[Adjuvant anti-VEGF therapy in Coats' disease].

BACKGROUND: Coats' disease is a non-hereditary acquired, usually unilateral eye disorder that predominantly occurs in young males (1/100,000) with the onset of symptoms generally appearing in the first two decades of life. Coats' disease is characterized by telangiectatic changes, blood leaks from the defective vessels with retinal exudation followed in advanced stages by retinal detachment. CASE REPORT: A 14-year-old male patient presented in our department with gradual visual loss in the right eye. Based on the clinical and diagnostic findings Coats' disease was diagnosed. The exudative ret

Multimodal imaging of the macula in hereditary and acquired lack of macular pigment.

PURPOSE: Macular pigment (MP) deficit has been described in macular teleangiectasia type 2 (MTA; acquired MP loss) and in Sjögren-Larsson syndrome (SLS; hereditary MP deficiency). Central blue light-induced fundus autofluorescence (FAF) and blue light fundus reflectance (BLR) are thought to reflect MP distribution. This study was performed to describe the macular morphology in SLS and MTA by multimodal imaging to further investigate the causes of FAF and BLR changes in these disorders. METHODS: This was a single-centre, cross-sectional, retrospective, observational study on SLS and MTA patien

Craniofacial linear scleroderma associated with retinal telangiectasia and exudative retinal detachment.

Linear scleroderma is a characteristic form of scleroderma that typically affects children. Ocular manifestations may be present, especially when the frontoparietal area of the head is affected. We present the case of a 5-year-old boy with craniofacial linear scleroderma ("en coup de sabre") who developed exudative retinal detachment. Angiographic and neuroimaging findings are presented, and the importance of regular fundus examination is highlighted.

[Inefficacy of aflibercept in the treatment of idiopathic macular telangiectasia type 2 without neovascularization].

Idiopathic macular telangectasia type 2 is a rare disease consisting primarily of bilateral macular capillary telangiectasia, alterations of the ellipsoid zone and intraretinal cysts that may appear as cystoid macular edema in the absence of neovascularization. Our goal was to study the efficacy of aflibercept in the treatment of these cysts. Thus, we performed a series of three intravitreal injections of aflibercept in the right eye of a woman with a typical presentation of macular telangectasia type 2 complicated by cystoid macular edema without neovascularization. These injections did not s

Characteristics and quantification of vascular changes in macular telangiectasia type 2 on optical coherence tomography angiography.

BACKGROUND: Macular telangiectasia type 2 (MacTel 2) is a bilateral idiopathic, rare neurodegenerative disease with alterations in the macular capillary network leading to vision loss and is the most common of three subtypes. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is a non-invasive imaging modality which helps understand the complex pathological changes, and images the blood vessels across different layers based on their flow characteristics. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 56 eyes of Asian Indian eyes of 28 consecutive patients with MacTel 2 studied during a 3-mont

[Immunopathogenetic, clinical features and treatment of external exudative Coats' retinitis].

The findings of comprehensive clinical and immunopathogenetic examinations of 42 patients with external exudative Coats' retinitis showed the significance of infection in the etiopathogenesis of disease and helped identify the etiology, mainly infectious, in 47.6% patients, which correlated with case histories indicating foci of chronic infection and type I immunological insufficiency. Toxoplasma infection was the predominant etiological factor (38 cases). The predominant clinical symptoms were solid exudation, vascular changes, hemorrhages, vitreous involvement, and exudative detachment of th

Ocular findings and treatment of a young boy with Coats’ plus.

The authors describe a 34-month-old boy who presented with a bilateral and asymmetric exudative retinopathy with similarities to Coats’ disease. The patient’s medical history was remarkable for hypotonia, developmental delay, seizures, and intracranial calcifications. Genetic testing revealed a diagnosis of Coats’ plus. This rare genetic disease should be in the differential diagnosis in patients who present with a bilateral and asymmetric Coats’-like retinopathy in the presence of other systemic abnormalities.

Sequential multimodal therapy for senile-onset Coats disease.

We report a rare case of senile-onset Coats disease presenting with severe macular exudation and subretinal fluid in a 70-year-old male who experienced progressive vision loss. Multimodal imaging excluded other exudative maculopathies and confirmed the diagnosis, guiding a personalized sequential therapeutic strategy. Initial intravitreal dexamethasone induction facilitated rapid reduction of subretinal fluid and inflammation, permitting targeted high-frequency fractionated laser photocoagulation of telangiectatic retinal vessels. Follow-up intravitreal aflibercept injections were administered
