Intraoperative Radiation Exposure with Percutaneous vs Hybrid Hallux Valgus Correction: A Comparative Study.

BACKGROUND: Minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for hallux valgus (HV) deformity have gained popularity over traditional open techniques in recent years. However, MIS techniques pose concerns about increased fluoroscopy use and potential radiation exposure. This study seeks to compare the radiation exposure between percutaneous HV correction and a hybrid technique using a mini C-arm. METHODS: In this prospective study, 68 patients underwent HV correction surgery between February 2022 and July 2023. Group 1 consisted of 37 patients who underwent percutaneous chevron and Akin osteotomy whereas gro

Leuco-crystal-violet micelle gel dosimeters: I. Influence of recipe components and potential sensitizers.

Radiochromic leuco crystal violet (LCV) micelle gel dosimeters are promising three-dimensional radiation dosimeters because of their spatial stability and suitability for optical readout. The effects of surfactant type and surfactant concentration on dose sensitivity of LCV micelle gels are tested, demonstrating that dose sensitivity and initial colour of the gel increases with increasing Triton x-100 (Tx100) concentration. Using Cetyl Trimethyl Ammonium Bromide (CTAB) in place of Tx100 produces gels that are nearly colourless prior to irradiation, but reduces the dose sensitivity. The separat

Assessment of rectal dose with thermoluminescent in vivo dosimetry in high-dose-rate cobalt-60 intracavitary brachytherapy for cervical cancer: A two-arm cohort study using orthogonal images planning.

PURPOSE: High-dose-rate intracavitary brachytherapy delivers high radiation doses to tumors while minimizing exposure to surrounding normal cells. However, inappropriate administration can lead to radiation-induced toxicity by overdosing organs at risk. This study evaluated and compared the rectum doses planned by treatment planning system and measured using a thermoluminescent dosimeter. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLD) were employed to measure radiation dose to the rectum across two patient groups: one treated using first fraction-based planning (FFP), and the other

Fluoroscopic radiation exposure: are we protecting ourselves adequately?

BACKGROUND: While traditional intraoperative fluoroscopy protection relies on thyroid shields and aprons, recent data suggest that the surgeon's eyes and hands receive more exposure than previously appreciated. Using a distal radial fracture surgery model, we examined (1) radiation exposure to the eyes, thyroid, chest, groin, and hands of a surgeon mannequin; (2) the degree to which shielding equipment can decrease exposure; and (3) how exposure varies with fluoroscopy unit size. METHODS: An anthropomorphic model was fit with radiation-attenuating glasses, a thyroid shield, an apron, and glov

Graphite foils as potential skin and epithelium dosimeters at therapeutic photon energies.

This work builds upon a prior study, examining the dosimetric utility of pencil lead and thin graphitic sheets, focusing upon the measurement of skin doses within the mammographic regime. In recognizing the near soft-tissue equivalence of graphite and the earlier-observed favourable thermoluminescence yield of thin sheets of graphite, this has led to present study of 50 μm thick graphite for parameters typical of external beam fractionated radiotherapy and skin dose evaluations. The graphite layers were annealed and then stacked to form an assembly of 0.5 mm nominal thickness. Using a 6 MV pho

Polymer gel dosimetry by nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) magnetic resonance imaging.

The response to radiation of polymer gel dosimeters has previously been measured by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in terms of changes in the water transverse relaxation rate (R 2w) or magnetization transfer (MT) parameters. Here we report a new MRI approach, based on detecting nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) mediated saturation transfer effects, which can also be used to detect radiation and measure dose distributions in MAGIC-f (Methacrylic and Ascorbic Acid and Gelatin Initiated by Copper Solution with formaldehyde) polymer gels. Results show that the NOE effects produced by low powe

The decay constant for irradiated human hair using EPR spectroscopy.

This paper reports the results of a study of gamma-irradiated human hair using CW-EPR. The radiation centre in hair was determined, for the first time, to be characterized by a single decay constant with k = 4.86(9) microseconds-1 for brown and yellow hair and k = 1.45(10) microseconds-1 for red hair for initial doses between 50 and 634 Gy. It is suggested that human hair has the potential to be used as a dosimeter for accidental exposure to ionizing radiation if measurements are commenced within approximately 24 h.

