[Role of vitamins in the prevention of atherosclerosis].

Persons doing brain work and taking aerovit in three courses of 30 days each with intervals of 5-6 months were kept under observation over a period of 13-15 months. While improving the vitamin allowance the course-wise taking of aerovit helped normalize the lipids metabolism factors characterizing an increased predisposition to atherosclerosis, the favourable effect being traced for 4-5 months after discontinuance of the preparation ingestion. Repeated courses contributed to a further improvement of the lipoid metabolism. A tendency towards positive changes in the tonicity of the intracranial

Interactions of vitamins and gut microbiota in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Good nutritional status in early life is vital for neurodevelopment, but eating disorders like picky eating heighten risks of nutritional imbalance and dysbiosis. Dysregulated gut microbiomes are increasingly linked to gastrointestinal issues and neurodevelopmental disorders. Vitamin deficiency may aggravate these conditions, emphasizing the need for focused nutritional care. The gut microbiota plays a key role in brain function and development, offering potential as a therapeutic target. At present, supplementation of probiotics, prebiotics, vitamins and other nutrients is presumed to produce

Roles of vitamins and nutrition in obstructive sleep apnea.

INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is the most common sleep-related breathing disorder, with a prevalence that rises alongside with the increasing prevalence of obesity. OSA is characterized by a low-inflammatory state and is followed by cardiovascular and metabolic sequelae. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) represents the cornerstone of treatment for severe OSA. However, poor compliance with CPAP treatment renders OSA treatment a challenging venture. Weight loss and exercise are recommended as adjunctive treatment options for OSA. Several diets have proven to facilitate wei

Concerning the debate about homocysteine, B vitamins, and dementia.

It is important to identify modifiable risk factors for dementia and to introduce policies to implement their modification. The Lancet Commission on Dementia Prevention, Intervention and Care failed to identify raised plasma homocysteine as a risk factor, despite considerable evidence; hence there is a need for a debate on this matter.

The Role of Vitamins in Sepsis: A Narrative Review.

Sepsis remains one of the major challenges in modern intensive care, characterized by high mortality and complex metabolic and immunological disturbances. Given the limited effectiveness of current therapeutic strategies, increasing attention has been directed toward supportive interventions aimed at restoring metabolic homeostasis. Particular interest has been focused on selected vitamins that exhibit pleiotropic biological effects. Thus, we summarized the current evidence on the role of selected vitamins (C, D, B1, B9, B12) in the treatment and supportive management of sepsis, highlighting t

The Multitarget Action of Vitamins in the Ischemic Stroke.

A stroke, also known as a cerebral hemorrhage, occurs when there is an interruption in the blood supply to a part of the brain, resulting in damage to brain cells. This issue is one of the leading causes of death in developed countries, currently killing about 5 million people annually. Individuals who survive ischemic stroke often face serious vision problems, paralysis, dementia, and other sequelae. The numerous efforts to prevent and/or treat stroke sequelae seem insufficient, which is concerning given the increasing global elderly population and the well-known association between aging and

Vitamins and fatty acids against chemotherapy-induced intestinal mucositis.

Chemotherapy has allowed an increase in cancer survivorship, but it causes important adverse effects. Mucositis affecting the gastrointestinal tract is one of the main problems acutely caused by many antineoplastic drugs, such as 5-fluorouracil or methotrexate. Mucositis may cause pain, diarrhea, anorexia, weight loss, systemic infections and even death. This narrative review focuses on intestinal mucositis and the role that some nutraceuticals, namely vitamins (both lipid- and water-soluble) as well as fatty acids (FAs) and lipid-based products, can have in it. In preclinical (cell cultures,

Parkinson's disease and vitamins: a focus on vitamin B12.

Parkinson's disease (PD) has been linked to a vast array of vitamins among which vitamin B12 (Vit B12) is the most relevant and often investigated specially in the context of intrajejunal levodopa infusion therapy. Vit B12 deficiency, itself, has been reported to cause acute parkinsonism. Nevertheless, concrete mechanisms through which B12 deficiency interacts with PD in terms of pathophysiology, clinical manifestation and progression remains unclear. Recent studies have suggested that Vit B12 deficiency along with the induced hyperhomocysteinemia are correlated with specific PD phenotypes cha

The Role of Vitamins in Neurodegenerative Disease: An Update.

Acquiring the recommended daily allowance of vitamins is crucial for maintaining homeostatic balance in humans and other animals. A deficiency in or dysregulation of vitamins adversely affects the neuronal metabolism, which may lead to neurodegenerative diseases. In this article, we discuss how novel vitamin-based approaches aid in attenuating abnormal neuronal functioning in neurodegeneration-based brain diseases such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and Prion disease. Vitamins show their therapeutic activity in Parkinson's dise

Vitamins in cell culture media: Stability and stabilization strategies.

Nowadays, chemically defined cell culture media (CCM) have replaced serum- and hydrolysate-based media that rely on complex ingredients, such as yeast extracts or peptones. Benefits include a significantly lower lot-to-lot variability, more efficient manufacturing by reduction to essential components, and the ability to exclude components that may negatively influence growth, viability, or productivity. Even though current chemically defined CCMs provide an excellent basis for various mammalian biotechnological processes, vitamin instabilities are known to be a key factor contributing to the v

Scurvy in an alcoholic patient treated with intravenous vitamins.

Vitamin C deficiency is rare in developed countries but there is an increased prevalence in chronic alcohol abusers. In the UK, it is common practice to treat patients with chronic alcoholism who are admitted to hospital with intravenous vitamins B1, B2, B3, B6 and C for 2-3 days, followed by oral thiamine and vitamin B-compound tablets. This is a case of a 57-year-old man with a history of chronic alcoholism and chronic obstructive lung disease who was admitted to the intensive care unit for pneumonia requiring ventilatory support. He was given high doses of intravenous vitamins B1, B2, B3, B

[Effect of some vitamins on activity of immunocompetent cells].

The content of vitamins A, E, B1, B2, B6 in lymphocytes and serum of blood was studied with simultaneous determination of CD3+, CD5+, CD4+, CD8+, CD16+, CD25+, CD71+, CD95+, and HLADR+ populations. According to cellular immunity response, patients were divided into two groups--with physiological norm and deficiency. It was established that, irrespective of the group, the content of vitamins A, E, B6 in blood serum does not change, while the concentration of B1 and B2 in the group with physiological norm is greater than that in the group with deficiency. In the group with deficiency of cellular

Interventions with vitamins B6, B12 and C in pregnancy.

The water-soluble vitamins B6, B12 and C play important roles in maternal health as well as fetal development and physiology during gestation. This systematic review evaluates the risks and benefits of interventions with vitamins B6, B12 and C during pregnancy on maternal, neonatal and child health and nutrition outcomes. Relevant publications were identified by searching PubMed, Popline and Web of Science databases. Meta-analyses were conducted for outcomes where results from at least three controlled trials were available. Potential benefits of vitamin B6 supplementation were reduction in na

Vitamins for the first 1000 days: preparing for life.

Vitamins are essential nutrients for many body functions and particularly important during growth. Adequate supply in pregnancy and in early infancy is therefore crucial, but there is still a lack of knowledge about the needed amounts of vitamins of children older than six months and also during pregnancy. Recommendations for intake levels are generally derived by extrapolation from data for infants based in turn on the contents in breast milk and those for adults. A vitamin of particular importance in pregnancy is folic acid due to its role in the development of the brain and nerve system and
