DiffusionTBAD: Rendering CTA images for type B aortic dissection diagnosis.

The success of diffusion models in medical imaging highlights their potential to generate high-quality synthetic datasets that closely resemble real clinical data, addressing limited dataset availability and patient privacy concerns. We present DiffusionTBAD, a novel text-to-image diffusion-based pipeline for synthesizing diagnostically accurate computed tomography angiography (CTA) images of type B aortic dissection (TBAD). Using few-shot learning, DiffusionTBAD fine-tunes a diffusion model guided by textual prompts to capture the distinct features and variability of TBAD cases. The synthetic

Bilateral Information-Guided Diagnosis of Breast Masses in Mammography Using Vision Transformer.

Early-stage breast cancer is often asymptomatic, highlighting the critical role of computer-aided diagnostic(CAD) systems in mammography screening. While radiologists often refer to bilateral symmetry to identify abnormalities, most existing CAD methods analyze unilateral views or require image registration, which limits their ability to model structural heterogeneity and often introduces distortion. To address this, we propose a registration-free, structure-aware diagnostic framework that integrates bilateral mammography with soft spatial prompting via Vision Transformers (ViT). By directly c

Weakly supervised detection of pheochromocytomas and paragangliomas in CT using noisy data.

Pheochromocytomas and Paragangliomas (PPGLs) are rare adrenal and extra-adrenal tumors that have metastatic potential. Management of patients with PPGLs mainly depends on the makeup of their genetic cluster: SDHx, VHL/EPAS1, kinase, and sporadic. CT is the preferred modality for precise localization of PPGLs, such that their metastatic progression can be assessed. However, the variable size, morphology, and appearance of these tumors in different anatomical regions can pose challenges for radiologists. Since radiologists must routinely track changes across patient visits, manual annotation of

One-stage pulmonary nodule detection using 3-D DCNN with feature fusion and attention mechanism in CT image.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in the world. Low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) is a widely used modality in lung cancer detection. The nodule is an abnormal tissue and may evolve into lung cancer. Hence, it is crucial to detect nodules in the early detection stage. However, reviewing the LDCT scans to observe suspicious nodules is a time-consuming task. Recently, designing a computer-aided detection (CADe) system with convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture has been proven that it is helpful for radiologists. Hence, in this stud

CT Window Blending for Evaluation of Multicompartmental Thoracic Pathology.

Standard computed tomography windows are limited in the thorax because they can only display 1 tissue at a time. Computed tomography window blending allows for simultaneous viewing of all 3 tissues in a single image, which may improve evaluation of diseases that contiguously affect multiple compartments. In this article, we use examples to illustrate the utility of window blending in aggressive infections, metastatic cancer, and penetrating trauma.

Full-field breast tomosynthesis.

Breast tomosynthesis is a 3-dimensional (3-D) imaging technology that involves acquiring images of a stationary compressed breast at multiple angles during a short scan. The individual images are then reconstructed into a series of thin high-resolution slices that displayed individually or in a dynamic ciné mode. Tomosynthesis can reduce or eliminate the tissue overlap effect. While holding the breast stationary, images are acquired at a nsumber of different x-ray source angles. Objects at different heights in the breast project differently for each angle. The final step in the tomosynthesis p

Comparison between two packages for pectoral muscle removal on mammographic images.

BACKGROUND: Pectoral muscle removal is a fundamental preliminary step in computer-aided diagnosis systems for full-field digital mammography (FFDM). Currently, two open-source publicly available packages (LIBRA and OpenBreast) provide algorithms for pectoral muscle removal within Matlab environment. PURPOSE: To compare performance of the two packages on a single database of FFDM images. METHODS: Only mediolateral oblique (MLO) FFDM was considered because of large presence of pectoral muscle on this type of projection. For obtaining ground truth, pectoral muscle has been manually segmented by

Automated selection of regions of interest for quantitative analysis of lung textures in digital chest radiographs.

In order to implement a computerized scheme for quantitative analysis of interstitial lung disease in chest radiographs in clinical situations, a fully automated method of selecting many square regions of interest (ROIs) in peripheral lung areas are developed. First, the peripheral lung regions are identified, based on the automated detection of lung apices, ribcage edges, and diaphragm. Then a large number of ROIs are selected sequentially by filling in the identified peripheral regions. Finally, those ROIs containing sharp edges are removed based on an edge gradient analysis, for which a gra

Artifactual Appearance of Thrombosis on Using Metal Artifact Reduction Software Reconstruction in Computed Tomographic Angiography.