Evidence for a teratogenic risk in the offspring of health personnel exposed to ionizing radiation?!

BACKGROUND: The evidence concerning safety of occupational exposure to ionizing radiation on teratogenic effects mainly relies on animal models, disaster epidemiology and experience in cancer etiology. Following an explorative result on maternal exposure in medical occupations we conducted a feasibility study, addressing congenital anomalies (CA) in the offspring of health workers potentially exposed to radiation. METHODS: In a prospective follow-up study, we enrolled women, identified by mandatory registration at the office of radiation protection as wearing a dosimeter. The participating wo

Flexible optically stimulated luminescence band for 1D in vivo radiation dosimetry.

In vivo dosimetry helps ensure the accuracy of radiation treatments. However, standard techniques are only capable of point sampling, making it difficult to accurately measure dose variation along curved surfaces in a continuous manner. The purpose of this work is to introduce a flexible dosimeter band and validate its performance using pre-clinical and clinical x-ray sources. Dosimeter bands were fabricated by uniformly mixing BaFBr:Eu storage phosphor powders into a silicone based elastomer. An optical readout device with dual-wavelength excitation was designed and built to correct for non-u

Assessment of air kerma-area product in computed tomography using small solid-state dosemeters.

Technological advances in computed tomography (CT) have highlighted limitations of traditional dose descriptors such as computed tomography dose indexvol and dose-length product, particularly for wide-beam and modulated acquisitions. This study investigates a CT-specific, operational air kerma-area product derived from time-resolved measurements using small solid-state dosemeters mounted at the gantry aperture. A mathematical framework is presented that accounts for tube rotation, bow-tie filtration, beam geometry, and the longitudinal dose profile. Model validation was performed using measure

Three-dimensional source position verification in image-guided high-dose-rate brachytherapy using an XCT-based gel dosimeter.

BACKGROUND: Comprehensive quality assurance (QA) for a seamless workflow of high-dose-rate brachytherapy, from imaging to planning and irradiation, is uncommon, and QA of the source dwell position is performed in one- or two-dimensions. Gel dosimetry using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is effective in verifying the three-dimensional distribution of doses for image-guided brachytherapy (IGBT). However, MRI scanners are not readily accessible, and MRI scanning is time-consuming. Nevertheless, X-ray computed tomography (XCT) is available for IGBT planning. PURPOSE: In this study, we designed

Fast occupational upper-limb radiation dose prediction using machine learning and Monte Carlo simulation.

Interventional procedures expose physicians to scattered radiation, particularly to their upper extremities, posing occupational health risks. Existing extremity dosimeters such as thermoluminescents, optically stimulated luminescence rings and active personal dosimeters provide limited spatial information, exhibit angular and energy dependence and offer little or no real-time feedback. This study develops machine learning (ML) models to estimate radiation dose values at discrete upper-limb locations using Monte Carlo (MC)-derived data and procedure-specific parameters. A dataset of 10 000 MC

Conventional radiation-biological dosimetry using frequencies of unstable chromosome aberrations.

Frequency of chromosome aberrations detected by conventional cytogenetics is a very useful parameter in biological radiodosimetry. It can be used for estimating absorbed doses in individuals working with radioactive sources and individuals accidentally exposed to radiation. In the first case subjects wear physical dosimeters as a routine safety habit. Our laboratory at the Institute of Radioprotection and Dosimetry (IRD, Brazil) has been using conventional cytogenetic analysis to complement data obtained by physical dosimetry since 1983. Until now, we have investigated more than one hundred ca

Ultraviolet radiation thin film dosimetry: A review of properties and applications.

Spectroradiometry, radiometry, and dosimetry are employed for the measurement of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) irradiance and non-ionizing exposure. Different types of UVR dosimeter have been developed for measuring personal and environmental UVR exposures since film dosimetry was pioneered in the 1970s. An important type of dosimeter is the thin film variant, which contains materials that undergo changes in optical absorbance when exposed to UVR. These changes can be measured at a specific wavelength using a spectrophotometer. Thin film dosimeters allow UVR exposure measurements on humans at va
