Preliminary Application of a Continuous Functional Contrast Visual Acuity System in the Assessment of Visual Function in Dry Eye Patients.

PURPOSE: To investigate the feasibility and efficacy of a continuous functional contrast visual acuity (CFCVA) system in the assessment of visual function in dry eye disease (DED). METHODS: Twenty patients with DED and 15 normal controls were recruited. Subjective symptoms were evaluated using the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaire, and tear film stability was assessed by a noninvasive corneal topographer. Under natural blinking conditions, the custom-built CFCVA system was used to take serial visual acuity measurements at 100%, 25%, 10%, and 5% contrast for 60 seconds. A 5-min

The "gift of love" as a candidate mechanism of psychopathology and change in interpersonal reconstructive therapy for patients with high-acuity clinical needs.

A key mechanism of psychopathology and change proposed by the theory of interpersonal reconstructive therapy (IRT; Benjamin, 2003, 2018) is termed the "gift of love" (GOL). The GOL hypothesis is that wishes to receive love and acceptance from specific internalized attachment figures shape and maintain problem patterns and their associated symptoms for many patients across a wide range of psychopathology. According to IRT theory, optimal intervention is defined by therapist alignment, or "adherence," to a core algorithm of principles that are tailored individually and bring awareness to (a) att

The taste of trigeminal sensations: relation between taste, lingual tactile acuity, and spicy perception in patients with taste dysfunction.

In the oral cavity, oral stereognosis and chemesthesis refer to the abilities to recognize shapes and detect noxious substances, respectively, through various receptors distributed on the tongue. The absence of standardized methods to assess oral somatosensory perception has led to a lack of consensus regarding the relationship between taste and trigeminal sensations. While some studies reported lower trigeminal perception in taste disorders, others did not confirm this correlation. To analyze somatosensation in quantitative and qualitative taste problems, 28 patients (21 females, mean age 59.

Visual acuity in patients with non-functioning pituitary adenoma: Prognostic factors and long-term outcome after surgery.

BACKGROUND: Visual acuity (VA) and visual field defects (VF) are evaluated in the preoperative management of non-functioning pituitary adenoma (NFPA). The former is less studied than the latter. RESEARCH QUESTION: To analyze preoperative factors, including adenoma volumetry, associated with reduced VA and postoperative improvement of VA over five years after surgery. METHODS: Eighty-seven patients who had primary surgery for NFPA were retrospectively reviewed. Eyes were categorized by best/worse preoperative VA. Ophthalmology review was performed before surgery, at three months, one to two y

High-Pass Visual Acuity Loss and Macular Structure-Function Relationship in Patients With Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma.

PURPOSE: The Logarithm of the Minimum Angle of Resolution (logMAR) chart is the most common clinical test for assessing central visual function in glaucoma. However, based on the use of these charts, visual acuity (VA) often remains normal even when severe macular damage exists. Here, we aim to investigate the potential advantages of high-pass VA in detecting glaucoma compared with conventional VA. METHODS: Monocular best-corrected VA measurements were compared for a novel high-pass electronic VA chart (e-chart) and a conventional e-chart in 113 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients wit
