hypothesized that increasing the time delay for pleural enhancement will optimize discrimination between MPM and noncancerous tissues on CT. Here we conduct a prospective observational study to determine the optimal time delay for imaging MPM on CT. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Adult MPM patients (n = 15) were enrolled in this pro

Quantitative MRI and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry imaging of iron in the frontal cortex of healthy controls and Alzheimer's disease patients.

Accumulation of iron within the cortex of Alzheimer's disease (AD) patients has been reported by numerous MRI studies using iron-sensitive methods. Validation of iron-sensitive MRI is important for the interpretation of in vivo findings. In this study, the relation between the spatial iron distribution and T2∗-weighted MRI in the human brain was investigated using a direct comparison of spatial maps of iron as detected by T2∗-weighted MRI, iron histochemistry and laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS), in postmortem brain tissue of the medial frontal gyrus of t

Quantifying lung morphology with respiratory-gated micro-CT in a murine model of emphysema.

Non-invasive micro-CT imaging techniques have been developed to investigate lung structure in free-breathing rodents. In this study, we investigate the utility of retrospectively respiratory-gated micro-CT imaging in an emphysema model to determine if anatomical changes could be observed in the image-derived quantitative analysis at two respiratory phases. The emphysema model chosen was a well-characterized, genetically altered model (TIMP-3 knockout mice) that exhibits a homogeneous phenotype. Micro-CT scans of the free-breathing, anaesthetized mice were obtained in 50 s and retrospectively r
