Beyond base pairs: Using simulation to build genomic competency in pediatric nurse practitioners.

Genomics is a lifespan competency that has relevance for pediatric nursing practice. Identifying individuals who could benefit from genomic healthcare can enable timely diagnosis and treatment to improve health and wellbeing outcomes. Nurse practitioners (NPs) must have genomic competency to provide high quality, comprehensive pediatric care and support families through the continuum of care. To date, integrating genomics into nursing curricula has been inconsistent and piecemeal. We describe the structure, process, and initial outcomes of a novel genomic nursing simulation for pediatric NP st

Issues in the nursing management of patients with water intoxication.

The syndrome of water intoxication, experienced by a small percentage of hospitalized chronically mentally ill patients, is a two-stage process, usually beginning with polydipsia. In some patients the physiological ability to excrete excess free water is lost, and polydipsia progresses to hypervolemia and hyponatremia. The hyponatremia responds to fluid restriction. Nevertheless, nursing intervention associated with limiting a patient's fluids is complex, including psychodynamic, social, and behavioral factors. Because of the complexity of nursing care, and because of the unanswered questions

Nursing management of gestational diabetes mellitus in Ghana: Perspectives of nurse-midwives and women.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is defined as any degree of glucose intolerance that is observed in the beginning of, or first acknowledged during pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM is estimated to be approximately 15% globally and is expected to increase due to growing numbers of overweight and obesity in women in their reproductive age. The nursing management of GDM in terms of lifestyle modifications (exercise, diet and nutrition) and the taking of diabetes medication, if required, and adherence thereto is crucial to prevent maternal and neonatal-perinatal complications. This

Nursing care of an elderly patient with toxic epidermal necrolysis: a case report.

Toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) is a rare, life-threatening mucocutaneous disorder, and its occurrence in elderly patients with compromised immunity and multiple comorbidities poses significant challenges to nursing care and prognosis. This paper summarizes the ICU nursing experience of an 84-year-old female patient with TEN presumably induced by parecoxib injection. The patient presented with 55% body surface area (BSA) skin involvement, combined with bedridden status due to fracture and electrolyte disturbances, with an expected mortality rate of 30-50%. An individualized nursing plan was f

[Nursing homes: a source of increasing concern. Behavior assessment by the nursing staff].

In recent times the need for physical care of residents of Dutch old people's homes has clearly increased. This is strongly related to the ageing of the population of these homes as well as to the introduction of legal measures concerning the admission of new residents. Staff members have also noted an increase in the mental and social problems of residents. In this article we describe a rating scale devised for the assessment of psychosocial problems in a home for the aged. The staff completed this scale and an ADL scale four times at three-month intervals. The prevailing problems appear to b

A Consensus Study on the Competencies of Nurse Specialists Providing Care for Craniofacial and Cleft Lip and Palate Patients.

Currently, it is unclear which tasks and competencies nurse specialists provide within the European Reference Network for Craniofacial Anomalies and Ear, Nose, Throat Disorders (ERN CRANIO). This study aims to establish an expert consensus on the needed competencies for this nursing role. A narrative literature search on the role of nurses within cleft and craniofacial care was conducted. Statements on competencies and tasks were formed based on literature and expert opinion and categorized according to the Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists roles. A Delphi consensus process

Hostility Patterns: Implications for Nursing Practice.

In order to present the state of the science of hostility among and across disciplines, a review of the literature was completed. The knowledge gained may influence nursing practice. Scholarly works from nursing, medical and basic sciences, psychology, sociology, education, philosophy, business, communication, and criminology were reviewed. Similar patterns in the use of the concept were discovered.
