Hierarchical syntactic processing is beyond mere associating: Functional magnetic resonance imaging evidence from a novel artificial grammar.

Grammar is central to any natural language. In the past decades, the artificial grammar of the An Bn type in which a pair of associated elements can be nested in the other pair was considered as a desirable model to mimic human language syntax without semantic interference. However, such a grammar relies on mere associating mechanisms, thus insufficient to reflect the hierarchical nature of human syntax. Here, we test how the brain imposes syntactic hierarchies according to the category relations on linearized sequences by designing a novel artificial "Hierarchical syntactic structure-building

Association of ictal aphasia with hypoperfusion in language areas in temporal lobe epilepsy patients.

Ictal clinical phenomenology, including aphasia, is usually associated with increased regional cerebral perfusion. We present an unusual pattern of ictal cerebral perfusion in three patients with pharmacoresistant, lesional temporal lobe epilepsy and ictal/postictal aphasia studied with prolonged video-EEG, ictal, and interictal SPECT and MRI for pre-surgical evaluation. Subtraction of ictal-interictal SPECT images co-registered with MRI (SISCOM) showed ictal hyperperfusion in the temporal epileptogenic area in all patients. In addition, hypoperfusion of Broca's area in one case, Wernicke's ar

Difference in Cortical Modulation of Walking between Persons with Multiple Sclerosis and Healthy Controls: An EEG pilot study.

The overall goal of this study is to investigate the role of parietal cortex in the control of walking in persons with Multiple Sclerosis (pwMS). We examined within-brain connectivity and cortico-muscular connectivity as pwMS and healthy control (HC) participants walked on an instrumented treadmill. Cortical activity was collected using EEG, muscle activity was collected using wireless EMG modules, and gait data were obtained by using the instrumented treadmill. Results show significant activation of sensorimotor and posterior parietal cortex during walking in both groups. Connectivity between

What letters can "learn" from Arabic digits--fMRI-controlled single case therapy study of peripheral agraphia.

Research on (hand-)writing has revealed that Exner's area subserves transferring linguistic impulses into writing programmes. We report on a patient with a lesion affecting Broca's and Exner's area suffering from severe peripheral agraphia for letters but not for Arabic digits. Analogous to semantic (magnitude) information in numbers, we developed a specifically tailored writing training: additional mental imagery based semantic information was attached to letters. The training resulted in significant improvements. Imaging data revealed stronger fronto-parietal network activity including peril

Hallucinating schizophrenia patients have longer left arcuate fasciculus fiber tracks: a DTI tractography study.

The arcuate fasciculus (AF) has been implicated in the pathology behind schizophrenia and auditory verbal hallucinations (AVHs). White matter tracts forming the arcuate fasciculus can be quantified and visualized using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) tractography. Although there have been a number of studies on this topic, the results have been conflicting. Studying the underlying white matter structure of the AF could shed light on the constrains for interaction between temporal and frontal language areas in AVHs. The participants were 66 patients with a schizophrenia diagnosis, where AVHs wer

Interhemispheric compensation: a hypothesis of TMS-induced effects on language-related areas.

Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) applied over brain regions responsible for language processing is used to curtail potentially auditory hallucinations in schizophrenia patients and to investigate the functional organisation of language-related areas. Variability of effects is, however, marked across studies and between subjects. Furthermore, the mechanisms of action of rTMS are poorly understood. Here, we reviewed different factors related to the structural and functional organisation of the brain that might influence rTMS-induced effects. Then, by analogy with aphasia studi

Clinical and imaging progression over 10 years in a patient with primary progressive apraxia of speech and autopsy-confirmed corticobasal degeneration.

Primary progressive apraxia of speech (PPAOS) is a neurodegenerative disorder in which AOS is the sole presenting complaint. We report clinical and neuroimaging data spanning 10 years from disease onset-to-death in a 49 year-old male PPAOS patient, DY, who died with corticobasal degeneration. He presented with AOS with normal neuroimaging. Abnormalities in the caudate nucleus, supplementary motor area, cingulate, insula, and Broca's area were observed after five years, with involvement of motor cortex and development of agrammatism, Parkinsonism, and dysarthria three years later. Cognitive imp

Diffusion tensor imaging magnetic resonance imaging (DTI-MRI) helps to tailor speech therapy: A case report with a short narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Stroke has functional sequelae, including motor weakness, spasticity, dysphagia, and neurogenic bladder deteriorating activities of daily living. Speech therapy is more often an essential part of the rehabilitation program. Studies in aphasia have primarily focused on two major pathways: the arcuate fasciculus and the superior longitudinal fasciculus. The arcuate fasciculus is a major fiber bundle connecting Broca's area (associated with language production) and Wernicke's area (associated with language comprehension). Damage to this pathway can result in different types of aphasia

Comparative analysis of FMRFamide-like immunoreactivity in caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) brains.

The distribution of FMRFamide (FMRFa)-like peptides in caiman (Caiman crocodilus) and turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans) brains was studied by immunohistochemistry. In both species, distinct groups of FMRFa-like immunoreactive (ir) perikarya were present in the medial septal nucleus, accumbens nucleus, nucleus of the diagonal band of Broca, suprachiasmatic area, lateral hypothalamic area, and periventricular hypothalamic nucleus. A few FMRFa-ir neurons in the hypothalamic area were located in the neuroepithelial cell lining of the third ventricle. FMRFa-ir fibers were scattered in all major ar

The neuroanatomy of pure apraxia of speech in stroke.

