Discrepancy in vessel tortuosity measurements of anterior circulation cerebral artery between digital subtraction angiography and magnetic resonance angiography.

OBJECTIVE: Tortuosity in blood vessels is a common angiographic feature that plays a crucial role in hemodynamics and is implicated in systemic diseases such as arterial hypertension and diabetes mellitus. Although studies exist on the relationship between vessel tortuosity and intracranial aneurysms, standard imaging modalities and parameters representing vessel tortuosity are controversial. This study compared vessel tortuosity based on angle measurements using magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and digital subtraction angiography (DSA). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of 85 patients wi

Three dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography in carotid artery surgery: a comparison with digital subtraction angiography.

Three dimensional time-of-flight magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) and intra-arterial digital subtraction angiography (DSA), considered the gold-standard technique, were compared for pre- and postoperative evaluation of the carotid bifurcation. Images of suitable quality of 194 bifurcations were available with both techniques. Percentage stenosis was graded into 5 groups: A = 0-29%, B = 30-59%, C = 60-89%, D = 90-99%, E = 100% (occlusion). Preoperative MRA (126 bifurcations) overgraded the stenosis in 14 cases and undergraded it in 11. The two techniques agreed in 101 cases and the extent o

Aneurysm size and the Windkessel effect: An analysis of contrast intensity in digital subtraction angiography.

Large cerebral aneurysms are considered more dangerous than their smaller counterparts, with higher risk of subarachnoid hemorrhage. Understanding the hemodynamics of large aneurysms has potential to predict their response to treatment. Digital subtraction angiography images for patients with intracranial aneurysms over a seven-year period were reviewed. Unruptured solitary aneurysms of the internal carotid artery (ICA) proximal to the terminus and posterior communicating artery were included. Contrast intensity over time was analyzed at the center of the M1 segment of the middle cerebral arte

Anatomic variations of the celiac trunk and hepatic arterial system with digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Anatomical variation of the abdominal arteries is important. Historic and modern anatomists, radiologists, as well as surgeons have reported and accumulated anatomical variations with a morphological and clinical interest. During graft procurement and reconstruction, accidental injury of the hepatic artery is more likely in the presence of hepatic arterial variation, which can be a common clinical entity. During cadaveric dissection and diagnostic radiological imaging, various types of vascular anomalies are frequently found in human abdominal viscera, especially the celiac tr

Prospective evaluation of carotid artery stenosis: elliptic centric contrast-enhanced MR angiography and spiral CT angiography compared with digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Although digital subtraction angiography (DSA) is the reference standard for assessing carotid arteries, it is uncomfortable for patients and has a small risk of disabling stroke and death. These problems have fueled the use of spiral CT angiography and MR angiography. We prospectively compared elliptic centric contrast-enhanced MR angiography and spiral CT angiography with conventional DSA for detecting carotid artery stenosis. METHODS: Eighty carotid arteries (in 40 symptomatic patients) were assessed. Elliptic centric MR and spiral CT angiographic data were reconstr

Prospective evaluation of suspected stenoocclusive disease of the intracranial artery: combined MR angiography and CT angiography compared with digital subtraction angiography.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: MR angiography is primarily and increasingly used to assess intracranial arterial stenoocclusion. However, MR angiography can cause overestimation of stenosis. Although CT angiography is accurate, it has limitations. Our purpose was to determine whether the accuracy of combined MR angiography and CT angiography is equal to that of digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in measuring stenosis and detecting major intracranial arterial occlusion. METHODS: CT angiography and intraarterial DSA were prospectively performed in 18 patients with suspected intracranial stenoocclus

[Development of a prevention of body movement fixation appliance in leg digital subtraction angiography].

In the peripheral angiography to evaluate blood flow below the knee levels in patients with arteriosclerosis obliterans, a motion artifact occurs as a result of body movements of a patient in normal fixation. This sometimes makes a correct evaluation difficult. Therefore, we developed a fixed appliance which can restrain body movement without affecting image quality and blood flow in digital subtraction angiography of a leg. The appliance is filled with the styrofoam of 1 mm diameter in a sealed bag, after air is aspirated from inside the bag. The appliance is stiffened to fit the shape of the

Computerized analysis of digital subtraction angiography: a tool for quantitative in-vivo vascular imaging.

The purpose of our study was to develop a user-independent computerized tool for the automated segmentation and quantitative assessment of in vivo-acquired digital subtraction angiography (DSA) images. Vessel enhancement was accomplished based on the concept of image structural tensor. The developed software was tested on a series of DSA images acquired from one animal and two human angiogenesis models. Its performance was evaluated against manually segmented images. A receiver's operating characteristic curve was obtained for every image with regard to the different percentages of the image h

Intravenous digital subtraction angiography in the pre-operative evaluation of coarctation of the thoracic aorta.

Many authors have previously advocated the use of intravenous digital subtraction angiography (IV-DSA) in the pre-operative evaluation of coarctation of aorta with excellent results and good surgical correlation. We have studied 20 patients with coarctation of aorta by IV-DSA and compared the angiographic findings with those seen at surgery in nine patients. The IV-DSA examinations were performed by utilizing small-volume (25 ml), bolus injections of an ionic, iodinated water soluble contrast medium delivered in the mid-right atrium. Good quality diagnostic arterial images were obtained in 14

[The supra-aortic blood supply in the Takayasu syndrome determined by digital subtraction angiography].

In a case of Takayasu's aortitis, digital subtraction angiography (DSA) revealed the detailed anatomy of patent intracerebral vessels through intraspinal and cervical collaterals with the only blood supply arising from the left vertebral artery. DSA gives not only anatomical, but also dynamic information, which means the direction of the blood stream is revealed.

[Digital subtraction angiography (DSA) of the renal-adrenal area. Methods of use and indications].

Our experience on 371 patients studied with DSA for reno-adrenal pathology in the last two years is reported. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of real possibilities of DSA in comparison with conventional angiography, particularly to specify diagnostic space of venous versus arterial approach in this region of interest. In our experience, DSA by venous approach is indicated only as a screening method for nefrovascular hypertension or post-surgery, post-PTA and post-embolization controls; in all other cases, DSA by arterial approach is preferable for its superior diagnostic accuracy

Update and trends in venous (VDSA) and arterial (ADSA) digital subtraction angiography in neuroradiology.

After presentation of the principles and technology of digital subtraction angiography the results of 649 investigations with the peripheral venous method are presented and first experiences are discussed critically. In conclusion the method of venous digital subtraction angiography can be stated to be useful for adequate diagnosis of the extracranial brain vessels. Diagnostic statements about the intracranial vessels by venous injection are limited, and therefore a combined investigation including normal angiography remains necessary. In the near future neuroradiological investigations cannot
