Long-term outcomes of photorefractive keratectomy in eyes with previous epikeratophakia for keratoconus.

PURPOSE: To determine the long-term safety and effectiveness of photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in the treatment of refractive errors after epikeratophakia (EP) for keratoconus. METHODS: Ten patients (14 eyes) who had refractive errors after EP for keratoconus received PRK surgery. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA), refractive error, corneal astigmatism, pachymetry, corneal topography, and complications were monitored. RESULTS: Mean follow-up after PRK was 63.4 +/- 19.8 months. Mean spherical equivalent was -5.5 +/- 3.9 D before PRK, -0.9 +/-

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) versus photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) for myopia.

BACKGROUND: Myopia (also known as short-sightedness or near-sightedness) is an ocular condition in which the refractive power of the eye is greater than is required, resulting in light from distant objects being focused in front of the retina instead of directly on it. The two most commonly used surgical techniques to permanently correct myopia are photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) and laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK). OBJECTIVES: To compare the effectiveness and safety of LASIK and PRK for correction of myopia by examining post-treatment uncorrected visual acuity, refractive out

Intraoperative flap re-cut after vertical gas breakthrough during femtosecond laser keratectomy.

We describe the management of intraoperative vertical gas breakthrough (VGB) during femtosecond laser flap creation in 3 patients. All eyes were immediately re-cut using 2 different microkeratomes, and the laser in situ keratomileusis treatments were completed on the same day. There were no postoperative complications. Corneal abrasion might predispose to VGB. Management of VGB is effective using microkeratomes. Caution is advised during placement of the suction ring and in eyes with preexisting corneal abrasion or loose epithelium if femtosecond laser keratectomy is used. The approach in term
