Effects of device-based and manual sensory acuity training on nonspecific chronic low back pain: a three-arm randomized controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: Nonspecific chronic low back pain (NCLBP) is a prevalent and disabling condition often associated with impaired sensory discrimination and altered cortical representation. Sensory acuity training (SAT) has emerged as a promising strategy to target these neurophysiological mechanisms; however, the comparative effectiveness of technology-based versus manual sensory acuity interventions remains unclear. This protocol comprises a three-arm, randomized controlled trial designed to evaluate the effects of technology-based and manual SAT, in addition to conventional physiotherapy, compare

Assessment of Adverse Events Using the Therapy-Disability-Neurology (TDN) Grading System in a Cohort of Aneurysmal Subarachnoid Hemorrhage Patients: A Single-Center Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Adverse events (AE) associated with neurosurgical interventions can cause neurological deficits and impaired functional outcomes. The Therapy-Disability-Neurology (TDN) grade classifies AE severity based on treatment requirements, disability, and neurological deficits, but has not been validated in aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). We aimed to validate the TDN grade in predicting functional outcomes and length of hospital stay (LOS) in aSAH patients, treated surgically and/or endovascularly. METHODS: We conducted a single-center retrospective cohort study of a

A comparison of blocked and mixed-trial methods for teaching auditory-visual discriminations.

Behavior analysts typically teach conditional discriminations in a mixed-trial format but may switch to a blocked-trial format for learners displaying limited acquisition. No known research has shown that mixed-trial methods are more effective or efficient than blocked-trial methods for teaching discriminations, so it is not clear why this format has been adopted as the "first-line" intervention. We compared blocked and mixed-trial formats for teaching novel auditory-visual discriminations to three adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). Results show blocked-trial method

Asperger syndrome: how does it relate to non-verbal learning disability?

The syndrome of non-verbal learning disabilities (NLD) is associated with prominent non-verbal deficits such as reduced perceptual and spatial abilities, against a background of relatively intact verbal abilities. Asperger syndrome is one of the several developmental disorders for which Byron Rourke has claimed that almost all the signs and symptoms of NLD are present. This study investigated the claim utilizing a battery of neuropsychological tests that were found to be sensitive to NLD in the original learning disordered populations used to describe the syndrome. Children aged between 8 and

The merger and development of equivalence classes by unreinforced conditional selection of comparison stimuli.

Three experiments assessed the likelihood that subjects with histories of equivalence class development would respond conditionally on new discriminations in the absence of differential consequences for responses. In the first two experiments, two groups of subjects with different experimental histories, but whose performances showed four equivalence classes, responded on trials without explicit reinforcement involving samples from two of the classes and comparisons from the other two classes, in a two-choice matching-to-sample format. Subjects consistently selected a particular comparison in

An examination of factors influencing responses to requests for disability accommodations.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to examine the influences of responses to reasonable accommodation requests for an individual with a disability. RESEARCH METHOD/DESIGN: Two-hundred-forty individuals participated in a vignette-based experiment in which aspects of the requestor's disability and the accommodation request were manipulated. RESULTS: The results showed that intentions to grant an accommodation were predicted by a number of factors, including emotional responses toward the requestor, characteristics of the impairment causing the disability, characteristics of the a

Long-term stability of equivalence relations in the absence of training or practice.

An adult male with mild mental retardation, whose laboratory history included training in a match-to-sample task on 16 arbitrary relations among 16 visual stimuli and 2 auditory stimuli, had performances that showed the development of 112 additional arbitrary relations that had never been reinforced. In the presented study on 2-year and 3-year follow-up tests for these derived relations, his performances remained stable despite the absence of opportunities to practice these relations between the tests and the absence of explicit feedback during the tests. The similarity to the long-term stabil

Perception of figure orientation by nonambulatory children with profound mental retardation.

An habituation-dishabituation procedure was used to study perception of changes in figure orientation by nonambulatory children with profound mental retardation. On each of 3 days, 16 participants were given familiarization trials with either a vertical or an horizontal pattern, followed by test trials with the familiarized stimulus and one of three novel stimuli--a 90 degree or 45 degree rotation of the pattern, or a rearrangement of the pattern elements into a square. Visual fixation times decreased over familiarization trials. Fixation times on test trials were longer for novel than for fam

Crowd Evaluations of Entrepreneurs with Physical Disabilities: Stereotype Subtyping through the Lens of Benevolent Ableism.

