Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive non-Hodgkin lymphoma occurring commonly in the oral mucosa and jaw of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive adult males. PBL is not a common occurrence in children and a presentation with malignant effusion is rarely reported. Herein, we share our experience in the challenges confronted in the diagnosis of PBL in a 6-year-old, HIV positive boy presenting with malignant pleural and peritoneal effusions along with gum hypertrophy, lymphadenopathy and paranasal sinus mass. Amenability of pleural effusion to exfoliative cytology led to an initial

CONTEXT: Pheochromocytoma is a rare disease but with high mortality if it is not being diagnosed early. Several biochemical tests with high accuracy have been obtained, but the clinical threshold for request of these tests is not determined clearly.
OBJECTIVES: To determine the Likelihood Ratios of clinical symptoms and signs in diagnosing pheochromocytoma. And also meta-analysis of their sensitivity in this disease.
DATA SOURCES: MEDLINE was searched for relevant English-language articles dated 1960 to February 2014. Bibliographies were searched to find additional articles.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) with plasmablastic features that was initially described in the oral cavity of HIV-infected individuals. PBL remains a diagnostic challenge given its close morphologic resemblance and overlapping immunophenotypic patterns to other B-cell lymphoid malignancies and plasmablastic plasma cell myeloma (PCM) with extramedullary involvement. The presence of serum monoclonal protein and radiographic evidence of lytic bone lesions favors the diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma over PBL. Distinguishing PBL from PCM is impor

We report here a series of 16 highly malignant diffuse large B-cell lymphomas of the oral cavity with unique immunohistologic features. Fifteen of these developed in human immunodeficiency virus-positive patients. All cases displayed morphologic features of diffuse large-cell lymphomas but strikingly differed from them in that they showed a minimal or absent expression of the leukocyte common antigen as well as of the B-cell antigen CD20. Instead, the tumor cells showed a constant reaction with the plasma cell characteristic antibody VS38c and a frequent reaction with the CD79a antibody. This,

Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare, aggressive large B cell lymphoma characterized by plasmablastic morphology, terminal B cell (plasma cell) differentiation, frequent loss of conventional B cell markers, and poor clinical outcomes. Although classically associated with immunodeficiency and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection, plasmablastic lymphoma has also been described as an uncommon mechanism of relapse after CD19-directed chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy. We report a 69-year-old man with a remote history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma and subsequen

INTRODUCTION: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive subtype of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. Its transformation from multiple myeloma (MM) is an exceptionally rare event, with only nine cases reported in the literature. Differentiating PBL from plasmablastic myeloma (PBM) is a significant diagnostic challenge due to overlapping morphological and immunophenotypic features, yet it is critical for determining the appropriate treatment regimen.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a woman in her 50s with a seven-year history of kappa-restricted MM who presented with a right l

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic lymphoma is a rare, highly aggressive mature B-cell lymphoma with terminal B-cell/plasma-cell differentiation. It usually arises in the oral cavity in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection or other forms of immunodeficiency, whereas primary sinonasal involvement in an apparently immunocompetent patient is uncommon. On hematoxylin-and-eosin examination, it may histomorphologically resemble poorly differentiated epithelial, melanocytic, and other hematolymphoid malignancies, necessitating a broad immunohistochemical panel for definitive diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive malignancy frequently associated with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and lacking standardized treatment strategies. We developed the PLASMABLAT-001 retrospective cohort to describe treatment patterns and outcomes in PBL.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed 86 patients diagnosed between 2008 and 2023 across six Latin American centers. Overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS) were estimated using the Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox regression models identified prognostic factors.
RESULTS: The cohort

OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical profile and outcome of patients with HIV-associated plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) treated with cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, oncovin, prednisone (CHOP) chemotherapy in a tertiary hospital in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
METHODS: This 12-year retrospective clinical chart review, from 2006 to 2018, of patients with PBL treated with CHOP chemotherapy describes their clinical presentation, complete response (CR), progression-free survival (PFS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Response to salvage chemotherapy was also assessed, as was the overall survival (OS).

