BACKGROUND: Cognitive impairment and exercise intolerance are common in chronic kidney disease (CKD). Cerebral perfusion and oxygenation play a major role in both cognitive function and exercise execution. This study aimed to examine cerebral oxygenation during a mild physical stress in patients at different CKD stages and controls without CKD.
METHODS: Ninety participants (18 per CKD stage 2, 3a, 3b and 4 and 18 controls) underwent a 3-min intermittent handgrip exercise at 35% of their maximal voluntary contraction. During exercise, cerebral oxygenation [oxyhaemoglobin (O2Hb), deoxyhaemoglob

Hypoxia in the neonatal period is associated with early manifestations of adverse cardiovascular health in adulthood including higher risk of hypertension and atherosclerosis. We hypothesize that this occurs due to activation of lysyl oxidases (LOXs) and the remodeling of the large conduit vessels, leading to early arterial stiffening. Newborn C57Bl/6 mice were exposed to hypoxia (FiO2 = 11.5%) from postnatal day 1 (P1) to postnatal day 11 (P11), followed by resumption of normoxia. Controls were maintained in normoxia. Using in vivo (pulse wave velocity; PWV) and ex vivo (tensile testing) art

INTRODUCTION: Antares is a pulse wave analysis (PWA) algorithm designed to allow a non-invasive estimation of central (aortic) blood pressure (cBP) using automated oscillometric blood pressure (BP) devices. Diabetes may affect elastic and muscular arteries differently, resulting in disparate pulse wave characteristics in central and peripheral arteries, which may limit the accuracy of PWA devices. The aim of our study was to evaluate the accuracy of Antares for estimating cBP as compared with invasively measured cBP in patients with type 2 diabetes.

BACKGROUND: Differentiating depression in major depressive disorder and bipolar disorder is challenging in clinical practice. Therefore, reliable biomarkers are urgently needed to differentiate between these diseases. This study's main objective was to assess whether cardiac autonomic function can distinguish patients with unipolar depression (UD), bipolar depression (BD), and bipolar mania (BM).
METHODS: We recruited 791 patients with mood disorders, including 191 with UD, 286 with BD, and 314 with BM, who had been drug free for at least 2 weeks. Cardiovascular status was measured using hear

Objective: Acute and regular moderate-intensity endurance exercise (MIEE) is known to positively affect vascular function. The present study assessed if an exercise session in an innovative exergame called the ExerCube can induce similar vascular reactions as an MIEE session. Materials and Methods: Twenty-eight healthy recreationally active participants (13 females and 15 males; aged 24.8 ± 3.9 years; with body mass index 23.2 ± 2.3 kg/m2) completed an exergaming session (EGS) in the ExerCube (25 minutes) and an MIEE session on a treadmill (35 minutes, 65%-70% of maximal heart rate [HR]) in a

BACKGROUND: Data-based approaches promise to use the information in cardiovascular signals to diagnose cardiovascular diseases. Considerable effort has been undertaken in the field of pulse-wave analysis to harness this information. However, the inverse problem, inferring arterial properties from waveform measurements, is not well understood today. Consequently, uncertainties within the estimation hinder the diagnostic application of such methods.
METHOD: This work contributes a publicly available data set measured at an in-vitro cardiovascular simulator, focusing on a set of input conditions

PURPOSE: Insomnia is a common sleep disorder which has high comorbidity with a number of cardiovascular diseases (CVD). As a possible risk factor for the CVDs, arterial stiffness may be assessed non-invasively by pulse wave velocity (PWV) and augmentation index (AI). The aim of this study was to evaluate any relation between insomnia and arterial stiffness.
METHODS: Patients with insomnia were included in the study after the exclusion of other sleep disorders by polysomnography. Sleep quality and the degree of insomnia symptoms were evaluated by the Pittsburgh sleep quality index (PSQI) and i

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death and is in the majority of cases due to the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in arteries. Initially, thickening of the inner layer of the arterial wall occurs. Continuation of this process leads to plaque formation. The risk of a plaque to rupture and thus to induce an ischemic event is directly related to its composition. Consequently, characterization of the plaque composition and its proneness to rupture are of crucial importance for risk assessment and treatment strategies. The carotid is an excellent artery to be imaged with ultr

