Papular Clear Cell Hyperplasia of the Eccrine Duct: A Precursor Lesion of Clear Cell Syringoma?

We report the case of a 77-year-old diabetic patient with asymptomatic papular eruption developed over a cutaneous scar after the resection of a squamous cell carcinoma. Histological examination revealed a clear cell proliferation involving the secretory portion of the eccrine glands. This entity has been previously named as papular clear cell hyperplasia of the eccrine duct. This clear cell change might be caused by glycogen deposition because of diabetes. We postulate that papular clear cell hyperplasia could be a precursor lesion of clear cell syringoma.

Chondroid syringoma. Cytokeratin 20 immunolocalization of Merkel cells and reappraisal of apocrine folliculo-sebaceous differentiation.

CONTEXT: Chondroid syringoma (CS) is a benign cutaneous adnexal tumor with epithelial and stromal components. Epithelial components derived from folliculo-sebaceous-apocrine germ are evident in apocrine but not in eccrine CS. OBJECTIVES: To further characterize pilosebaceous differentiation and to identify the presence of Merkel cells in the areas of follicular differentiation. DESIGN: Histologic type, folliculo-sebaceous differentiation, character of stroma, and presence or absence of Merkel cells by cytokeratin (CK) 20 immunoreactivity were evaluated in 25 CSs (22 apocrine and 3 eccrine) f

Chondroid syringoma of the axilla: A potential for misdiagnosis as metastatic carcinoma on fine needle aspiration cytology.

Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign adnexal tumor and tends to occur in the head and neck region. Involvement in the axilla is very unusual, and the differential diagnosis of such presentations includes lymphadenopathy and cyst. Fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) is a very useful tool for the diagnosis of chondroid syringoma. The characteristic feature of chondroid syringoma in cytology is the presence of distinct biphasic cell populations of epithelial and myoepithelial cells in the chondromyxoid stroma. If the typical biphasic cellular and chondromyxoid stromal elements are not visible

Chondroid syringoma of the upper lip: a rare case highlighting diagnostic challenges and literature review.

Chondroid syringoma is a rare benign cutaneous adnexal tumor, most commonly found in the head and neck region. Its occurrence on the upper lip is exceptional. We report a case involving a 63-year-old man presenting with a painless, firm swelling of the left upper lip that gradually enlarged over three years. Clinical examination revealed a 1.6 cm submucosal nodule. Surgical excision with a 3 mm margin and direct closure using 5-0 Vicryl Rapide sutures was performed. Histopathological and immunohistochemical analysis confirmed the diagnosis of chondroid syringoma. No recurrence or functional/ae

In vivo reflectance confocal microscopy for evaluating seborrheic keratosis, verruca plana, syringoma and lichen nitidus.

BACKGROUND: In clinical, common facial papule dermatosis such as seborrheic keratosis (SK), verruca plana (VP), syringoma and lichen nitidus (LN) is often misdiagnosed. Summarizing in vivo reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) features of the facial papule dermatosis is helpful in the diagnosis of ambiguous lesions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the features of SK, VP, syringoma, and LN in RCM. METHODS: We recruited 144 patients referred for unequivocal facial papule dermatosis including 60 patients with SK, 60 patients with VP, 10 patients with syringoma, and 14 patients with LN.

Cytologic features of chondroid syringoma in fine needle aspiration biopsies: a report of 3 cases.

BACKGROUND: Fine needle aspiration (FNA) cytology is a well-established diagnostic tool. However, most clinicians prefer to diagnose suspected skin tumors by excisional biopsy as they are easily accessible, with the result that benign skin adnexal tumors are rarely encountered on FNA, often leading to misdiagnosis and mismanagement of patients. We describe the cytologic features of chondroid syringoma in 3 cases in order to facilitate cytologic diagnosis of this lesion. CASES: Three patients each presented with a mass lesion in the head and neck region and on FNA were diagnosed as having chon

An atypical chondroid syringoma with malignant degeneration: Utility of comparative genomic hybridization in confirming the diagnosis.

Chondroid syringoma (CS) represents the cutaneous counterpart of mixed tumor (pleomorphic adenoma) of salivary glands. Definitive diagnosis is made on histopathology and is based on the presence of characteristic epithelial and stromal components. We report a case of an atypical CS arising on the extremity of an elderly male patient. Histomorphologic features of necrosis and cellular atypia raised suspicion for malignant degeneration, an exceptionally rare circumstance in this context. To further support the diagnosis of malignancy, array comparative genomic hybridization was performed from bo

Benign chondroid syringoma affecting the upper lip: Report of a rare case and review of literature.

Chondroid syringoma (CS) (mixed tumor of the skin) is a rare neoplasm of the sweat glands, which presents itself as a slow-growing, painless, nonulcerated, subcutaneous or intracutaneous mass often occurring in the head and neck region. The clinician may miss the diagnosis of this lesion due to its rarity. CS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of any subcutaneous nodules, especially in the head and neck region. The diagnosis of CS is mainly based on the histopathologic examination. This article presents a 35-year-old male with a mass on the upper lip that was histopathologicall

Eruptive Penile Syringomas in an Adolescent: Novel Approach with Serial Microexcisions and Suture-Adhesive Repair.

