The role of pediatric maxillary expansion on nasal breathing. A systematic review and metanalysis.

OBJECTIVE: A reduced transversal dimension of the maxilla leads to narrower nasal cavities, which may reduce airflow to the lungs. Maxillary expansion widens nasal floor. However, there is huge controversy regarding whether this increase does actually lead to increased airflow. In this systematic review and meta-analysis we aim to resolve this question by evaluating studies that have undertaken rhinomanometric measurements. REVIEW METHODS: Pubmed (Medline), the Cochrane Library, EMBASE and Trip Database were checked by two authors. Two authors extracted the data. Main outcome was expressed as

[The effect of submucosal diathermy to the inferior turbinates on nasal airway resistance].

OBJECTIVE: The main purpose of the study is to observe the effect of submucosal diathermy to the inferior turbinates on nasal airway resistance (NAR). METHOD: Using active anterior rhinomanometry, NAR were measured in seventeen patients who suffered from chronic rhinitis before and post operation. The subjective impression of their nasal patency was assessed using a 10-point scale. RESULT: The NAR is(0.662 +/- 0.22) kPa.s/L before operation and (0.302 +/- 0.17) kPa.s/L three months after operation. The NAR is 0.397 +/- 0.25 ten months after operation. The differences are statistically signif

Evaluation of threshold criteria for the nasal histamine challenge test in perennial allergic rhinitis.

Nasal reactivity to histamine was determined in patients with perennial allergic rhinitis and in control subjects. A histamine titration method delivered by a metered dose pump was used. Stuffiness, itching, and the number of sneezes were recorded, nasal secretions measured, and nasal airway resistance was recorded by active anterior rhinomanometry. Increased nasal reactivity to histamine was observed among rhinitic patients and inversely correlated with the severity of nasal symptoms. A 3-fold increase of post-saline nasal airway resistance (NAR) best differentiated the nasal responses to his

Increased nasal breathing decreases snoring and improves oxygen saturation during sleep apnoea.

For many years ENT-specialists have performed surgery to create a good air passage in patients with different kinds of nasal deformities. When having a blocked nose one realizes the importance of being able to breathe through the nose. By moving the nasal wings aside with the fingers, or the medical device Nozovent, most people experience that it is easier to breathe through the nose than ever before, which can also be shown with rhinomanometry. When it is easier to inhale there is less energy in the air passing the palate which means less risk for vibrations creating snoring sounds. In differ

Nasal challenge with serotonin and histamine in normal persons.

In order to study the nasal response to serotonin, 14 normal persons, in a double-blind study, were provoked in the nose with serotonin and histamine. Itching and the number of sneezes were noted, the amount of secretion measured, and nasal airway resistance recorded by active posterior rhinomanometry. Serotonin induced significant nasal itching, sneezing and hypersecretion, similar to the effects of histamine. The effect of serotonin on nasal airway resistance, on the other hand, was slight (+ 10%) and insignificant in contrast to that of histamine in equipotent doses (+ 48%) (P less than 0.0

Quantifying the Domino Effect of Septoplasty on Eustachian Tube Function and Nasal Resistance in Patients With Chronic Otitis Media: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Background Eustachian tube dysfunction is characterized by insufficient dilation, leading to secondary pathologies in the middle ear. By comparing pre- and post-operative grades of Eustachian tube function and nasal resistance measurements, this study seeks to determine if septoplasty can improve Eustachian tube function in cases where nasal septal deviation is likely to cause mechanical dysfunction. We also aim to validate the Jain Bhalerao endoscopic classification of nasal septal deviation by assessing its utility in identifying septal deviations at a higher risk of causing Eustachian tube

Upper airway effective compliance during wakefulness and sleep in obese adolescents studied via two-dimensional dynamic MRI and semiautomated image segmentation.

Novel biomarkers of upper airway biomechanics may improve diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS). Upper airway effective compliance (EC), the slope of cross-sectional area versus pressure estimated using computational fluid dynamics (CFD), correlates with apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) and critical closing pressure (Pcrit). The study objectives are to develop a fast, simplified method for estimating EC using dynamic MRI and physiological measurements and to explore the hypothesis that OSAS severity correlates with mechanical compliance during wakefulness and sleep. Five obese childre

Modified Extracorporeal Septoplasty: Functional Results at 6-Year Follow-up.

BACKGROUND: Septal deviations represent a major cause of aesthetic disorders and respiratory obstruction. The traditional septoplasty techniques may often be inadequate to treat severe deviations. Recently, we described a modified extracorporeal septoplasty approach based on partial resection of the cartilaginous septum, with preservation of a superocaudal L-strut measuring approximately 0.5 cm in height. At 6-month follow-up, we demonstrated this technique to be functionally and aesthetically effective in addressing mild to severe septal deviation. The aim of the present study was to evaluate

Age and gender effects on nasal respiratory function in normal subjects.

One hundred and ninety-seven normal individuals between the ages of 5 and 73 years were evaluated to determine nasal resistance, nasal cross-sectional area, and respiratory mode during quiet breathing. Subjects were categorized into three age groups. Nasal resistance and respiratory mode were directly determined using posterior rhinomanometry and the SNORT technique, respectively. Nasal cross-sectional area was estimated using the hydrokinetic equation. Results indicated significant effects of age on all variables; significant gender differences were found for respiratory mode. Weak correlatio

Relationship between rhinitis duration and response to nasal decongestion test.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Nasal obstruction depends on allergic inflammation. Decongestion tests evaluate the reversibility of nasal airflow limitation. It has been previously reported that duration of persistent allergic rhinitis (PER) may involve important functional consequences. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of the duration of rhinitis on the response to nasal decongestion test in a cohort of patients with PER. METHODS: A total of 312 patients with moderate-severe PER were prospectively and consecutively evaluated: 234 males and 78 females, mean age 23.6 years. A detail

[Perennial rhinitis: antihistaminic and anti-inflammatory treatment].

The use of various medications in chronic rhinitis in children is discussed. Evastin has been shown to eliminate histamine papules in 93% of cases and those caused by D. pteronyssinus in 68% of cases. After 10 days of treatment, conjunctival response decreased or disappeared in 80% of cases and nasal response decreased in 69%. Clinically, evastin was effective in 14 of 22 children and produced moderate effects in 2 and no effect in 6. There were no dropouts because of problems of tolerance. The effect of nasal patency and anatomy during asymmetrical nasal high flow.

Nasal high flow (NHF) with the asymmetrical cannula interface (AI) is increasingly used as respiratory support across a broad range of patients. By incorporating one unilaterally oversized prong, the AI enhances dead-space clearance and increases airway pressure. This study investigated the effects of nasal patency and anatomical variability of the upper airways during NHF delivered with the AI. Twenty healthy adults underwent three 3-h study periods, whereby heated, humidified air was delivered at 30 L/min via either an AI, a symmetrical interface (SI), or a control condition without NHF. NARES: a risk factor for obstructive sleep apnea?

BACKGROUND: Nonallergic rhinitis with eosinophilia syndrome (NARES) constitutes a rare nasal condition characterized by a chronic, eosinophilic inflammation. Patients' major complaints constitute nasal congestion and rhinorrhea. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a potentially life-threatening condition characterized by recurrent episodes of obstruction of the upper airways resulting in oxygen desaturation. Nasal congestion constitutes one predisposing factor for OSAS. OBJECTIVE: The purpose was to study whether NARES constitutes a risk factor for OSAS. METHODS: The study included 26