The left insula or Broca's area have been proposed as the neuroanatomical correlate for apraxia of speech (AOS) based on studies of patients with both AOS and aphasia due to stroke. Studies of neurodegenerative AOS suggest the premotor area and the supplementary motor areas as the anatomical correlates. The study objective was to determine the common infarction area in patients with pure AOS due to stroke. Patients with AOS and no or equivocal aphasia due to ischemic stroke were identified through a pre-existing database. Seven subjects were identified. Five had pure AOS, and two had equivocal

Inner speech-related brain areas mapped using a novel rhyming task.

INTRODUCTION: The brain functional correlates of phonological encoding have been examined by means of tasks requiring silent articulation, in many cases utilizing judgments of whether two words rhyme or not. However, most studies have employed written stimuli, which may not be appropriate in languages with transparent orthography (e.g. Spanish), and control tasks have often been less than ideal for functional imaging purposes. We aimed to identify brain activations during phonological encoding using a visual rhyming judgment task that minimized reading-related confounds, and we employed a nove

Distinct neural substrates of affective distress and communicative disability in head and neck cancer: A cross-sectional 18F-FDG PET study.

BACKGROUND: Head and neck cancer (HNC) threatens communication through its impact on voice and speech. The neural systems linking depressive symptoms with perceived voice handicap remain poorly characterized. We examined whether these symptom domains show dissociable associations with regional brain metabolism. METHODS: In this cross-sectional 18F-FDG PET, we studied 63 HNC patients following diagnosis. Regional glucose metabolism (standardized uptake value ratios) was quantified in a priori regions of interest: Broca's area, Wernicke's area, left and right insula, and bilateral hippocampus.

High-Definition Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation Improves Verb Recovery in Aphasic Patients Depending on Current Intensity.

High-definition transcranial direct current stimulation (HD-tDCS) is a variant of tDCS, which produces more focal stimulation, delimiting brain current flow to a defined region compared to conventional tDCS. To date, only one study has been conducted to investigate HD-tDCS effects on language recovery in aphasia. Here, we aimed to assess the effects of cathodal HD-tDCS on verb naming by comparing two current intensities: 1 vs 2 mA. In a double-blinded cross over study, two groups of 10 aphasic individuals were submitted to active cathodal HD-tDCS and sham stimulation over the right homolog of

fMRI evaluation of hemispheric language dominance using various methods of laterality index calculation.

Several functional MR imaging studies evaluating the lateralisation of linguistic functions in patients who underwent Wada testing have been reported. There is extensive variance in the Laterality index (LI) calculation across the studies, and the optimal calculation method remains unclear. We attempted to calculate the LI in different ways in the same subjects, in order to find the LI calculation method with the highest correlation to the Wada test. Fifteen patients (10 females, 5 males) suffering from medically intractable temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) (12 left, 3 right) were admitted for the

[Language and aphasias].

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Approximately 400,000 years ago men started to use language. Initially it was probably poor with few phonemes. With social evolution it became more complex, with the appearance of new phonemes and a more complete grammatical structure. The current concept of the processing of language dates, with little change, from the nineteenth century. DEVELOPMENT: With the birth of phrenology language began to be studied. This lead to the hypothesis of Wernicke, with two main areas joined by the fasciculo arcuato, which is still held to be valid with modifications by Gerchwind

Data on the sites of the stimulatory feedback action of gonadal steroids indispensable for follicle-stimulating hormone release in the rat.

The sites of the stimulatory feedback action of gonadal steroids on FSH release were examined in estrogen-primed ovariectomized rats. Estradiol benzoate (E2) injected 72 h after E2 priming induced a significant increase in serum FSH 6 and 30 h later. However, injections of estrone failed to induce a similar significant increase. Progesterone (P) injections also increased serum FSH 6 h later. Horizontal sections placed above the medial preoptic area prevented the increase in serum FSH after E2 injections but not after P injections. Furthermore, retrochiasmatic sections or bilateral lesions in t

Reduced Cortical Thickness in the Temporal Pole, Insula, and Pars Triangularis in Patients with Panic Disorder.

PURPOSE: Recent neuroimaging findings have revealed that paralimbic and prefrontal regions are involved in panic disorder (PD). However, no imaging studies have compared differences in cortical thickness between patients with PD and healthy control (HC) subjects. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-seven right-handed patients with PD who met the diagnostic criteria in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-4th edition-text revision, and 30 HC subjects were enrolled. We used the FreeSurfer software package for estimating the cortical thickness of regions of interest, including the

Relating selective brain damage to impairments with voicing contrasts.

Research is reviewed concerning the performance of several neurological groups on the perception and production of voicing contrasts in speech. Patients with cerebellar damage, Parkinson's disease, specific language impairment, Broca's aphasia, apraxia, and Wernicke's aphasia have been reported to be impaired in the perception and articulation of voicing. The types of deficits manifested by these neurologically impaired groups in creating and discriminating voicing contrasts are discussed and the respective contributions of separate neural areas are identified. A model is presented specifying

[Mutism in central motor disorders--a review of the literature].

Mutism can be defined as "a condition in which there is no, or very little, oral-verbal expression, whereas comprehension of speech ... is normal or at least at a considerably higher level" (Lebrun, 1990). Benson (1979) enumerates five neuroanatomical correlates of mutism: (a) damage to the Broca region, (b) lesion of the supplementary motor area of the dominant hemisphere, (c) dysfunction of the mesencephalic reticular system, (d) thalamotomy, and (e) bilateral pathology of cortical and subcortical motor structures. The last item refers to syndromes of mutism resulting from central motor diso