Penile syringomas are benign adnexal tumors that are usually asymptomatic but can be cosmetically distressing. Because of the delicate nature of skin in this region, treatment is difficult, and there are few case reports of procedural destruction of these tumors. We report a case of successful surgical excision using Castroviejo ophthalmic scissors followed by primary closure with fast-absorbing plain gut suture and a cyanoacrylate adhesive application. This procedure was well tolerated and had an impressive cosmetic outcome.

Malignant chondroid syringoma: report of a case with lymph node metastasis 12 years after local excision.

A 46-year-old man noticed a nodule on his sole. The nodule was removed and the specimen showed a lobular proliferation of tumor cells with glandular differentiation embedded in mucinous stroma. A diagnosis of chondroid syringoma was made. Twelve years later, he noted a swelling in the right inguinal region. The mass was surgically removed. The histopathological findings of the lymph node showed the more atypical tumor cells in the mucoid stroma. Upon reexamination, the primary tumor contained malignant chondroid syringoma (MCS) cells; the tumor cells metastasized to lymph node. MCS is rare wit

Treatment of periorbital syringoma by the pinhole method using a carbon dioxide laser in 29 Asian patients.

BACKGROUND: Pinhole method has been used to treat various types of scars and dermal tumors by making multiple small holes in target tissues of the deep dermis using an ablative 10,600-nm carbon dioxide (CO2) laser. OBJECTIVES: We prospectively investigated the efficacy and safety of using a CO2 laser to treat periorbital syringomas via the pinhole method. METHODS: A total of 29 patients with periorbital syringomas were treated with two sessions of CO2 laser treatment using the pinhole method at two-month intervals. Laser fluences were delivered under the following settings: pulse duration of

"Osteoid" Syringoma: A Report of Two Cases of Cutaneous Mixed Tumor With Extensive Ossification and Review of the Literature.

Interestingly, ossification is a rare histopathologic feature in chondroid syringoma, a benign cutaneous adnexal tumor consisting of mixed ductal and chondromyxoid differentiation. We report two cases of chondroid syringoma with pronounced ossification. A 46-year-old Hispanic woman presented with a slowly enlarging, asymptomatic, erythematous nodule on the left upper cutaneous lip abutting the nasal sill. Excisional biopsy revealed a well circumscribed, subcutaneous, biphasic proliferation of ductal epithelial strands and chondromyxoid stroma with prominent trabecular ossification enclosing fa

Chondroid syringomas of the head and neck: a three-case series highlighting clinical variation and diagnostic considerations.

Chondroid syringoma (CS), also known as cutaneous mixed tumor, is a benign adnexal tumor arising from sweat gland origin, most commonly affecting the head and neck. Due to its nonspecific clinical appearance, it is frequently mistaken for more common cutaneous lesions, making histopathologic evaluation key for diagnosis. We present three cases of CS occurring on the glabella, lower eyelid, and cheek, each demonstrating distinct clinical morphology and posing diagnostic challenges. All lesions were excised and confirmed histologically, showing characteristic chondromyxoid stroma and epithelial

Multiple Scrotal Cysts Composed of Combined Syringomas and Epidermal Inclusion Cysts: A Previously Unreported Association.

Epidermal inclusion cyst (EIC) and syringoma are both benign lesions that are primarily asymptomatic and occur at various places on the body. Although both EIC and syringoma are common, their joint appearance has not been previously reported. These benign proliferations target different populations, and with differing clinical presentations. Syringomas tend to develop in young females as smaller multiple lesions, while EICs often present in older males as single or multiple variants that are typically larger in size. They also possess distinctive histopathological appearances that can used for

Erbium YAG laser treatment of periorbital syringomas by using the multiple ovoid-shape ablation method.

INTRODUCTION: Syringomas are benign tumours that develop predominantly in the periorbital areas of women. As periorbital syringoma is adjacent to the appendages, Erbium YAG (Er:YAG) laser treatment should be an ideal tool for its precise ablation, although its use has not previously been reported. We retrospectively analysed our new ovoid-shape Er:YAG laser ablation method for the treatment of syringoma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an extirpation method in which multiple, 2- to 4-mm, egg-shaped ablation fields were created. This method was used to treat 49 patients, 35 of whom had pre

Ultrastructure of chondroid syringoma: role of the myoepithelial cell in the development of the mixed tumor of the skin and soft tissues.

The ultrastructure of a chondroid syringoma is described. The tumor nests are formed by clumps, solid cords and tubular structures distributed diffusely throughout a stroma of varying density. Two different types of cells form this tumor: dark cells forming the inner layer of the tubuloalveolar and ductal structures and having epithelial features, and light cells which form the outer layer of the tubular structures and show myoepithelial differentiation. The myoepithelial cells seem to be responsible for the production of the chondroid areas and thus the mixed appearance of the tumor. The epit
