In an attempt to diagnose a suspected amelanotic melanoma tumour, we examined a variety of tissue and cell samples from one patient at the ultrastructural level, which consisted of single cell suspensions of tumour cells with and without DOPA treatment, tumour cells after culture in agar with and without DOPA treatment, and single tumour cells hetero-transplanted into a nude mouse. T lymphocytic colony formation by peripheral lymphocytes separated by discontinuous albumin gradient centrifugation was evaluated in 8 patients with Philadelphia (Ph1)-positive chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). We studied immunogenic properties of biofilm and agar cultures of Francisella tularensis strains. Analysis of the interaction of F. tularensis biofilm cultures with macrophages from experimental animals showed that the bacteria adapt to adverse conditions by forming biofilms, thereby increasing their virulence and subsequently suppressing the functional activity of immune cells. Prevalence of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in three areas of Brazil was surveyed by a recently developed faecal culture method (an agar plate culture). The Strongyloides infection was confirmed in 11.3% of 432 subjects examined. The effect of orally administered agar on the serum concentration of bilirubin was tested in 366 premature and newborn infants. For this purpose two different concentrations of agar were added to the milk for 8-10 days. On none of the groups tested did the serum level of bilirubin show a significant decrease after administration of agar. Therefore the attempt to lower the level of serum bilirubin in premature and newborn infants by inhibiting enteric reabsorption by means of adsorbents must be considered a failure.
