Endophthalmitis associated with Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteremia and meningitis.

The unusual occurrence of endophthalmitis associated with Haemophilus influenzae type b bacteremia and meningitis was confirmed in three young children during a five-year period. In contrast to bacterial endophthalmitis attributed to other microorganisms, these three infections resolved completely within a few days with conventional antimicrobial therapy. Endophthalmitis is but one of the apparently increasing number of unsuual complications that may be observed as a result of H influenzae type b bacteremia.

Congenital endophthalmitis following maternal shellfish ingestion.

PURPOSE: To highlight an unusual organism causing a unilateral endophthalmitis by transplacental spread. METHOD: We report a case of Plesiomonas shigelloides endophthalmitis, presenting in a newborn, with co-existing septicaemia and meningitis. There was a significant maternal history of diarrhoea associated with the ingestion of oysters 2 weeks prior to delivery. RESULT: The endophthalmitis was treated with parenteral antibiotics and topical mydriatics with complete resolution, although subsequent assessment of the affected eye suggests a poor visual outcome. CONCLUSION: Endophthalmitis in

Paediatric refraction practices: access to cyclopegia, barriers, and disparities among eye care professionals in Kuala Lumpur.

BACKGROUND: Accurate paediatric refraction is essential for detecting and managing vision issues, including latent hyperopia, amblyopia, accommodative esotropia, and progressive myopia. Cycloplegic agents are critical for obtaining precise measurements in children, yet their use varies due to professional, regulatory, and systemic barriers. In Malaysia, where refractive services are divided between the public and private sectors, limited data exist on how eye care professionals implement cycloplegic refraction in paediatric practice. METHODS: This cross-sectional study employed a self-adminis

Prevalence of Accommodative Insufficiency in Children With Normal Accommodative-Convergence/Accommodation Ratio and Its Association With Refractive Error: A Cross-Sectional Study.

OBJECTIVE: With the increasing use of digital devices among the pediatric population, asthenopia has become increasingly common. While refractive errors are the most prevalent cause, they can sometimes be linked to undiagnosed or underdiagnosed binocular vision disorders, such as accommodative insufficiency (AI). In many cases, simple refractive correction alone does not alleviate asthenopia. This study aims to determine the prevalence of AI in children with a normal accommodative-convergence/accommodation (AC/A) ratio and to investigate the correlation between accommodative amplitude and refr

Treatment of Non-Infectious Corneal Injury: Review of Diagnostic Agents, Therapeutic Medications, and Future Targets.

Corneal injuries can occur secondary to traumatic, chemical, inflammatory, metabolic, autoimmune, and iatrogenic causes. Ocular infection may frequently occur concurrent to corneal injury; however, antimicrobial agents are excluded from this present review. While practitioners may primarily rely on clinical examination techniques to assess these injuries, several pharmacological agents, such as fluorescein, lissamine green, and rose bengal, can be used to formulate a diagnosis and develop effective treatment strategies. Practitioners may choose from several analgesic medications to help with p