To analyze cerebral arteriovenous pulse propagation and to generate phase-resolved pulse amplitude maps from a fast gradient-echo sequence offering flow-related enhancement (FREE). Brain MRI was performed using a balanced steady-state free precession sequence at 3T followed by retrospective k-space gating. The time interval of the pulse wave between anterior-, middle- and posterior cerebral artery territories and the superior sagittal sinus were calculated and compared between and older and younger groups within 24 healthy volunteers. Pulse amplitude maps were generated and compared to pseudo-

The influence of vasoconstrictors of intracranial arteries on the amplitude and configuration of the intracranial pulse wave (ICPW) was investigated. Continuous pressure recordings from the descending aorta (systemic arterial pressure) and the third cerebral ventricle (intracranial pressure) were obtained from anesthetized cats. Computerized analysis of the configuration, amplitude, and frequency spectrum of ventricular wave (ICPW) and aortic pulse wave (SAPW) was performed. Artificial cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), blood, or 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) was injected intracisternally. In 24 control

There are several non-invasive methods to study endothelial function, but their interrelation and association to cardiovascular risk have not been well evaluated. We studied macrovascular and microvascular endothelial function simultaneously in different vascular beds in relation to cardiovascular mortality risk (Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation, SCORE) and hypertension induced cardiac organ damage, and their interrelationship. The study investigated 71 hypertensive patients by forearm post-ischemic flow-mediated vasodilation, pulse wave analysis (applanation tonometry) and beta 2-adrenocep

BACKGROUND: Arterial elasticity, noninvasively assessed by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is an important determinant of cardiovascular health, yet reference values are lacking for Chinese youth. Moreover, the interplay between adiposity, skeletal muscle mass, and blood pressure regarding cfPWV remains unclear.
METHODS: We analyzed 2077 Chinese children and adolescents aged 6 to 14 years from a cross-sectional survey. Among them, 1382 nonobese, normotensive, and metabolically healthy participants were selected as the reference population to derive sex-, age-, and height-specific

Peripheral vascular disease is a frequently occurring disease and is most often caused by atherosclerosis and more rarely by anomalies of the collagen or other components of the arterial wall. Arterial stiffness problems form one of the precursor phenomena of peripheral vascular disease, and in the case of atherosclerosis represents an independent risk marker for the occurrence of cardiovascular disease. The first techniques, developed to evaluate arterial stiffness, use indirect measurements such as pulse wave velocity or the analysis of variations in pressure and volume to estimate arterial

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to determine the origin of the pulmonary venous systolic flow pulse using wave-intensity analysis to separate forward- and backward-going waves.
BACKGROUND: The mechanism of the pulmonary venous systolic flow pulse is unclear and could be a "suction effect" due to a fall in atrial pressure (backward-going wave) or a "pushing effect" due to forward-propagation of right ventricular (RV) pressure (forward-going wave).
METHODS: In eight patients during coronary surgery, pulmonary venous flow (flow probe), velocity (microsensor) and pressure (micromanomet

BACKGROUND Patients undergoing long-term maintenance hemodialysis (HD) experience persistent low-grade inflammation and are at high risk of cardiovascular complications. Aortic stiffness, commonly assessed by carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), is a well-established marker of cardiovascular risk. Glycoprotein acetylation (GlycA) reflects cumulative systemic inflammation; however, its association with aortic stiffness in patients undergoing HD remains unclear. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cross-sectional study, 160 patients receiving maintenance HD were enrolled. Aortic stiffness was d

BACKGROUND: Higher level of carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (CF-PWV) is indicating higher level of arterial stiffness. China has a population of 1.4 billion, with 1.2 billion population in Han ethnicity, 9.4 million population in Miao ethnicity, 700 thousand population in She ethnicity. We chose these three ethnic groups for analysis, to find some similarities or differences in CF-PWV.
METHODS: We launched early vascular lesion detection technology promotion involving several regions such as the Han (Beijing), Miao (Guizhou Province), and She (Fujian Province) ethnicity. We conducted popu
