Mycobacterium tuberculosis is responsible for over 8 million cases of tuberculosis (TB) annually. Natural products may play important roles in the chemotherapy of TB. The antimycobacterial activity and the innate immune response of methanol (METH) and dichloromethane (DCM) extracts of Indigofera suffruticosa Miller (Fabaceae) were evaluated. We observed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) for METH and DCM extracts were 125 and 1000 microg/mL, respectively. However, they were able to induce the innate immune response through the production of high levels of NO and TNF-alpha (p < 0

Phytochemical investigation on the roots of Astragalus condensatus (Fabaceae) led to the isolation of seven previously undescribed cycloartane-type triterpenoids, named astracondensatols F-L (1-7), alongside twelve known cycloartane derivatives (8-19) and fifteen other known secondary metabolites (20-34). The structures of these compounds were elucidated through comprehensive spectroscopic analysis, including 1D and 2D NMR, as well as high-resolution electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (HRESIMS). The isolated triterpenoids were evaluated for their effect on nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)

Seeds of Mucuna pruriens (L.) DC. (Fabaceae) were analyzed for protein composition of protein bodies isolated from cotyledons. Protein bodies were successfully separated by Lympholyte and those of dry seeds, observed by scanning electron microscope, were elliptical or spherical in shape with a diameter of 5-12 μm. Protein content in dry seed protein bodies was 10.6 mg/g dry weight. Globulin was the largest protein fraction isolated (62.5 %), followed by albumin (18.3 %), glutelin (15.8 %) and prolamin (3.4 %). The prolamin fraction and high glutelin content are uncommon in legumes. SDS-PAGE of

The species-rich legume family displays diverse mechanisms for pollen presentation and release, including brush, piston, valvular, and explosive types, influenced by variations in floral architecture. Among papilionoids, a group characterized by flag-flowers, early-branching species often deviate from this typical pattern. This study investigates Myroxylon peruiferum L.f., an early-branching papilionoid legume native to the Brazilian Atlantic Forest, with non-papilionaceous flowers. Through detailed macromorphological, anatomical, histochemical, and ultrastructural analyses of floral organs, w

Autophagy is a genetically regulated, eukaryotic catabolic pathway that responds to internal and external cellular signals. In plants, it plays crucial roles in development, and responses to abiotic and biotic stresses. Due to its role in limiting the hypersensitive response, research on the molecular mechanisms of autophagic signalling pathways in plant-microbe interactions has primarily focused on plant-pathogen responses. Although there is substantially less information on the role of autophagy signalling in symbiotic plant-microbe interactions, there is accumulating evidence that it is als

BACKGROUND: Legumes belonging to the family Fabaceae of the order Fabales are a widely consumed source of protein. IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions to legumes have been described, the most studied allergens being peanuts and soybeans. In the Mediterranean region and India, lentils, chickpeas and peas have been considered important allergens and legumes have been reported to represent the fifth most common cause of food allergy in children under 5 years of age in Spain. In Latin America, there are few reports of allergy to legumes other than peanuts, and these are especially in the paedi

Legumes are a staple of diets all around the world. In some least developed countries, they are the primary source of protein; however, their beneficial properties go beyond their nutritional value. Recent research has shown that legumes have bioactive compounds like peptides, polyphenols and saponins, which exhibit antioxidant, antihypertensive, anti-inflammatory and other biological activities. Thus, these compounds could be an alternative treatment for inflammatory diseases, in particular, chronic inflammation such as arthritis, obesity and cancer. Nowadays, there is a growing interest in a

Pulses are a staple food cultivated since ancient times, which play an important role in the human diet. From a nutritional point of view, pulses are very interesting foods as they are rich in proteins, carbohydrates and dietary fibre. Dietary antioxidants are a complex mixture of hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds usually present in foods of plant origin, including pulses. In the present study, the phytochemical composition of selected pulses (common beans, fava beans, lentils, chickpeas, peas and lupins) has been reviewed in terms of their content of antioxidant compounds. The content of h

Stylosanthes guianensis is a fodder legume native from South America and widely grown worldwide. Dried plant material was purchased on the web and taxonomically identified by light and SEM microscopy, and morphological analysis of plants germinated from seeds. The plant was extracted with dichloromethane:2-propanol (9:1). Bioguided fractionation using calcein-AM cytotoxicity assay on HeLa and A431 tumor cells allowed to isolate a lipophilic fraction, endowed with strong cytotoxicity. By means of 1- and 2-D NMR, HPLC-MS, and HR-ESIMS it could be seen that the fraction was an inseparable mixture

Copper deficiency or toxicity in agricultural soil circumscribes a plant's growth and physiology, hampering photochemical and biochemical networks within the system. So far, copper sulfate (CS) has been used widely despite its toxic effect. To get around this long-standing problem, copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) have been synthesized, characterized, and tested on mung bean plants along with commercially available salt CS, to observe morphological abnormalities enforced if any. CuNPs enhanced photosynthetic activity by modulating fluorescence emission, photophosphorylation, electron transport cha

The larvicidal activity of the crude petroleum ether, ethyl acetate, acetone, chloroform and ethanol extracts of Amorpha fruticosa seeds was individually assayed for toxicity against the early fourth-instar larva of the mosquito, Culex pipiens pallens after 24 h exposure. Of the tested extracts, the ethanol one exhibited the highest larvicidal activity (LC50 = 22.69 mg/L). Amorphigenin (8'-hydroxyrotenone), a rotenoid compound which exhibits a strong larvicidal activity with LC50 and LC90 values of 4.29 and 11.27 mg/L, respectively, was isolated from the ethanol extract by column chromatograpy

Glycosidase activities with starch and PNP-glycosides as substrates can be detected in the cotyledons, leaves, pods and teguments of Vicia faba beans. The mainly hydrolize alpha- and beta-glucosides, alpha- and beta-galactosides as well as starch. The amylase activity arises at very early stages of seed maturation and then rapidly decreases, whereas glycosidases increase up to the 30% of the beans dry weight before decreasing. The beta-glucosidase might play a role in regulating the metabolism of possibly haemolitic glycosides (i.e. vicine, convicine and L-DOPA glucoside) thus explaining the p
