AIM: This 12-week prospective, randomized, double-blind, two-center trial evaluated the impact of a microcrystalline zinc hydroxyapatite (mHA) dentifrice on plaque formation rate (PFR) in chronic periodontitis patients. We hypothesized that mHA precipitates cause delayed plaque development when compared to a fluoridated control (AmF/SnF2), and therefore would improve periodontal health.
MATERIAL & METHODS: At baseline and after 4 and 12 weeks, PFR and other clinical and microbiological parameters were recorded. Seventy periodontitis patients received a mHA or AmF/SnF2 dentifrice as daily oral

OBJECTIVES: The authors describe associations between dental fluorosis and fluoride intakes, with an emphasis on intake from fluoride in infant formula.
METHODS: The authors administered periodic questionnaires to parents to assess children's early fluoride intake sources from beverages, selected foods, dentifrice and supplements. They later assessed relationships between fluorosis of the permanent maxillary incisors and fluoride intake from beverages and other sources, both for individual time points and cumulatively using area-under-the-curve (AUC) estimates. The authors determined effects

Triclosan is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent widely used in oral care products. In recent studies, a triclosan/pyrophosphate dentifrice has shown efficacy against dental plaque but not gingivitis. Further, experimental gingivitis studies on triclosan itself and in combination with other dentifrice ingredients demonstrate only moderate antimicrobial activity. In contrast, there are a number of other studies in the literature reporting the antigingivitis efficacy of triclosan/copolymer and triclosan/zinc citrate dentifrices. These dentifrices possess similar effects on dental plaque to tric

AIM: As suppression of Streptococcus mutans in young children may prevent or delay colonisation of the oral cavity, toothbrushing with dentifrices containing anti-S. mutans activity may aid in preventing caries. The aims of this study were to compare the effects of children's dentifrices on the growth of S. mutans and non-mutans bacteria (Streptococcus sanguinis and Lactobacillus acidophilus).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The agar diffusion assay at neutral pH was used to examine the antibacterial activity of commercial dentifrices and their major constituents.
RESULTS: Dentifrices containing 1,45

Bacterial proliferation and plaque accumulation on the surface of the tongue are major factors contributing to oral malodor. In this research, we used subjective and objective methods to evaluate the breath benefit of a triclosan-containing dentifrice (Blend-a-Med Complete Night) with and without tongue brushing in a randomized, examiner-blinded, three-period crossover clinical trial. Twenty-nine adults (mean age 40.2 years) with morning malodor were randomly assigned to a treatment sequence: triclosan dentifrice, triclosan dentifrice plus tongue brushing, and a control dentifrice (Crest Cavit