We investigate how crowds evaluate pitches by entrepreneurs with versus without physical disabilities. Leveraging stereotype subtyping, we argue that entrepreneurs with physical disabilities are evaluated as a distinct subtype, rather than as people with disabilities or as conventional entrepreneurs. We hypothesize that benevolent ableism shapes how this subtype is evaluated, inflating both warmth and competence perceptions. Three experiments support our hypotheses, and key informant conversations with professional investors and entrepreneurs with disabilities corroborate the proposed mechanis

Turkish adaptation and psychometric evaluation of the activity scale for kids in children with physical disabilities.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to translate and culturally adapt the Activities Scale for Kids (ASK) into Turkish and to assess its reliability and validity in children with physical disabilities. METHOD: The original ASK was translated into Turkish following the World Health Organization's translation and cultural adaptation guidelines. Psychometric evaluation included internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha), test-retest reliability (intraclass correlation coefficient), and construct validity using Rasch analysis. Convergent and discriminant validity were examined using the Pediatric Outcomes Dat

[Concordance between a head circumference growth function and intellectual disability in relation with the cause of microcephaly].

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to investigate the correlations between patterns of head growth and intellectual disability among distinct aetiological presentations of microcephaly. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 3,269 head circumference (HC) charts of patients from a tertiary neuropediatric unit were reviewed and 136 microcephalic participants selected. Using the Z-scores of registered HC measurements we defined the variables: HC Minimum, HC Drop and HC Catch-up. We classified patients according to the presence or absence of intellectual disability (IQ below 71) and according to the cause of microcephaly

Upper extremity disability is associated with pain intensity and grip strength in women with bilateral idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.

BACKGROUND: The upper extremity disability in patients with carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is related to dysfunction due to the median nerve damage. However, there is no report on which dysfunctions affect the upper extremity disability. PURPOSE: This study aimed to investigate which clinical factors influence upper extremity disability in women with CTS. METHODS: We analyzed 60 hands of women with bilateral idiopathic CTS. Upper extremity disability was assessed using Hand10, a validated and self-administered tool. Pain intensity was measured using the Japanese version of the Short-Form McGil

Equivalence classes in individuals with minimal verbal repertoires.

Studies from two different laboratories tested for equivalence classes in individuals with severe mental retardation and minimal verbal repertoires. In the first study, 3 individuals learned several matching-to-sample performances: matching picture comparison stimuli to dictated-word sample stimuli (AB), matching those same pictures to printed letter samples (CB), and also matching the pictures to nonrepresentative forms (DB). On subsequent tests, all individuals immediately displayed Emergent Relations AC, AD, BC, BD, CD, and DC, together constituting a positive demonstration of equivalence (

Response-reinforcer relationships and improved learning in autistic children.

In order to affect more rapid response acquisition for autistic children, researchers have recently begun to investigate the functional relationships of reinforcers to other components of the operant conditioning paradigm. Previous research suggested that functional relationships between target behaviors and reinforcers might be especially effective. For example, locating a reward inside a container might be a more efficient way to teach a child to open the container than by handling the child a reward for opening an empty container. The present experiment assessed, within a multiple baseline

Learning and memory in the FMR1 knockout mouse.

The fragile X [fra(X)] syndrome is manifested phenotypically as a developmental disability comprised mainly of moderate-to-severe mental retardation (MR). Deficits are especially evident in auditory and visual short-term memory. Recently, an FMR1 knockout mouse developed by the Dutch-Belgian Fragile X Consortium demonstrated significantly lower visual-spatial abilities than littermate controls. We wondered if these results were associated with learning per se or to performance deficits only. Thus, we examined learning and memory in male FMR1 knockout mice crossbred from Fvb and E129 strains, a

Teaching picture-to-object relations in picture-based requesting by children with autism: a comparison between error prevention and error correction teaching procedures.

BACKGROUND: Children who have a combination of language and developmental disabilities with autism often experience major difficulties in learning relations between objects and their graphic representations. Therefore, they would benefit from teaching procedures that minimize their difficulties in acquiring these relations. This study compared two teaching procedures, an error prevention procedure and an error correction procedure, for teaching relations between objects and pictures. METHOD: Participants were two groups of children with autism, aged between 3 and 7 years. In the context of pi

Behavioral momentum in computer-presented discriminations in individuals with severe mental retardation.

Behavioral momentum was examined in 2 individuals with severe mental retardation via within-subject manipulations of obtained reinforcer rates. Subjects performed self-paced discrimination problems presented on a touch screen computer monitor. Two different problems, Tasks A and B, alternated in blocks of 15 trials on a multiple schedule. Reinforcers were snack foods. The reinforcement schedule for Task A was continuous (fixed-ratio 1) and the schedule for Task B was continuous in some conditions and variable ratio in other conditions. Behavioral momentum was assessed in test sessions by prefe