In children with underlying Human Immunodeficiency virus infection and AIDS, hematolymphoid cancers, especially non-hodgkin lymphomas are common. Plasmablastic lymphoma is one such non-hodgkin lymphomas arising from the head and neck region (especially sinonasal) but extremely rare. We describe the clinical course in a 4-year-old boy who presented with a solitary bony swelling of the right knee joint, which on diagnostic work-up turned out to be plasmablastic lymphoma. With combination chemotherapy, intrathecal chemotherapy, and early institution ofHighly active anti-retroviral therapy, the ch

We report the case of a 56-year-old male with a history of chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), RAI 0 and Binet Stage A in therapeutic abstention, who presented to the Emergency Department with a two-week history of low abdominal pain and constipation. Physical examination was unremarkable except for mild diffuse abdominal pain on palpation. Laboratory studies revealed lymphocytosis and anemia (Hb: 10.2 g/dl). An abdominal computed tomography (CT) scan showed a partial small bowel obstruction secondary to a proximal ileal neoplasm.

BACKGROUND: Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive subtype of mature B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Given its rarity, there remains a lack of clinicopathological data to guide its management, particularly on Asian patients.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of 10 patients diagnosed with PBL at the National Cancer Centre Singapore and performed a literature review of similar studies on Asian cohorts.
RESULTS: Most patients were male (n = 9), with median age at diagnosis of 55 years (range, 33 - 91 years). Seven (70%) patients were considered to be immunocompromised. In t

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) of the elderly is a rare subtype of B-cell neoplasms. Primary gastric EBV-positive DLBCL of the elderly with partial plasmablastic phenotype is extremely rare. Differentiation of EBV-positive DLBCL of the elderly with partial plasmablastic phenotype from true plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is difficult and very important from the therapeutic and prognostic point of view. Here we report a case of a 59-year-old man with upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The esophagogastroduodenoscopy revealed a 2-cm malignant-appearing non-blee

PURPOSE: Multicentric Castleman disease (MCD) is a distinct lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by inflammatory symptoms, lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly, and cytopenia. Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV), also called human herpesvirus-8 (HHV-8), is the cause of virtually all cases of MCD occurring in patients with HIV infection. MCD lesions characteristically contain HHV-8-infected polyclonal IgMλ plasmablasts. A high frequency of HHV-8-related non-Hodgkin lymphoma has been reported in these patients.

We report a unique case of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS)-associated herpesvirus (KSHV)/human herpesvirus (HHV)8-associated lymphoma in a 56-year-old man with a history of acquired immune deficiency syndrome, Castleman's disease, KS, and idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura. Three months following the diagnosis of KS affecting a left cervical lymph node and Castleman's disease with bone marrow involvement, he presented with a subcutaneous, tender lesion on his left arm. A skin biopsy demonstrated a superficial and deep, interstitial-nodular infiltrate of severely atypical lymphoid cells showing plasmacy

BACKGROUND: Aggressive B-cell lymphomas with plasmablastic morphology are uncommon neoplasms that may exhibit overlapping morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic features of plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) and double-hit lymphoma (DHL). Concurrent IGH::MYC and IGH::BCL2 rearrangements are rarely encountered in this setting, particularly in the testis. Here, we describe an unusual case presenting significant diagnostic challenges at the interface between PBL and DHL.

Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and aggressive form of mature B cell neoplasms almost exclusively identified in patients infected with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The small number of HIV-negative PBL cases reported in the literature to date is composed of single case reports and small case series which characteristically are present involving the oral cavity mucosa or gingiva. We present a 72-year-old HIV-negative Australian patient without any cause of immunodeficiency, with an isolated left maxillary sinus PBL.

Clinical Practice Points. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is a rare and highly aggressive variant of diffuse large B cell lymphoma with median survival of advanced stage patients varying between 6 and 15 months in previous reports. We report here a human immunodeficiency virus-infected patient surviving over 12 years following treatment for advanced PBL with EPOCH chemotherapy and intrathecal therapy. This case highlights the potential for improved survival in PBL with intensive chemotherapy. Further, literature review suggests promising prospects utilizing novel targeted therapies to increase th
