Fish Oil Supplementation Enhances Pulmonary Strength and Endurance in Women Undergoing Chemotherapy.

We investigated the effect of fish oil (FO) supplementation, at 4 g/day, on the respiratory performance and blood lipid profile of 32 patients with breast cancer at the beginning of chemotherapy. They were randomized into two groups: control (C) and FO supplemented (S). Both groups underwent three respiratory evaluations and blood harvest (before chemotherapy-Day 0, and 30 and 60 days after supplementation). The S group showed a significant increase in the maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure (P ≤ 0.05 vs. Day 0) and in the maximum voluntary ventilation (P ≤ 0.05). In the treadmill 6-mi

Contribution of respiratory acidosis to diaphragmatic fatigue at exercise.

The factors that may modulate ventilatory muscle fatigue during exercise are controversial. In this study the contribution of acidosis to exercise-induced diaphragmatic fatigue was investigated, using measurements of the twitch mouth pressure response (tw,Pmo) to cervical magnetic stimulation. After learning sessions, 14 healthy subjects performed two cycling tests (at 60% of maximal aerobic power for 16 min), one while breathing spontaneously (mean minute ventilation (V'E) 67.9 L x min(-1)) and the other while hypoventilating voluntarily (mean V'E 53.8 L x min(-1)). Exercise was voluntarily s

Hypercapnia in Advanced Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A Secondary Analysis of the National Emphysema Treatment Trial.

RATIONALE: Hypercapnia develops in one third of patients with advanced chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and is associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Multiple factors in COPD are thought to contribute to the development of hypercapnia including increased carbon dioxide (CO2) production, increased dead space ventilation, and the complex interactions of deranged respiratory system mechanics, inspiratory muscle overload and the ventilatory control center in the brainstem. However, these factors have not previously been systematically analyzed in a large, well-characterized

Influence of respiratory drive on upper airway resistance in normal men.

The variations in nasal and pharyngeal resistance induced by changes in the central inspiratory drive were studied in 10 normal men. To calculate resistances we measured upper airway pressures with two low-bias flow catheters; one was placed at the tip of the epiglottis and the other in the posterior nasopharynx, and we measured flow with a Fleisch no. 3 pneumotachograph connected to a tightly fitting mask. Both resistances were obtained continuously during CO2 rebreathing (Read's method) and during the 2 min after a 1-min voluntary maximal hyperventilation. The inspiratory drive was estimated

Feasibility of a standardized protocol for respiratory training with intermitted positive pressure breathing ventilator application in dysphonia and dysarthria.

BACKGROUND: Brain damage can affect several functions related to speech production leading to dysphonia and dysarthria. Most rehabilitation treatments focus on articulation training rather than on pneumophonic coordination and respiratory muscle strength. Respiratory training using an intermitted positive pressure breathing (IPPB) ventilator can be used for this last purpose; no agreement on a standard protocol has been reached to date. AIM: To evaluate the feasibility and the effectiveness of a standardized incremental protocol of respiratory training using IPPB to treat dysphonia and dysart

Carbon Dioxide Inhalation-Risks for Health or Opportunity for Physical Fitness Development?

Background: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is traditionally regarded as a metabolic by-product; however, growing evidence indicates that it plays an active regulatory role across multiple physiological systems. Acute hypercapnia elicits respiratory, cardiovascular, metabolic, immune, and neurocognitive responses, some of which may transiently influence exercise performance. This narrative review summarizes current evidence on CO2 inhalation in healthy individuals and critically evaluates whether controlled hypercapnia may serve as a targeted stimulus in sport and exercise contexts. Methods: A narrative

Electrophysiological neuromuscular alterations and severe fatigue predict long-term muscle weakness in survivors of COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term weakness is common in survivors of COVID-19-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (CARDS). We longitudinally assessed the predictors of muscle weakness in patients evaluated 6 and 12 months after intensive care unit discharge with in-person visits. METHODS: Muscle strength was measured by isometric maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) of the tibialis anterior muscle. Candidate predictors of muscle weakness were follow-up time, sex, age, mechanical ventilation duration, use of steroids in the intensive care unit, the compound muscle action potential of the tibia

Effects of a rehabilitation program on skeletal muscle function in idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

INTRODUCTION: A majority of patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) display persistent exercise intolerance despite current therapies. Whether a rehabilitation program elicits favorable changes in muscle function which would partly explain improvements in exercise tolerance of IPAH patients remains unknown. We performed this study to assess the effect of a 12-week rehabilitation program on skeletal muscle characteristics and exercise tolerance in patients with IPAH. METHODS: Exercise capacity measured by the 6-minute walk test and by the cycle endurance test (CET), lim