The authors attempted to use metal artifact reduction software in 2 computed tomographic angiogram studies to decrease beam hardening. Although the beam hardening artifacts were reduced in the postprocessed images, there was an artifactual appearance of thrombosis in the adjacent arteries in the first case and in the inflow cannula of a left ventricular assist device in the second case. Comparison of the reconstructed images with the original images is therefore essential to avoid a misdiagnosis.

A two-dimensional deformable phantom for quantitatively verifying deformation algorithms.

PURPOSE: The incorporation of deformable image registration into the treatment planning process is rapidly advancing. For this reason, the methods used to verify the underlying deformation algorithms must evolve equally fast. This manuscript proposes a two-dimensional deformable phantom, which can objectively verify the accuracy of deformation algorithms, as the next step for improving these techniques. METHODS: The phantom represents a single plane of the anatomy for a head and neck patient. Inflation of a balloon catheter inside the phantom simulates tumor growth. CT and camera images of th

An efficient dual-domain deep learning network for sparse-view CT reconstruction.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: We develop an efficient deep-learning based dual-domain reconstruction method for sparse-view CT reconstruction with small training parameters and comparable running time. We aim to investigate the model's capability and its clinical value by performing objective and subjective quality assessments using clinical CT projection data acquired on commercial scanners. METHODS: We designed two lightweight networks, namely Sino-Net and Img-Net, to restore the projection and image signal from the DD-Net reconstructed images in the projection and image domains, respectively.

Enhanced Visualization of Pulmonary Structures with a Novel Dual-Ring Static CT System.

Background Conventional helical CT systems are limited by spatial resolution, which can be insufficient to detect subtle pulmonary abnormalities. A novel prototype static CT system with a dual-ring structure and 24 x-ray sources has been developed to enable ultra-high-spatial-resolution lung imaging. Purpose To assess whether static CT improves the visibility of lung structures compared with conventional helical CT and to determine whether enhanced image quality has a diagnostic impact. Materials and Methods In this prospective study approved by the local ethics committee, 30 patients who had

Lung nodule and cancer detection in computed tomography screening.

Fundamental to the diagnosis of lung cancer in computed tomography (CT) scans is the detection and interpretation of lung nodules. As the capabilities of CT scanners have advanced, higher levels of spatial resolution reveal tinier lung abnormalities. Not all detected lung nodules should be reported; however, radiologists strive to detect all nodules that might have relevance to cancer diagnosis. Although medium to large lung nodules are detected consistently, interreader agreement and reader sensitivity for lung nodule detection diminish substantially as the nodule size falls below 8 to 10 mm.

Computed tomography dose optimization.

Use of computed tomography (CT) as a medical diagnostic imaging tool has increased in recent decades because of its technical advances in data acquisition speed and image reconstruction technology. The increased reliance on CT was accompanied by increased patient exposure to ionizing radiation, however, and concerns among radiologic professionals and the public regarding CT dose resulted in increasing attention to dose reduction. Research and education efforts have addressed many of these concerns, and radiologic technologists play a critical role in optimizing image quality and radiation dose

Object-constrained meshless deformable algorithm for high speed 3D nonrigid registration between CT and CBCT.

PURPOSE: High-speed nonrigid registration between the planning CT and the treatment CBCT data is critical for real time image guided radiotherapy (IGRT) to improve the dose distribution and to reduce the toxicity to adjacent organs. The authors propose a new fully automatic 3D registration framework that integrates object-based global and seed constraints with the grayscale-based "demons" algorithm. METHODS: Clinical objects were segmented on the planning CT images and were utilized as meshless deformable models during the nonrigid registration process. The meshless models reinforced a global

An efficient deep learning-based morphology aware hierarchical mixture of features for tuberculosis screening using segmentation of chest X-ray images.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a chronic lung disorder caused by bacterial infection and is a major cause of death. Lung cancer also has a significant impact, and existing solutions concentrate on initial screening, which mainly results in better outcomes at a comparatively lower cost. Screening, particularly by chest X-rays (CXR), is globally recognized as an effective method for reducing lung cancer mortality. Therefore, a precise and initial identification of TB is highly crucial, or else, it threatens lives. In the investigation into cases of TB, CXR images are not only the primary method of diagnos
