Early findings of morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint after orthognathic surgery in mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry.

This study was performed to investigate early morphological changes in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), after patients with mandibular prognathism with facial asymmetry (MPA) received orthognathic surgery. The morphological changes in the TMJ were analyzed on computed tomography multi-sectional reconstructed images first taken before preoperative orthodontic treatment and then again 6 months after orthognathic surgery, in 39 patients with MPA. A combination of Le Fort I osteotomy and bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) was performed in 22 patients and BSSO alone was performed in 17 pat

Postoperative stability of two common ramus osteotomy procedures for the correction of mandibular prognathism: A randomized controlled trial.

The aim of this randomized controlled trial was to compare the skeletal stability between sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) and intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO) in the treatment of mandibular prognathism. Patients presenting with mandibular prognathism and scheduled for orthognathic surgery were randomized into either the SSRO group or the IVRO group. Changes at B-point were assessed by serial tracing of lateral cephalograms, which were taken preoperatively, and at 2 weeks, 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years postoperatively. Ninety-eight patients were recruited, with 49 patients in eac

Management of Developing Skeletal Class III Malocclusion in a Prepubertal Girl with Prognathic Mandible in Late Mixed Dentition.

Treatment of skeletal Class III patients at younger age is highly unpredictable. The patient may respond well to the treatment or may show excessive mandibular growth during growth spurt which may require orthognathic surgery later on. If not treated at earlier stages of life, the condition may worsen with time. This case report will present the comprehensive orthodontic management of a 9-year-old prepubertal girl in late mixed dentition with prognathic mandible. Chin cup therapy was started and continued for 3 years. After chin cup therapy, maxillary and mandibular dentition were bonded with

Anatomical variations of the mental foramen in prognathic, retrognathic and orthognathic mandibles: a cone-beam computed tomography based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The mental foramen is a key anatomical landmark that transmits the mental nerve and vessels. Its position varies across individuals and skeletal patterns, making accurate localization essential during surgical procedures such as local anesthesia, implant placement, and dental extractions. The objective of this study was to assess the horizontal position of the mental foramen, the distance from the mental foramen to the adjacent tooth apex and the distance from the superior border of the mental foramen to the inferior border of the mandible in individuals with prognathic, retrogna

Investigation of dermatoglyphic patterns for mandibular retrognathism or maxillary prognathism as a novel diagnostic approach for skeletal Class II malocclusion.

BACKGROUND: Dermatoglyphics, the study of fingerprint patterns, is derived from the ectoderm, the same embryological layer responsible for craniofacial development. Its potential as a non-invasive diagnostic tool has been explored in various medical and dental conditions, including skeletal Class II malocclusion. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the correlation between dermatoglyphic patterns and cephalometric angles (SNA and SNB) in Class II skeletal malocclusion to establish a novel diagnostic approach. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 100 participants (aged 18:35 years) diagnosed wi

Association between reduced chewing-induced brain blood flow and cognitive performance in mandibular prognathism patients in a pilot study.

Despite established links between masticatory dysfunction and cognitive impairment, cognitive function in dentofacial deformity patients remains unexplored. This study represents the first comprehensive cognitive assessment in mandibular prognathism (MP) patients. Brain blood flow (BBF) during chewing was measured using functional near-infrared spectroscopy in MP patients versus normal occlusion controls (NORM, n = 17). Cognitive function using eye-tracking technology (Mirudake) in MP patients (n = 44) was compared to healthy controls (HC, n = 59), with assessing six cognitive domains. MP pati

Skeletal stability after sagittal split ramus osteotomy with physiological positioning in patients with skeletal mandibular prognathism and facial asymmetry.

The correction of deformities of the jaw in patients with facial asymmetry is challenging because of the high rate of relapse, which may partly be caused by skeletal interference and inappropriate seating of the condylar head. We evaluated outcomes in 30 patients who were treated by short lingual osteotomy with physiological positioning. Nine had facial symmetry (absolute displacement of the menton<2mm), 14 had minor asymmetry (displacement of >2 to <4mm), and 7 severe asymmetry (displacement of >4mm). The postoperative position of the menton (Me) was stable in each group, but deviated by 3.56

Penetration of inferior alveolar nerve canal increased by bicortical fixation after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy in mandibular prognathism.

The purpose of this three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) study was to identify the difference between monocortical fixation (MCF) and bicortical fixation (BCF) in mandibular canal penetration after bilateral sagittal split osteotomy (BSSO) to correct mandibular prognathism, where interosseous fixation was done by BCF or MCF. CBCT was performed 1 week postoperatively and Dolphin 3D software was used to assess direct penetration of the mandibular canal by either type of screw. The primary outcome variable was the presence or absence of mandibular canal penetration and was categ

Nasal changes after orthognathic surgery for patients with prognathism and Class III malocclusion: analysis using three-dimensional photogrammetry.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Orthognathic surgery alters the position of maxilla and mandible, and consequently changes the nasal shape. The nasal change remains a concern to Asian patients. The aim of this study was to measure the nasal changes using a novel three-dimensional photographic imaging method. METHODS: A total of 38 patients with Class III malocclusion and prognathism were enrolled. All patients underwent two-jaw surgery with the standard technique. A nasal alar cinching suture was included at the end of procedure. Facial landmarks and nasal morphology were defined and measured from pre- a

Craniofacial Changes Related to Maxillary Protraction Therapy in Mandibular Prognathism Associated With a Thyroglossal Duct Cyst: A Case Report.

Mandibular prognathism results from a complex interplay of genetic predisposition and environmental influences. In this study, we aimed to report the successful orthodontic management of a pediatric patient with mandibular prognathism that was potentially associated with a thyroglossal duct cyst in the floor of the mouth. This condition was treated with maxillary protraction therapy to improve the craniofacial morphology. A 9-year-5-month-old male patient presented with a major complaint of an anterior crossbite. Medical history revealed a congenital thyroglossal duct cyst in the floor of the

Orthognathic Surgery as Class III Skeletal Treatment in a 31-Year-Old Female with Mandible Prognathism: A Case Report.

Mandible prognathism or malocclusion skeletal class III is facial deformities. These deformities can affect orofacial function, such as mastication, speech, and function of the temporomandibular joint. Besides the physical effects of these deformities, the psychosocial impact on the individual is often essential, and such deformities can affect the quality of life and self-confidence. Orthognathic surgery is designed to correct these deformities because these deformities could not have been corrected by only orthodontic treatment. Therefore, at Hasan Sadikin General Hospital, orthognathic surg
