Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (TS) is a neurobehavioral disorder. Although the etiology and the pathophysiology of TS are still unknown, the involvement of the basal ganglia has long been postulated. On the other hand, saccadic eye movement was shown to be a useful measure to assess order and disorder of the function of the basal ganglia. To investigate the dysfunction of the basal ganglia of TS, we examined voluntary saccades in children with TS in comparison with the saccades in age-matched control children. Two kinds of saccades, visually-guided saccades (VGS) and memory-guided (MGS) sac

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role right foveal/parafoveal sparing plays in reading single words, word arrays, and eye movement patterns in a single case with an incongruous hemianopia.
METHODS: The patient, a 48-year-old right handed male with a macular sparing hemianopia in his left eye and a macular splitting hemianopia in his right eye, performed various reading tasks. Single word reading speeds were monitored using a "voice-trigger" system. Eye movements were recorded while reading three passages of text, and PET data were gathered while the subject performed a variety of reading tasks i

In order to study the relation between genotype and phenotype, a detailed study of the course of oculomotor deficits was performed in three patients with autosomal-dominant cerebellar ataxia, subtype spinocerebellar atrophy type 1 (SCA 1) using clinical testing and electrooculography. DNA analysis revealed a CAG repeat expansion of 65 in the SCA 1 gene on chromosome 6p in all patients. A progressive disorder of the saccadic system became obvious, leading to a marked slowing of saccadic eye movements and loss of pathological and physiological nystagmus. An upward gaze palsy developed early, fol

Observers use smooth pursuit to track moving objects-like koi carp gliding through a pond. When positional errors accumulate, rapid catch-up saccades correct for them. Despite their abruptness, these saccades usually go unnoticed, creating the seamless experience of smooth tracking. We conducted three experiments to examine awareness and control of catch-up saccades (Experiment 1), the effect of training (Experiment 2), and of movement intention (Experiment 3). All experiments followed a similar protocol. On each trial, a target moved horizontally at one of three constant speeds (3-12 dva/s).

OBJECTIVES: Catch-up saccades help to compensate for loss of gaze stabilization during rapid head rotation in case of vestibular deficit. While overt saccades observed after head rotation are obviously visually guided, some of these catch-up saccades occur with shorter latency while the head is still moving, anticipating the needed final eye position. These covert saccades seem to be generated based on the integration of multisensory inputs. Vision could be one of these inputs, but the known delay for triggering visually guided saccades questions this possibility. The main objective of this st

Anecdotal oculomotor disturbances have been described in spastic paraplegia type 7 (SPG7). We investigated oculomotor and vestibular dysfunction in five patients with genetically verified SPG7. All five patients exhibited significantly slower velocities of vertical saccades compared to controls, but significantly faster than in progressive supranuclear palsy, with upward saccades being particularly affected. Horizontal saccades, cerebellar oculomotor markers, and vestibuloocular reflex seem to be variably affected. Thus, albeit subclinical in some cases, slowing of the vertical saccades may be

It has been claimed that saccades arising from the three saccade triggering modes-stimulus-driven, endogenous mandatory and 'free choice'-are driven by distinct mechanisms. We tested this claim by instructing observers to saccade from a white or black fixation disc to a same polarity (white or black) disc flashed for 100 or 200 ms presented either alone (Exo), or together with an opposite (Endo) or same (EndoFC) polarity disc (blocked and mixed sessions). Target(s) and distractor were presented at three inter-stimulus intervals (ISIs) relative to the fixation offset (ISI: -200, 0, +200 ms) and

The cerebellum is critically involved in the adaptation mechanisms that maintain the accuracy of goal-directed acts such as saccadic eye movements. Two categories of saccades, each relying on different adaptation mechanisms, are defined: reactive (externally triggered) saccades and voluntary (internally triggered) saccades. The contribution of the medio-posterior part of the cerebellum to reactive saccades adaptation has been clearly demonstrated, but the evidence that other parts of the cerebellum are also involved is limited. Moreover, the cerebellar substrates of voluntary saccades adaptati

In a natural environment, saccade and vergence eye movements shift gaze in different directions and distances. In a laboratory setting, targets can be positioned precisely to elicit symmetrical vergence movements; however, saccades occur during the vergence movement even though the stimulus should not stimulate a saccadic response. These saccades may facilitate the response when the kinematics of the vergence component are modest as indicated by reduced velocities. Hence, the purpose of this study is to assess whether the frequency of saccades within vergence responses are correlated with verg

In amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), eye movements are usually preserved even after the long-term use of respirators. The present study evaluated a 57-year-old male patient who showed clinical findings compatible with ALS but exhibited disorders of eye movements before he needed to be on an artificial respiration system. The patient had noted clumsiness and weakness in all extremities 5 years before presentation of abnormal eye movements. The results of electromyography and muscle biopsy were compatible with ALS. However, supranuclear vertical gaze palsy and slow saccades are seen. The pres

A multitude of cognitive functions can easily be tested by a number of relatively simple saccadic eye movement tasks. This approach has been employed extensively with patient populations to investigate the functional deficits associated with psychiatric disorders. Neurophysiological studies in non-human primates performing the same tasks have begun to provide us with insights into the neural mechanisms underlying many cognitive functions. Here, we review studies that have investigated single neuron activity in the superior colliculus (see glossary), frontal eye field, supplementary eye field,

We studied eye movements and brainstem pathology in 2 patients with slow vertical saccades and autopsy-proven amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In both patients, the main ocular motor finding was supranuclear vertical gaze impairment with slow vertical saccades. The second patient had difficulty opening his eyes on command, with preserved spontaneous eyelid opening. Postmortem examination in both patients demonstrated cell loss in the rostral interstitial nucleus of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF) and substantia nigra, along with histopathological findings consistent with ALS. BACKGROUND: Under normal conditions, there are no torsional eye movements during voluntary saccades when the head is stationary (Listing's law).
METHODS AND RESULTS: Using dual search coils for three dimensional eye movement recordings, a patient is reported who had direction specific rapid deviations of torsional eye position (up to 10.5 degrees) during voluntary saccades followed by a slow exponential torsional drift after the end of the saccade ("blip") towards the initial torsional eye position. In the absence of spontaneous nystagmus, this transient torsion means a violation of Listing's

Disconjugate (different in the two eyes) oculomotor adaptation is driven by the need to maintain binocular vision. Since binocular vision is deficient in strabismus, we wondered whether oculomotor disconjugate adaptive capabilities are deficient in such subjects. We studied eight adult subjects with constant, long-standing convergent strabismus of variable angles (4-30 prism D). No subject had severe amblyopia. Binocular vision was evaluated with stereoacuity tests. Two subjects had peripheral binocular vision and gross stereopsis; two other subjects had abnormal retinal correspondence and abn

Intercepting a moving target requires prediction: knowing the current position is not enough due to sensorimotor delays. A moving "vortex" stimulus, which lacks a conventional velocity signal for smooth pursuit yet still elicits accurate saccade targeting, was used here to assess whether it also supports accurate reaching movements. In our experiments, participants reached to the vortex or to a rigid moving disk. Three manipulations probed prediction and online control: constant-speed interception, speed perturbations at reach onset, and target disappearance at reach onset. Reaction times when

Human gaze behaviour provides insights into the mental processes underlying the execution of a task. As reading involves visual sampling and language processing, various studies investigate how the linguistic information of texts influences visual behaviour. However, established measures of human visual behaviour are dependent on the exact configuration of the text stimuli and the nonlinguistic stimuli used for comparison, leaving systematic stimulus-independent differences largely unknown. Here, we show that relative saccade length distributions reveal similarities and differences in gaze dyn

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is one of the most prevalent and disabling symptoms of multiple sclerosis (MS), frequently showing weak correlation with physical disability or MRI lesion burden. Central activation models link fatigue to dysfunction of brainstem arousal pathways, particularly the Ascending Reticular Activating System (ARAS). Because vertical saccades are generated in the mesencephalon and interact with these arousal networks, they may provide an objective marker of central fatigue.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the relationship between vertical saccadic parameters and fatigue severity in MS, adj

BACKGROUND: Anatomical studies have indicated that the brain and the heart are connected through multiple pathways. However, the functional interplay between them is unclear, especially for different task states. This study explored the brain-heart interplay under reflexive and voluntary saccade tasks.
METHODS: The Synthetic Data Generation model was used to quantify the interplay between the brain and heart.
RESULTS: Bidirectional interplay patterns were found between the brain and heart under different frequency bands for the two types of saccade task. There were significant variations in
